At least give us hope that you’re willing to address the most blatantly obvious problem we have on offense.

Oct 23, 2021, 9:13 PM

He can’t recruit for a ### and he either can’t coach or the players don’t listen. Either way he should be the 1st to go.

Re: He has to go…

Oct 24, 2021, 1:49 AM

The 2018 and 2016 teams we had a great offensive line that's one of the main reasons we won 2 National Championships . Since then it has declined significantly , which is why we got beat in the last 2 CFP games. They showed a list of the Coaches that have had the most offensive linemen drafted into the NFL . Nick Saban was at the top and Urban Meyer was on it as well . Brent Venables said tonight that his defense was tired , no wonder when they are on the field all game. We have to be able to control the ball more on offense and that starts up front.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He has to go…

Oct 27, 2021, 9:03 AM

Veneable is correct at least. Clemson needs to get a better prepunt team. It has to be mentally draining to know you will be on the field for 75% of the game.

This nepotistic staff refuses to innovate. Alabama's staff innovates and travels thru a turnstile every two years. Alabama wins championships.

If Dabo doesn't innovate, Clemson will fade into the 1990's Clemson. That is a fact.

I’m not blind and I can see how the o-line has been a problem for more than just this year. But we had QB, WR and RB talent that overcame the o-line weakness. It’s my opinion and I’m free to have my own opinion. If you don’t like it then block me. I promise you won’t hurt my feelings.

"support the team" means wanting what is best for the team - not blind allegiance. And sometimes that means replacing unsuccessful parts of the team. You folks on here who get angry about any constructive criticism baffle me. Every business in America looks for ways to improve. And with coaches getting paid millions of dollars to perform, last I checked this was a business, not a volunteer pop warner team.

Thank you. So often Clemson fans, and southern football fans in general, lose all perspective when it comes to this "game". Let's also dare to raise another issue about southern football. The South's second religion is quick to bury the real lead about the game they idolize: It is extremely violent, brutal in fact. Young men are physically battered, and in many cases their lives are forever scarred by the injuries they sustain in their early years. We don't stop to consider the quality of their lives 20 or 30 years down the road. They endure the punishment and accept the pain, all for our entertainment and vicarious glory. Oh well, I guess we can examine those issues late in life when we're just sitting around the fire at home, nothing better to do. But for now, let the games continue!

The difference is those businesses look to professionals to improve. They don't ask people sitting on their couch that have never been a leader in their industry or, more than likely, ever even had a job in it. I own an engineering firm so in order to improve my business I'm going to do what a landscaper, looking at my drawings and has no idea what they're looking at, thinks. ??

It's obvious at this point that we need new ideas, new blood on the offensive side of this program. The college game is continually evolving. One cannot expect that running the same old tired plays will work. Other teams' defenses know exactly what the offense is going to do.

Take stock:

Offense is ATROCIOUS - that's on the coaching staff.
DJU has ZERO drive - that's on the coaching staff.
OLine has been terrible for years: - that on the coaching staff.
Defense is taking on multiple injuries due to schitty offense - that's on the coaching staff.
Dabo literally refuses to acknowledge what THE ENTIRE NATION can clearly see - that's on the coaching staff.

These are ALL millionaire-coaches.....and they have ZERO answers how why this offense is God-awful.

Re: At minimum, Caldwell has to go…

Oct 24, 2021, 1:40 AM [ in reply to At minimum, Caldwell has to go… ]

The most blatantly obvious problem we have on the offense is the QB position. Full stop.

This staff went to 6 straight playoffs. 6 straight league championships. 2 national titles. They didn't just stop knowing how to coach. Dabo has said this as well. He's been shielding DJ because i suspect the kid is fragile. And we're seeing that now. It sucks, i know. But firing the coaches inst going to fix the bad QB play.

We are running the ball pretty well out of a 3 point

Oct 24, 2021, 1:51 AM [ in reply to At minimum, Caldwell has to go… ]

Stance. It’s the scheme that required them to run block out of a 2 point stance.

I’m not sure if that’s on Caldwell or stubborn leadership …

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agreed...lots of folks complain about our OL, and

Oct 24, 2021, 1:26 PM

there are legit complaints, but run blocking in a RPO scheme is just plain different than power run or older option type blocking. You CANNOT get near the push in a two point (which is used alot in RPO offenses) vs three point stance.

Oct 27, 2021, 9:29 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney talks about staff changes, perspective, and the 'storm' Clemson is in ]

It has to be coaching. It's not to say anyone on the staff sucks, but any coaching organization can get stale or too nepotistic to the point where they lose the combined mojo to make a great team. Big coaching changes have to happen. The problems on offense are not sudden. Any casual fan of Clemson knows the problems have been gradually increasing to the collapse of this season.

There's an old joke. There as a farmer that had a female barn cat that was howling mournfully day and night. He complained to a fellow farmer about the cat keeping him up at night. I know what your trouble is. The cat is constipated.
You don't say!. How do I fix it?
Well I use Dulcolax or Mirolax and just force feed it to them.
Good idea, I'll try that.
The next day the farmer came to his friend and his friend asked about the cat. Did you try the laxative?
Yep.
Did it fix the problem?
I'll say it did! Now I need to train the cat to work the field.
Why?
I suppose I should not have given her the whole bottle. Last time I saw here she had two kittens digging, two covering up and another two looking for fresh dirt! A real tiller!

Swinney needs to look for some new kittens (especially ones looking for new dirt) as he has been filling the same hole up over and over and it is beginning to stink.

Re: TNET: Swinney talks about staff changes, perspective, and the 'storm' Clemson is in

Oct 24, 2021, 1:45 AM

Yes, correct. TP is not the answer. And maybe people will stop asking for him bc you got to see him again today. He heaved that ball up on 3rd down, ripe for a INT. He has done that multiple times before. SC State game INT this year.

People really need to go back and rewatch GT 2020 and the Spring Game. TP can't throw downfield. He couldnt get a 1st down vs GT in a 70-7 game. He did make better RPO choices and extended plays. Two things DJ cant do.

Hunter Helms is the only one who showed any life vs GT. I think he'll be next up for some game snaps. 3 star walkon.

I believe TP should get starting reps in practice. Maybe if they played a few series and just see who has the hot hand. Helms should get a shot as well. I know TP moved the ball really well. But now we have a Defense problem. We need to score a lot of points. Or we will end up 6-5 or worse. I don’t understand the lack of urgency. This isn’t a storm. It’s a 5 mile wide asteroid that just hit bedrock in Clemson. I’m sorry, I love Dabo, but heads have to roll after this level decline. We need a elite coordinator. When fans can guess the play, well I bet the opposing coaches can also.

All of the quarterbacks on the team need to compete for the job. My worry is we don't have any quarterbacks. They stuck with a starting quarterback that doesn't know how to take care of the ball! As far as the defense goes they are fine. That problem is the offense can't stay on the field longer than a minute!

I don't think there is that much wrong with the O line when the QB can stand in the pocket forever and stare down his receivers, overthrow his receivers constantly, and throw pick sixes on a regular basis! It doesn't help that when he does throw a great pass that 15% of the time, the receivers drop the ball.

We had more passes thrown where receivers don’t even turn back to look for the ball today than the last 3 seasons. Looks like the first day of middle school tryouts.

I think everyone’s fear is that no coaching changes will be made in the off season. If it’s coach speak to say he’s completely happy with his staff during the season, then make changes after the season, fine. To be happy with them and make no changes will mean more of the same next year. TE, the play calling and the players lack of focus, dropped balls, etc. in the end, comes back to basic coaching. Hopefully he’ll make the needed changes.

That is what I am thinking. Dabo has shown that he will fire coaches who underperform. I am going to be shocked if he does not make changes. He can have one bad year. If he has another next season, recruiting is going to suffer. Players want to win and go to the post season. If you think about it, Dabo has gotten everything that he has asked for in facilities. Clemson is totally invested in football. Too much money is being spent to tolerate what has been visible on the field this season.

Recruiting is already suffering, I 100% guarantee. You think some scumbag like Lane Kiffin isn't in the ear of anyone we deem as holy enough to play for us (and then transfer)?

We are bleeding out, and it does not seem like there will be a solution anytime soon.

Fire Elliott!! He's an idiot.

Re: If anyone is expecting him to throw people

Recruiting is not suffering, dude. In fact, anybody can look at the program now and see playing time.

Dabo isn't going to say to the press he is going to fire anybody. My gosh, how naive are some of you? You really think he's going to sit in front of the press and say he's going to move on from his OC?
Did he do that in the Orange Bowl after giving up 70 to West Virginia? Nah, he just made the right moves and brought in a real DC.

This uncontrolled whining is way past tiresome.

Except for this year his resume is impeccable and while many are having a field day burying us, AD's still know what Dabo has built here and that the culture and blueprint works.

Me think changes will be made if changes are needed. Please remember we have a lot of our players out hurt or on covid protocol. Most of our offense line has been out or is out today. Our OL is a patchwork compared to what we have had in the past years. In addition, too many players making mistakes. I, too, don't like losing but it is what it is. Go tigers.

Re: TNET: Swinney talks about staff changes, perspective, and the 'storm' Clemson is in

Oct 23, 2021, 11:22 PM

One thing that makes Dabo so good is also a flaw - he will not publicly criticize a player or coach in the media and he will often stick with both far too long. You can list your own examples of this. He has fired one OC and one DC to the best of my memory so hopefully he will do that again before we are completely run in the ground and can't recruit anyone. Our last 2 or really QB's made up for the OL and people have talked about this for years, yet here we are.
I'm not sure doing it now will help but it couldn't hurt - but it won't happen I don't think. Everyone needs to be accountable though and that includes taking responsibility which I have not heard anyone do, save for Dabo finally saying he needs to do a better job. What has Caldwell had to say for himself? He was good and a big step up when he started but recruiting and developing an OL has clearly passed him by. Yes, we have more injuries this year but I happened to hear tonight that Notre Dame had gone through 4 left tackles this year and yet they just took USC to the woodshed. That is why you recruit and develop depth.

Gotta admitted Coach isn’t going to show his hand in terms of his staff, but, I’m calling his bluff! Change is in the air, changes are going to happen and why? I’ll tell you, Clemson fans are already giving up on any possible chance that they may just win out to go to the ACC Championship. They are selling their tickets, they are all sending a message that they want change, period. Look, if Death Valley isn’t full next weekend against Florida State, don’t think the IPTAY Donors/Alumni aren’t going to send Dabo a very loud message, either he changes or they will do it for him. Remember money talks, the garbage walks!

This team for now, I believe can pull it out, with a change at QB (Phumachan, Helms or Wilds), and moving Rencher to slot WR. This team could win out and make it to Charlotte, after that maybe the Peach ?? Bowl, or the Gator ?? Bowl. Look, still a lot of Football left, but at the end of this season, we will see changes.

Didn’t expect a win yesterday. We had to keep Pitt O off the field. Run the ball, eat time. We didn’t.

We can’t give points away. We gave away 21 - the UR call, the burn on 4th down, the shovel pass right to their D lineman, the drops. Should have been a 24 - 13 win.

After the excuses, the plan seems to be Persevere, Stay the course. Because at some point bad will become good? Really? This team is headed to a 6-6 season. Changes MUST be made NOW before recruits and fans abandon the program. The coaches and players who aren’t getting it done have to be replaced by those who will. That is the most important skill of any successful CEO. I’m not sure Dabo has that ability. We shall see.

Coach Swinney still doesnt quite get it just yet, but given the WF loss, Clemson fans with no one to cheer on in the ACC title and no playoff appearance, maybe he will. Its not for sure though, he is pretty stubborn and may “stay the course” halfway through next season when we have a couple “L’s” and recruits bail on us. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on any of our staff, its just that situations change and sometimes people that once were a good fit just aren’t anymore....we need fresh coaching talent with chips on their shoulders and something to prove to the world...likewise, some of our coaches really need to retire(Caldwell) and others need a fresh perspective and other challenges at other places(Elliot.).

Re: TNET: Swinney talks about staff changes, perspective, and the 'storm' Clemson is in

Oct 26, 2021, 5:26 PM

The glaring storm is over the lack of offense. You can blame players, injuries, transfers, age, or whatever you wish, but the fact is that this team is ranked 117/130 in total offense. They can't string together enough plays for a single drive due to lack of execution and poor gameplay. I don't even want to go into details but I'll just leave it at finding a new Offensive identity. This downward slide started several years ago not just this year. I watched Lane Kiffin being interviewed this weekend and he talked about molding the system to match the talent and identity of the strengths of the QB and other weapons. In his very first year he took a benched failure of a QB and an offense that averaged 194 passing yards per game, and turned them into the #3 ranked total offense. I see the same thing going on this year at Tennessee. What about Joe Brady and LSU in 2019. And look what Saban did at Alabama. He watched Deshaun go off on him and knew that he had to evolve from his old-school cloud of dust offense.

What did you do after the West Virginia debacle? You went out and found Brent Venables.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lol. "This downward slide started several years ago"

Oct 26, 2021, 5:53 PM

We averaged being the 6th best offense in the country the "last several years", and we have a national championship, a #2 and a #4 finish.

By comparison, Alabama has a #2 finish, no playoffs, and a national championship in the "last several years".

These are the two best teams in the country the "last several years".

In the previous "several years", we were also national champions, #2, and #4. We were also the second best team of those "several years".

The previous two sets of "several years" are identical.

We are having a rough season .. it is not part of any "downward slide".

My Swinney it always has to be the staff. Recruiting staff or coaching staff. So basically you are just being adept at living in denial or you just don't want to tell the truth.
