That pic is where Huff got away with intentional grounding

Didn't matter though. They went for it on 4th down and didn't make it. But Huff played great. As a grad transfer, there's no substitute for experience as we saw last year with 5th year senior Pickett.

played down to the competition. Furman was the more focused team and left everything on the field. Need to see consistency from start to finish from the Tigers.

Getting beat on a couple screens is one thing. 10 Or 12 to a southern conference team is pathetic. And looked as clueless on the last few as the first few. Apparently we never did anything different. Lots of opportunity.

Agreed. I kept waiting on the adjustment to address the screens.

For whatever reason, our defense has struggled through the years with screens, dump offs and tight end routes. When you have elite athletes up front that want to get to the QB, opposing coaches use that against us. The difference is, for a huge percent of the time, our talent and speed wins out. Should we be happy about Furman running 15 more plays and gaining more yards than we did, no. What we should be happy about is winning and the dancing it brings.

Who ( LBs or DLs) should be recognizing the screen…
Sep 11, 2022, 2:39 PM
|
|
…first?
The DLs are directly engaged with the releasing lineman, but perhaps only PART of the OL is releasing for the screen.
The screen is most effective with blitzing LBs (not corners). Seems that you have to NOT blitz all the LBs, and must keep the fastest LB back for safety.
I’d love to hear some analysis on defensive scheming against screens considering an aggressive and talented DL at your disposal.

D linemen have got to feel it and react. LBs have got to see it yell it and react. Those two things have got to happen no matter who you are playing or what offense they are running.

I thought it would get addressed at half time

Then the first time Furman gets the ball in the 3rd quarter, we have them 3rd and long. They call a screen we should know is coming and it goes for a big gain. Unbelievable

What a line of BS. Self denial. Instead of saying how lousy and uninspired AND poorly prepared we were, he's making EXCUSES ! Tommy Bowden re-incarnated as a defensive coordinator. It's going to be a long year if things don't change in a hurry ! Same goes for the offense.

I dont like his excuse due to what a veteran defense we have.

As Agrresive as our D was under Venebles

they typically did a great job against the screen. Each defender had a job and with discipline would do it. We have too much talent to be overplaying. I am sure this will be a focus this week and get corrected under Wes!

Wes is too smart to let this continue. He's not going to throw anyone under the bus either. Ok by me. He will correct the screen issue. Having Furman run inside almost at will was shocking. I will chalk that up to the D being flat with all the emotion around the illness of Bresee's sister. I know our LB's are very talented. Seems like Bentley is the best at filling the gap and dropping RB's for minimal yardage. Lot's to unpack. Not sure we have our best 2 deep at safety currently on the field. If not, I look for it to be corrected. Probably the first game in recent memory where I could say (truthfully) - hey, DJ looked pretty good - he was the least of our problems.

Saying our defense looks the same as in years past, I disagree. BV would have been going ballistic in that 3rd quarter. Hopefully Wes will get the kinks worked out. Go Tigers!

Two things: 1) the game was never in reach for Furman so the tired Defense just showed up and won on their far better talent. And, 2) the Clemson players have the added pressure of thinking about and choreographing their locker room dance moves for after the win.

…inexperience with the face-of-the-defense position that being the Defensive Coordinator for a high profile program demands.
The novelty of his “Happy Monday to everyone”, south Alabama southern charm has already worn off with me and the disarray that seemed to be on display during the second half of that Furman game and watching BOTH the defensive line AND linebackers GETTING COMPLETELY MADE OUT TO BE FOOLS with those screens, NOT once, NOT TWICE, BUT OVER and OVER AGAIN!

Tyler Venables was getting repeatedly abused by Furman they were coming after him---he took bad angle after bad angle after bad angle. Maguire and Mickens just couldn't get it done either, playing way too deep off the slot. Pride got beaten multiple times at corner. Just far too many breakdowns for this type of talent.
