Swinney not looking for anyone's advice, says his team will respond to adversity

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney isn’t reaching out to anyone for advice. He says he knows the issues surrounding the program and knows how to fix them. Full Story »

That’s right coach. The program has had adversity and the way y’all have handled it has prevented the fan base from having to deal with adversity up until now. Now the fan base has to deal with adversity and some can’t handle it. Go ahead folks - tell me all about how wrong I am and prove my point.

What would a world be like if humans never complained about what they didn't like seeing with emotion, and just went on by never saying a word. Can you imagine that, we would be in a world without change for the betterment of man kind. Complaining calls out for change, and if enough of people don't complain, there will be no change, why change what the majority is ok with....

if people would cut down on complaining by 20%.

The world would be a better place if people just spoke their mind less because it often shows an empty coffer.

It's more about keyboard mavericks looking for opportunities to create controversy and to create a voice to make them feel empowered when they truly don't care about their voice.

People today can hide behind a keyboard, and by doing that they can play with multiple accts as a devil's advocate with basically seeing which acct get's the most traction and run with it. Some people will employ multiple accts just to get reactions. It's a sick fetish for people to get jollies from beating down others.

Complaining isn’t the problem. The people that make personal attacks and call others profanity laced names and that kind of stuff over a football game is just a little over the top in my opinion. And it’s just that - my opinion. But I am just as entitled to my opinion as all those posters in here calling me names for it.

So on, all should trust they are indeed on the way out. However, we saw no evidence of such improvement after the clown show with GTech. It appears thinks may have actually gotten worse!

Most fans will give benefit of the doubt as long as they can see things getting corrected.

Yes, you are correct. But look at Alabama - is it all Nick Saban?? They send 7 to NFL, change all assistant coaches last year, get new freshmen players, and are still as strong as ever. Nothing changes on the field. I am a over 50-year fan, graduate, will always be a fan of Clemson, and my blood runs orange, but what can we do be as nearly good as Alabama? That is, we need something to change.

That’s my exact issue with things…

This isn’t a one hit wonder….we had established ourselves; therefore, recruiting, coaching talent, support staff, facilities, etc should’ve all been in place….and seemingly were until last season where we started catching glimpses something wasn’t quite right.

And then this year gets here and there seems to be a lack of depth, in-fighting, coaching issues, frustration all around and enough subtle chaos for me to wonder “is anyone leading this team or we just gonna hope things just work themselves out cause they always seem to recently”

I am here to prove you wrong. I belong to the group that will pay IPTAY dues and purchase season tickets no matter what. I have sat through some ugly football through the years. Cannot handle adversity? Give me a break. I will be at every home game at Clemson. As a true fan, I call it like it is. I believe that Tony Elliott cannot coach, DJ has the yips, and Taisun deserves a chance to play. The buck stops with Dabo. After reading Elliott’s comments yesterday, it is obvious that he has still not taken ownership of his problems. I wish that Tim Bourret would give Dabo the stats on how bad this offensive team is playing right now. The buck stops with Dabo. He will either man up and fix the problems or it is going to get uglier.

You’re not in the group of fans I’m referring to. Sounds like you will continue to support the Tigers in a positive manner through thick and thin. I was referring to the fans that call for coaches heads after 2 losses, profess to know more than the coaches and call anyone who disagrees any assortment of names from stupid to something much more profane. I don’t like where this team is either but I will remain civil in my criticism and not make it personal toward any player, coach or fan. You sound like your reaction will be civil as well so the comments were not directed at you.

3 or 4 MISTAKES???

Sep 28, 2021, 11:29 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney not looking for anyone's advice, says his team will respond to adversity ]

The Coach repeats in one form or another that they are just 2 or 3 mistakes away from 4-0... Coach, count the # of 3 and outs! 2 or 3 mistakes just doesn't cover it nor does you saying that give we fans any assurances that YOU are facing reality in how bad this team has performed.

Sep 28, 2021, 11:39 PM [ in reply to You Gotta Love This Guy ]

Who says they can turn this around next year? If they could not detect the true skill of the team thru 1/3 of the season and make the changes necessary, who has a firm faith that they won't let it happen again? Changes must be made quickly to pick this team up out of the mud or it will be a doubt-filled off-season!

I think it’s fine to say those things in public and I support Dabo. However, if he’s not looking everywhere (inside and outside the program) for help/answers and really thinks all of our issues just come down to a few missed assignments and lack of execution, then we have bigger problems. Try harder is not always the answer…

You, and others like you, don't think he knows this already? He knows everything all of us have seen and more. He's inside the program and sees it up close and we don't. So, I think he freaking knows we have issues.
That's my problem with all of the whining. He knows more than we do and if he needs to make some changes he probably will because he took an average program and turned it into a super powerhouse. 2 national titles deserve a little more respect than some fan idiots are giving at the moment.

Re: TNET: Swinney not looking for anyone's advice, says his team will respond to adversity

Sep 29, 2021, 2:02 PM

I am sure that he knows this... but him knowing it and acting otherwise is not a good look and insults the intelligence of everyone that does realize that there might be bigger problems. Dabo is the first person every year to say this team hasn't won anything yet. But in reading this he laid out the entire history of the Dabo Swinney era of Clemson football without a glimpse of a solution to fix the future other than the word fundamentals. Don Shula was probably the best coach (in my opinion) there ever was when it came to adapting his scheme to his players. We have consistently done that on the defensive side of the ball. We haven't needed to that on the offensive side except of the year between DW4 and TL16 and this year. Both years we had an outstanding championship level defense. We did not make the adjustments on offense the first time (when all KB could do was run the ball) and it cost a championship game. This year it is costing more. Not hating on anyone, just very concerned.

Could not agree more. Dabo will say the same ole thing next week after the BC loss.
Love the comments about Nick Saban replacing 9 NFL'ers and the whole O coaching staff and not missing a beat, and yes, a lot that is recruiting and building the reputation that Bama prepares players for the NFL which only helps recruiting. Nick is also quick to pull someone out that isn't performing, just think the SEC playoffs with Jalan Hurts and Tua.
Dabo needs to pull the blinders off !
I do not want to hear the same ole excuses next week.
As fans, if DJ goes 3 & out this week, we should boo him and Dabo out of the stadium -
Hey, seen it done at NCSU over much less than that.
Not a tradition at Clemson as we tend to have more class than that, but gotta get Dabo's attention some how since he (they) refuse to look at social media or listen to the criticism at all.
With the attitude that "I know what's wrong and don't need anyone to tell me how to fix it" won't get it done if he just thinks a few plays cost the game. How about the 47 extra plays NCSU had to beat the crap out of our defense! There are other offensive schemes. The problem with the current scheme is DJ is not illusive or deceptive and the O Line cannot block good enough for a drop back immobile QB. Need a dual threat QB that can improvise and buy some time.

Was Dabo patting himself on the back for getting to double OT? With NCS missing 3 FGs? Wow.

The penalties, mistakes, obvious regression of DJ, inept O line, no running game, confused receivers are all on YOU and your staff, Dabo.

Get your act TOGETHER or soon you will be living in a van down by the RIVER!

I have no experience in college football, other than being a fan. So I will not question the X and O’s. But I’m have a lot of management experience, and I think it’s a big mistake not to seek help when things go off the tracks. If we aren’t willing to learn from things other leaders have done in adversity, we will just continue to reinvent the wheel. If I didn’t think that I know him better, this interview makes Dabo sound like an arrogant know it all. Go Tigers.

His overall record at Clemson as head coach is 142-35. His record in Bowls is 10-7. His CFP record is 6-4. I will trust him to know how to lead the Clemson Football program. Maybe he does know X and Os.

Sep 28, 2021, 10:48 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney not looking for anyone's advice, says his team will respond to adversity ]

Did you even read what I said? Maybe before you fly off the handle and tell me things that I already know you should consider what I was saying. I didn't say that Dabo is an arrogant know it all. I said that if I didn't know better, he would seem to be so. However, I did offer that I do know a little bit about management, and I'm concerned that he is not willing to look for help in this situation. While you are spitting out facts and figures to me, you might recall what happened to the defensive coordinator after the butt kicking that he mentioned us taking to West Virginia. He made one of his best hires after relieving the DC of his duties. You might also recall the last time Alabama played UGA in the national championship game. UGA was winning at the half. Saban pulled Hurts as the QB and put Tua in in the 3rd quarter. Alabama won the game. Dabo is loyal to a fault to his people, most of the time. I'm not calling for anyone to be replaced, fired, whatever. I'd just like to see a willingness to admit that the ship is adrift and has not shown any signs of being righted after 3 weeks of promises since the UGA loss. Maybe it will happen this weekend against a 4-0 B.C. who is inexplicably an underdog in the game. I pray that will come to pass. I don't care if it's by a blowout or a 1 point win. We're both on the same side here. You just don't have the same concern that I do about the management style RIGHT NOW, not in the past, but in the present. I could share with you loads of stories about leaders who dogmatically refused to see the need for help and didn't ask for it, but you probably are not interested in hearing them.
Go Tigers.

Yes, I wish there were a lot less, “What have you done for me lately” attitude in our fan base; and a lot more, “Thanks for building a program that we can all be proud of, “a class act” program.

Hey, I’m not picking on anyone. I’m a little frustrated, a little baffled; but after it’s all said and done we have three National Championships that nobody can take away from us. They happened in my lifetime too! I watched us play from the stands as a student, 1965-1969 and I NEVER dreamed of having even one.

I know that I have gotten a little spoiled over the last five years. I always took pride rooting for our Tigers, standing behind them no matter how the season was going. Sure it’s a lot more fun when you’re going undefeated one year, and going to the CFP every year! But isn’t that life? Ups and downs? Tiger football, to me, is something I cherish, and it’s a little thing that helps take the rough edges of of life. I know this won’t sit well with a lot of T-netters; I haven’t solved anything concerning X’s and O’s and W’s and L’s.

All of us are different, but I just choose to love on our Players, Coaches, all the way down to the kid with a water bucket. This year, they need it a lot more than others.

Yeah, he probably isn't sleeping well. He knows he has to make some changes and like he did with Kevin Steele, he will again. Steele was a ###### bag at Nebraska and other places, so he probably was easy to fire. But, Elliott is a good guy and that will be tough. But, I do believe Dabo loves winning as much as anyone on this board if not more.

I don't know why some are so #### critical of the man. He's brought Clemson to the top and I feel like he deserves better than this crap.

Sep 28, 2021, 6:03 PM

Tough balancing act---don't want to dump on your OC, yet the results are sub-mediocre in a mediocre league. Being overly defensive of staff is a losing strategy. Coach Swinney would be better advised to acknowledge the problems and spread the blame (including to himself), while speaking positively of the OC's contributions to the Clemson program. Complacency, or even the impression of complacency, will not work with the fan base, and all those prospective recruits are looking on and wondering if Clemson's biggest selling point---BCS almost guaranteed every year---will still pertain. There is nothing wrong with showing more unhappiness all the way around. "I've got this" doesn't work.
