Roster Management is VERY hard & critical to success.

Re: Agreed....

It is very hard, and especially since covid, BUT, the best thing that we all should remember before we start calling Dabo an Indian giver just like head coaches in other conferences, but unlike most other coaches, Dabo lets those walkons know upfront that their Scholly is on a year to year basis just in case something happens like what has happened this year. Would Dabo have ever taken a scholarship away from Renfrow, I would bet my entire left arm that it would've never happened, not in this lifetime!!!

I feel like it got a whole lot easier thanks to NIL

Feb 3, 2023, 1:43 PM [ in reply to Agreed.... ]

I mean am I missing something here? Can't Dabo just openly say "We are pulling football scholarships from 3 former walk-ons and covering their tuition with NIL money". Hell he could pay for them himself it would be a drop in the bucket for that guy. Especially considering they would be paying in-state tuition in most cases.

No, he can't say that. The school cannot be involved in NIL deals.

How many of the coaches sons are on scholarship? (I really don't know, but there were several.) Considering salaries, especially at the top, if there are still some on scholarship those should be the first taken if needed.

Three NIL deals to cover their costs

Feb 2, 2023, 4:42 PM

Has to be something there for a player nicknamed "Quadzilla."

Hunter Helms, Preparation H.

And the long snapper, Snapper Mowers.

No issues

In my opinion, I think we'll see at least 3 transfer. I hope we don't have any... but Helms could start for a lot of schools. So could Dominique. Both of who I don't see making the 3 deep. Perhaps an oline or Dline will transfer. Perhaps Will Taylor.

As I said, I hope none. But worse case scenario, it'll be one semester. And they most likely could get academic money.

Don't hold your breath on Taylor leaving, he is a two sport athlete that is at baseball practice.

So isn't it somewhat likely that he could have a great season in baseball and decide to enter the MLB draft? He already passed it up once...

You can’t get academic money and play football. If that’s your scenario, you are not permitted to enter a game.

I just spoke to someone in Athletic Dept. Academics and they said that is not true. We have many athletes playing football and other sports that are on Academic Scholarships.

Re: Three NIL deals to cover their costs

All D1 football scholarships are full rides.

There are rules that prevent "hiding" athletes behind academic scholarships, or scholarships for other sports. That's why anyone playing both football and baseball has to count as 1 of the 85 football scholarship. You can't give them a baseball scholarship and allow them to play football, too.

In non-football sports, it is common to have players on athletic or combined athletic/academic scholarships, as many of those sports' scholarships are partial.

Electric snapper mowers should have never happened, so he should count himself lucky to have gotten a year or two at Clemson for free plus all other scholarship perks!!! IMO, he made out like a fat rat that was given a grocery coupon worth multi months of free groceries....

Isn’t Dabo an investor in a restaurant called Walk-ons?

Feb 2, 2023, 7:12 PM [ in reply to Three NIL deals to cover their costs ]

Seems like the deal would make itself

Hunter could start elsewhere. Just like Chase Brice.
He is a valuable back up, so I would Like to see him stay.

Let 3 walk-on’s pay for the fall semester, and then Dabo may be able to put them back on scholarship in January.
With December graduates, plus the Covid extensions he could come up with 3.

Go Tigers!

Chase Brice was a top rated 4 star recruit. Helms was a walk on. Their situations are not similar.

Hunter's deal could be a real pain in the A$$ though...

Honestly if you look around there are some dudes who definitely shouldn't be on scholarship. They don't need 7 5'8" wide receivers.

Do you have a list as I don’t believe we have many if any in this category .

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Correct … there are zero 5’8” WRs on scholarship

Feb 2, 2023, 7:51 PM

And there are no Swinney’s (or any coaches sons) on scholarship either if this breakdown is accurate.

Especially SLOW 5'8" receivers who can't run and cut a lick. Now, if you have a speed guy who is a water bug with great hands, that's a mule of a different color........but that WR room is full of the former, not the latter.

There is an easy fix that's staring you in the face. I've sad all along, who gives a crap about an 85 scholly limit. You can literally recruit as many players as you want. Bring in kids that are scholarship worthy and tell them, we're bringing you in as a walk on technically but your bills, tuition, housing books are paid for. A reoccurring NIL deal that equates to exactly what it costs for a scholarship. How much is that? 20k a semester/per player. Pocket change. A couple of Saturdays in the off season signing autographs outside Wal Mart for 5 bucks apiece.

Usually works out. Some graduate in May and decide to leave. Some grad in August and pay there way thru Summer. We've been there before

I don't understand how, even with the covid exception, you

1

Feb 2, 2023, 9:21 PM

can get seven years. I heard there was someone somewhere, that was coming back for an eighth year! I thought it used to be that you had five years to play four. With a free covid year, that would make it six years to play five. So how are some getting seven, or maybe even eight, years?

Your “friend” is an idiot

But if you ask any "expert" behind a microphone

Feb 3, 2023, 8:50 AM

Swinney is an idiot for not adding 10 immediate contributors from the transfer portal like FSU and other teams.

Feb 3, 2023, 8:24 PM

Any Swinneys still on scholarship? He may have to pay for one?!?!?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"desperate" it is not

Feb 4, 2023, 9:00 AM

Dabo says it will be three former walk-ons who would not have them renewed for the new season.

That would be unfortunate (especially for the young men) but far from desperate.

also, I thought we had just gotten down to 87, but I don't recall what the last roster change was. anyone else recall?
