Great perspective from David on all of the drama that we are experiencing now, but one thing that has not changed is the man sitting on the horse at the top of the hill looking over Clemson Football!

The great coaches like Bear Bryant, John Wooden, Coach K, Nick Saban, etc. and Dabo have vision, character, personality, charisma—- they are great CEOs who hire the right people and recruit the right players and promote the program to the supporters.
Dabo will put it back together and make it even better.

Dabo Swinney has never been given the credit he deserves by the media or fans. We forget he provided the culture and work place environment for Chad Morris, Jeff Scott, Tony Elliot and Brent Venables to showplace their talents. They all were great in Dabo’s environment and I’m sure He gave guidance and input to them all as well as praise. I wish them all great success but as Chad Morris has shown, sometimes you’re just a second banana even though you might not recognize it.

Dec 11, 2021, 4:55 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney and the Tigers put drama in the past, begin the climb back up that mountain ]

This program that is headed for the 2022 season, IMO, it is a much better program than what Dabo started with in 2009. It was only a couple of pretty good recruiting season, and our FB program marched to the top of college FB and shoved Bama out of the way in 2015, and winning the 2015/2026 Natty. A bunch of those guys, the seniors, with a few of our better juniors took of to the NFL, and some of them are still there representing Clemson pretty well.

No doubt the axe glanced off the log with our two Coordinators leaving for Head Coaching jobs, and neither of them could have gotten D-1 power 5 Head Coaching job when Dabo brought them to Clemson, and counting Jeff Scott, that is 3 of Dabo's coordinators becoming HC's, and I'm not even counting Chad Morris bc he became an embarrassment that thought that he knew it all, and he was totally against sticking around to learn just how difficult it would be to win at the college level, especially at the D-1 power 5 level, and he is right back where he started, at the High School level where kids dream about playing at a D-1 power 5 school like a Clemson.

Dabo took our Tiger program starting out with a broken team that couldn't beat a Wake Forest team under Tommy Bowden in 2008 that was a 3-3 team when Bowden left, and when Dabo took over as HC in 2009, we've never even come close to losing to weak Forest again, and we had a 9-5 season in 2009.

Our worst, and only losing season under Dabo was a 6-7 record in 2010. Every season after 2010, we had a 10 plus wins every season after 2010, with most seasons being 12 plus wins, with 3 seasons being 14-1, and the first team ever to have 15-0 season in the FB playoff era, and a 10-2 season in the covid 19 era with a shorter season, and we can possibly have a 10-3 season, this season, but the worst it can be is a 9-4 in a season with more injuries that it's ever been with a Dabo coached team, and a 5 star QB that has had a terrible year.

Do I have any worries, or questions about if Dabo can get us back to the playoffs, and winning championships at the highest level, H&11 no I don't, things will have to get much worse than they are now before that I will entertain any questions like that, or before I have any worries about Dabo getting us back to where we belong at the top of college FB. I have no fear about Dabo getting us back at the top bc, I have seen him get us to the top from a much worst condition than we are in right now. We all have seen Dabo take a broken Tommy Bowden team, and without any Head Coaching experience at all, he was as green as spring grass when he took over a broken Clemson FB program, and he has taken that broken FB program to

Dabo's win/loss record since He's been our HC is 149–36, and that was probably unheard of for a first time HC at any D-1 FB power 5 program until Dabo done it!!!

The below link shows all the proof that we need about what Dabo Swinney is capable of doing, and he is a real Head Coach now, more so than he was when he became as our HC back in 2009!!! As they say, the proof is in the pudding, but in Dabo's case, the proof in the record of a first time ever college FB HC!!!

Go Dabo, and start what ever you're going to do with replacing some coordinators, in Dabo I trust....

Understand what you're saying but a lot of credit does have to go to Tommy Bowden. Dabo's said the same thing and it wasn't just lip service. It wasn't like Dabo took a job at scar and built what it is today. You kinda make it sound like Clemson was in the place scar is now.

Tommy Bowden turned Clemson University's football program around and started the move to upgrade facilities . He also brought Dabo to Clemson and recommended him when he left . He deserves to be remembered for what he did for our Alma Mater.

The point of the comment has nothing to do with the age group, it’s journalism 101, you want to appeal to and relate to as many people as possible, the point is “clicks” and return readers, you minimize that when you don’t relate to everyone…. I think you guys are reading waaaay too deep into the comment, was merely an observation about journalism and media not attack on anyone or age group lol

Re: Good grief

Dec 11, 2021, 11:33 AM

Lol, the message is clear but that’s not what I was referring to, it’s 2021 and making references that are more relatable that everyone is familiar with makes the most sense in journalism, media, anything you want everyone to consume. That’s why media companies do polls and ratings analysis, you get more “clicks” or future “clicks” and consumption if you can appeal and relate to large groups, not just one group. It would be the same point if something only a millennial would understand, you wouldn’t want to do that either.

As an alum and and old guy who attended my 1st Clemson

Dec 11, 2021, 10:20 AM

game in 1964, and we beat Furman, I feel the need and right to speak on this matter.

I absofrigginlutely hate the timing and the way these changes were made. It made Clemson look like every other school.

I have read articles involving both Venables and Elliott where each talked about "Why mess with happy", "Keeping commitment to players we recruited and promises we made to them and their families", etc. I remember articles where CTE, talked about getting ready for bowl and playoff games precluded talking with other schools about job openings and what that would say to our players and that it would show lack of commitment to the Clemson family.

CBV situation was pushed by the OU administration, but no commitment to his players, their parents and our team stopped him from talking to and leaving Clemson just before the bowl games and rhe early signing day. That's 4 days from today. But at least he got a record setting amount of money for a 1st time head coach. I love what CBV was able to do for us and on one hand, I am happy for him and his family, that he is now a head coach. I do not like or respect his timing one #### bit, when you look back at what he repeatedly said and what he 'believed'. I wish him all the best, seriously. But he proved he is just the same as most people, myself included, where money and opportunity outweighed my priciples. I usually ended up regretting it. I hope it works out spectacularly well for him. I hope we play OU for the National Title every year, but stomp a mudhole in their butt and walk it dry.

CTE is more disappointing than Brent Venables, but for a slightly different reason is in the mix. CTE was a Clemson grad and talked recently also mentioning how he loved raising his family here and also said "why mess with happy?". Principles aren't allowed to get in the way of more $ and promotions. Tony will probably start at 3.5 million or better. Good for him, but it wasn't like he or Brent weren't set for life, unless they blew their money. I believe Dave Chappelle called it. Having F.U. money.

Timing? Screw it. Players? Well "it's business".

To be clear, I am not upset or mad, or butthurt about them leaving for greener pastures and more money. I just hate the timing and the way they did it because they walled over their players to do it. Many who will be playing their last football game of their lives. That's where the bad smell comes from.

I feel a bit foolish for having put our coaches on such a high pedestal and overlooked human nature. That's on me.

I am glad though that CTE didn't go to Duke. The city and county of Durham is terrible with a lot of violent crime.

As for Dan Radacovich, I couldn't care less and NOW, MAYBE, we can get a good basketball coach.

Go Tigers!!!

Re: As an alum and and old guy who attended my 1st Clemson

Dec 11, 2021, 10:41 AM

These guys did not get to dictate the timing. Some things are out of their control. I’m sure given the option both of them would have waited until after the bowl game but I highly doubt they were given that option.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, they did have a say in the timing.

Dec 11, 2021, 1:47 PM

O.U. may not have liked it, but in years past, according to articles with both CBV & CTE, they had declined based on the points I made.

I have also placed money in front of my principles too. But it bit me on my ### each time, eventually. I hope they get away without that happening to them.

I'll always appreciate what they BOTH did for Clemson, but I still hate the way and timing.

We can agree to disagree. Or not.

They both gave a decade to Clemson. We knew they would leave eventually. They needed to leave before signing day so the programs they are going to aren't in turmoil from day one.

Yes, we took a hit but we've still got a top 20 class coming in. If they had lost their coaches and didn't have a replacement by signing day, that's a potential total loss on a recruiting class that will haunt you for 5 years.

Why would you leave to go coach a program with that handicap? Why would you do that to the program you are about to be the face of?

They have been incredibly loyal to Clemson; but their loyalty has to switch the minute the ink is dry. I'm sure they will be loyal to their actual friends in Clemson. The rest is just business.

Don't ever fall in love with someone you are paying to be nice to you.

It was business and they were very highly.compensated. The quotes about family, messing with happy were made by then and neither was under duress at those times. As you say someone (school) could be set back 5 years due to delaying in making hires for new head coaches and their staffs.

Now consider that it was your/our hat that was crapped in (set back 5 years). Who's hat are we concerned about Clemson's or O.U.'s or UVA's. I would much rather their hat was full of stink than ours.

Re: As an alum and and old guy who attended my 1st Clemson

I am pretty sure the not messing with happy comments were in respect to not taking just any job. I'm not sure that Venables would have taken any other head coaching job in the country. I believe that Coach Elliot is a very good fit for Virginia. Both men have seemed to been completely focused on the team in the past when we were in the playoffs. Neither of these men took the jobs because of the money. They took them because they are good Head Coaching jobs, and the money goes along with it.

You tell Valley Boy to go sit in a corner and be quiet. Maybe you should temper your complaints. This is how the timing works for coaching changes because of the early signing period. I'm sure that both men were open and honest with Dabo and you should be happy for both men. If you can't, "go sit in the corner and be quiet."

Time to climb that mountain. 1. Hire Joe Brady or Jeff Scott as OC, 2. Hire Jim Leonhard (who has the #4 defense in the country at WI with 3 stars and makes less than 1 million a year) as DC, 3. Work to maintain current roster (if you havent read Mukuba's tweet, you might want too). Then we can be back at the top.

Interesting you bring that up about the roster. I've seen many posts on here about it being normal for recruits to decommit as soon as a coordinator leaves. I did a cursory check into that. Bama didn't lose any when smart left or that crazy oc they had.

OSU and penn st lost theirs as well as Oklahoma st. Zero decommited and all had 18+ commits. Interesting to know if there's any real hard data on it. I can understand a head coach. Anyway, Ohio State hired Knowles as the DC. Many on here suggested he would be a good hire for us. The day after osu announced Knowles, 247 CB'd Jihad Campbell to OSU. Will be interested to see where these kids end up.

As for who Dabo hires, I really could careless as long as they can recruit. it's about the Jimmy and Joes.

Did you read Mukuba's comment on twitter before you posted your comment? Also, just today Ajou Ajou left...maybe for more playing time or maybe bc TE left, who knows? He may end up at VA with TE...

Why would Jeff Scott take a decrease in pay and go backwards?

Because asuch as I like Jeff Scott, they have not made progress commensurate with his compensation and the outlay for facilities.

I'd hate to see it, but unless he can get a decent bowl next season, his days will be numbered at USF.

Its easy to understand...Jeff Scott has not moved USF forward in 2 years..College football moves fast and the question is..Does he want to come to Clemson and make a little pay cut as OC or risk another year at USF and get fired at the end of the year? The chance to be the OC at Clemson is now and it wont be there next year..plus we were paying TE 2 million a year, Scott only makes 2.2 million a year..so to me its worth the move..

Wisconsin has the top defense in the country and by a long shot. Not sure where you came up with #3, but he has very few stars to work with.

The fun is not in the climbing or spiraling, it is in the winning. I just want to keep winning….that’s my prayer and Christmas wish! I’m confident that Dabo will keep us in the upper tier.

Thank you for a very honest assessment. Your job is not to please the naive natives, it is to report the facts. Just the facts.

It was an interesting editorial and I don't doubt that it was honest assessment, but it was an OPINION piece, not "just the facts". (Chisum atop the hill, I love baseball, etc.) I hope Americans can still tell the difference between opinion journalism and factual news reporting.

Look, success creates opportunity, and that is what happened at Clemson. Brent Venables and Tony Elliot were rewarded for their work, and I am happy for them. Dabo knows coaches, and Clemson has earned a reputation that will still attract talent. I do expect it might take a couple of years to once again dominate the ACC. Losing coaches, especially Venables is a setback, no doubt. It should be expected that it will take time to climb back to the mountain top, but Dabo climbed that mountain before, and in time, will again. I just hope the fans do not expect to have such losses on the staff and continue as if they were still there next year. Dabo has earned the patience needed to rebuild. Like any worthwhile endeavor, half the fun is in the journey. We have lost coaches and recruits, but Clemson will once again show why this is a great program. Like a field of dreams, Dabo built it, and they will come.

I suppose we are going to find out if Dabo is capable of losing key staff members and bounce back quickly or not. I'm hoping he will.

I’ve been a Tigernet subscriber for many years and IMHO this is the best piece you have ever written.

I’m behind Coach Dabo ??, the Lords going to take care of him and his family. With so much caring and concern for others , there’s no way the Lord want supply for his needs in time of trouble and hardship. This will be another opportunity for the Lord to show the world how he takes care of his children. God bless Coach Dabo and his family as they go through these uncertain times of trouble.
