TNET: Swinney says Tigers have chance "to be really special" at skill positions

Swinney says Tigers have chance "to be really special" at skill positions

Quarterback DJ Uiagalelei has a chance to be one of the best players in the nation in 2021, but he has a supporting cast that might be the envy of every other quarterback in the country. Head coach Dabo Swinney simply hopes the Tigers average 80 plays per game so all of the playmakers get a chance to touch the ball.

"Dat Boy"s comment about hoping we average

Apr 16, 2021, 8:19 AM

80 offensive plays a game is on the money. For me, as John Q. Public Fan, we are at our best when we are running up-tempo, HUNH mode. Maybe not to the frenetic Chad Morris pace, but nothing irritates me more than seeing us run up to the line, and then sit on our haunches while the QB looks over to the sideline waiting on a play. That brings Tommy Bowden flashbacks, and that is about as welcome as intestinal gas.

Running fast plays works both ways. Their defense isn’t set and are subject to our big gains. The other teams run fast like a few teams against our defense last year, and we are subject to give up big plays like against OS.

My hope is that the best players take the majority of the snaps regardless if that best player is a true freshman, or a 5th year senior. Just play the guy that will benefit the team with all plays the best!!!

Hopefully the top 2-3 dogs will “clearly” emerge at RB

And they will get sufficient touches to get into the flow of the game. Hopefully we’ll have a clear #1 and primary backup coming out of fall camp.

Depth is one thing but a “by committee” approach rarely works IMO. Subbing for rest, injuries and in blow outs is fine but even then _ the better, younger players need the carries and experience.

I never really know how to interpret Coach-speak on depth. LOL

Interesting and maybe I read too much into it when Coach Swinney states "3 of our top 5 receivers did not play last year." Maybe he's talking just last year. And I completely buy it with Ross, but high potential Ngata and Ladson have remained injured practice players for two years. IMHO EJ, Ajou and Beaux Collins have the skill sets to start or play heavy reps in 2021 - and a healthier EJ outplayed Ngata and Ladson last year and showed better hands. I hope the young guys get their shot. Lots of talent - it will be interesting to see who emerges from the pack at WR and RB.
