Swinney says offense has to cut down miscues, vows group will be more prepared

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney met with the media Sunday evening, and the big topic of conversation was the lack of offensive production in Saturday’s 14-8 victory over Georgia Tech. Swinney acknowledged that offensive miscues were a big reason for the 285 total yards of offense and 14 points. Full Story »

Did he just say “we got who we’ve got”???

“ Our players really, really care. They're coachable. They're humans. They're not video game people. We have to help them. You don't want to kill their spirit. This is the best we've got. It's kind of where we are right now.”

Well we do have who we have. I don't care if our team is 10-0 or 0-10 I will yell and scream for our Tigers. Problem is not our players. Coach admitted they were not prepared. That is on Elliot. He needs to improve. He needs to put our players in a position to succeed. GO TIGERS and go stomp some wolfpack but.

You obviously have never played a sport. Teams prepare and it is not easy to just flip a switch and change but that is what we did and we won the game. The nay sayers keep talking about Cade but if he follows this site might he be thinking about Plan B? Opinions on this board will not change anything inside the football building but fan support will help.

I get that, but they did see what GT did in the UCF film. If it was there then TE had to know it was a possibility but dismissed it.

I'm personally not sure of a solution, BUT!
1. There is a limited number of hours by NCAA rules.
2. Those being critical, answer this, Why would you spend your limited amount of prep time on a defense, that a team used only once, in the prior season?
Common sense would say practice on what you see the opponent doing generally most of the time.
Just some food for thought..

Offenses have the ability to dictate

Sep 19, 2021, 10:37 PM

At the snap offenses know what they are going to do and defenses have to react.

It doesn’t matter what the defense does, the offense can do something to exploit it.

We have become way too easy to shut down. We don’t seem to know how to stress or put pressure on a defense at all.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was a cop out by Dabo.He needs to call Elliott out!

Sep 19, 2021, 11:12 PM [ in reply to Re: Did he just say “we got who we’ve got”??? ]

He knows his Offensive Coordinator is sucking pond water at this point. But instead of saying Elliott needs to get his ### in gear like he did with Lyn J Dixon. Dabo is protecting his fragile OC's feelings.

I understand your point, but I would say the coaches should consider the current weaknesses. Ask themselves would they use this scheme to exploit what we are having trouble with? That’s what GT did. They considered what they saw Clemson struggling with, and asked themselves if they have the right players to go to that scheme. For example, the three man front was probably considered possible because our Oline is struggling to get a push and in some instances whiffing on the blitzing LB.

That makes it sound like they don't have talent and recruiting has been lacking. That is not the case, but something is lacking. THere are teams playing all day and night with less offensive talent than us and have very productive offenses.

Everyone needs to remember that Dabo coached the 1st team in history to go 15-0. Everyone also has to remember most of those players are gone.

Sep 19, 2021, 10:01 PM

Don't know when I've seen so many Coaches. I played high school football and I don't know squat about the College game. All I do know is that we have a great Head Coach and if you want to keep him, you better support him because he can go anywhere. Coach will fix it. We may miss the playoffs this year. We are spoiled kids due to our past success. Fans have to learn how to handle adversity just like the team. If we do miss the playoffs, it won't be for lack of trying. Sometimes, stuff happens. Go Tigers!

badge-donor-15yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh no. I sure hope we don't lose Tony Elliott to another.

Sep 19, 2021, 11:15 PM

Nooooooooooooo.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don’t get it.

Sep 20, 2021, 8:11 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney says offense has to cut down miscues, vows group will be more prepared ]

Look, acting like you have no problem doesn’t fix it. I get there are people with blinders on who cheer anything. I lived through the Hatfield years and boo’d his 10-2 team. Why? Ford had put together the team to win it all again. I had many fellow Tigers looking at me like I was crazy. Two years later, they were on board. Take the first three games of Kelly Bryant vs Trevor Lawrence. The majority of TigerNet boards kept bashing me for screaming for Trevor Lawrence. Look how that turned out! I am usually the first to start talking smack about issues on our team. I may be the rare Tiger fan who can actually see a defense and name it. (Tampa II, robber, etc.) im not saying I know it all. But, I know our play calling on offense has become predictable. Billy Napier predictable. The only thing worse is Elliott’s hubris as he refuses to change. I also see an offensive line that couldn’t hit water if it fell out of a boat. They are missing twists, stunts, and are not getting multiple blocks on one play. We should have lineman downfield taking on the back seven after pancaking their initial assignment. I also see a QB playing bad football. I would have benched him in the 3rd quarter just to send a message.
All that said, this is fixable stuff. Maybe it will take a new o line coach. Maybe a butt chewing of the o coordinator. I am very concerned. The best is the standard. We are not getting that right now.
I love my Tigers win or lose. And I will call a spade a spade. That doesn’t make me a bad fan. I lived through the lean years when 8 wins would have been awesome. My support has never wavered. Don’t confuse calling out an issue with not loving the Tigers!!!

So in other words, when a team copies what GT did or

Sep 19, 2021, 10:07 PM

what UNC did in 2019 (same defense), then 14 to 21 is max. Everyone should play that defense. Why don't they play it on Alabama or Ole Miss?

We've got who we've got? No joke, they were top recruits. Why haven't they gotten better since arriving. Why are they this lost on offense? I watch football all day lond and not sure I see an offense anywhere as timid and apprehensive as our offense. It really is obvious to look at.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Once again, he blames the players, not the mediocre OC.

Sep 20, 2021, 12:16 AM

Gosh, it was so unfair that GT's DC changed to a defense that we hadn't prepared for. I'm filing a complaint with the ACC.

Note to opponents: For Clemson, simply switch to a defense that you don't normally run. If you run a 3-4, switch to a 4-3. If you run a 4-3, switch to a 4-2-5. Elliott won't have a clue how to adjust his vanilla offense.

Just one question; Is being pushed around by the other guys defensive line considered a "miscue"?

Re: TNET: Swinney says offense has to cut down miscues, vows group will be more prepared

Sep 20, 2021, 4:35 AM

What about cutting down on the stupid play calling miscues by Elliot. Go past page 6 in the play book for different plays. I don't think they ever ran the "Hunter Renfrow" quick slant across the middle for 5 yds and a first down. Never ran a wheel route. Never ran a TE down the middle. The brick dropped by Gallaway was not down the middle. Ran Ross 1 time across the middle unsuccessfully. You mean you can't run it again. He has absolutely no concept of diversity or creativity. I don't think DJ ever faked a hand off. raised up and threw a pass
For God sakes, get a diversified play caller. Shipley up the middle half the time aint gonna get it done

Re: TNET: Swinney says offense has to cut down miscues, vows group will be more prepared

Sep 20, 2021, 6:42 AM

The middle of the field was open. Tony Elliott ignored it. The middle will be open against NC State too. Another thing. I was shocked when Dabo said they should have run DJ in the Georgia game. Every Clemson fan at Charlotte was wanting that too. The buck stops with Dabo. I love the guy but, he needs to stop with the after game “ I wished…” He has the headsets on and can tell CTE what he expects. Dabo has no problem getting in CBV face during a game. I hope that he is in Elliot’s ear as well. If we do not see major improvements Saturday against NC State, it is going to be a long season.

Sep 20, 2021, 6:26 AM

"We have who we have". That is correct, 4 and 5 stars. Some are Freshmen and making Freshmen mistakes and some are super Seniors and yet we still look horrible on offense. Its sad to see that we have a National Championship Defense and a Liberty Bowl offense. It is fixable becase we have the players to fix it but it needs to happen fast because we are on a quick collision course out of the top 10.

Wow. That is shocking. We pay the two of them 10 mil a year for that performance and response? Everyone we play knows the trick now. All you have to do is change. It's not like they had a 2 hour halftime to get things worked out. Basically what he said is we don't have Travis and Trevor anymore so we are what we are. Unbelievable. I think the curtain just got pulled back on ole Oz.

Totally agree.... the inability to adjust play calling is sickening. My fear is that the inept offense we have seen so far is going to waste what very well might be the best championship defense that I have seen on an NCAA football field.
