Stats & Storylines: Georgia Week has arrived

College football is officially back! After an appetizer in “Week 0” with Illinois toppling Nebraska, this Saturday will bring the biggest game of the entire college football regular season. The No. 3 Clemson Tigers and No. 5 Georgia Bulldogs face off in a season opener that will shape the narrative around both teams. Full Story »

Great, fair piece. You have to think that this game is going to hinge on two very basic things: The line of scrimmage and turnovers. Whoever controls the LOS and the team with the fewest turnovers will likely win the game. With two top-notch defenses, this one could be much lower-scoring than anyone expects.

**My thought as well.. 24-17, 24-20 type game. *****

That's usually the deciding factor with 95% of most game being won or lost at the line of scrimage!!!

Great Read Really Comes Down to Unprovens

Aug 29, 2021, 8:49 AM

UGA defense is not proven 2021 Elite, could be pedestrian with Huge NFL losses. Clemson’s defense is returning everything and if it improves as expected, it is the better defense.

Both QBs show great promise but not fully proven. On coaching side Kirbeeeez is unproven, Dabo and team are. UGA running game is proven to be a top group, Clemson’s not proven to be more than pretty good.

Ultimately I think Clemson wins this more than 60% of the time, because Kirbee factor and Clemson D is poised to be top 2 Clemson D ever.

I seem to recall Kendrick contributing to some of the pass defense issues last year. When he played. Remember him getting torched on the deep pass against OSU.

PS. Just watched the highlights again. Boy we were up 14-7 (the beating felt so bad, I forgot we were up and going toe to toe) and it just fell apart. The D was so bad that night.

Tell you what…they keep hyping this game up like crazy……we’re gonna look like fool if we lose this lol….. Id definitely love to the the W, but even a UGA fan knows that the Dawgs may need this one just a tad more than we do…..not because of SOS…..just because they’ve had some issues winning these big stage games….hey man…..we had those issues for a while and the tigers overcame that and won titles along the way…..all hating aside…..UGA is that close…..they get over that hill and can get one on the Tide…..lookout…..especially if the knock the Tide out of the playoffs……just looking at is without my orange glasses on……GO TIGERS!!!!

All good points. I just don't get the hype over uga and their supposed "SOS". Perhaps years past but they have a cakewalk through the east. This year, their schedule is comparable to ours. BC and/or Pitt will most likely be comparable to an arky and albarn. The only team as of now that we don't have a comparable to is Fla and we could easily end up with one in FSU.

Yet, you'll never hear that because of the esecpn media drowning of anything remotely unbiased. Won't play out this way but imo whichever team loses Sat shouldn't doom them from making the playoffs if they go on and run the table. But it will be tough sledding for Clemson to get in if they lose Sat, purely because on media bias and overhyped SOS.

Let's see, Florida is preseason #11 in the Coaches poll and FSU got a big 1 vote plus you have to remember Georgia gets the benefit of playing us. Unless the game Saturday proves different, both teams are elite and the hype is real.

Very well said! +1 Our future is in our hands, and especially in the hands of our OL. Has that been fixed? We'll find out on Saturday. GO TIGERS!!!!!

Good points, but one minor point of difference. I think BC is going to be pretty darn good this year and going forward. That said, ever notice how if a team plays CU close one year the next year's results? a focused Tiger team is a scary sight to behold on the opposing sideline.

Replaceing that many NFL type players is going to be tougher than some may think. 2016 we won the NC, and we lost a some NFL talent to the NFL. 2017 we were OK but had to many close games, and lost to Bama in the playoffs. 2018, we won the NC again, and again lost some good talent to the NFL. 2019, we had a good team, but we lost to an LSU team that was just better than everbody in 2029. Again we lose some good talent to the NFL, and 2020 we had a good team, but we lost to an OSU team that had only played a 6 game season, and they were the freshest team in all of college FB, and out team I believe just over looked them in the NCG. 2021 I believe is our year again, and BV will have our D playing to the BV standard, our offense should be better bc we should have better depth, and I believe that our 2021 Tiger team will go undefeated for the second time in the college playoff history, and UGA is just a bigger bump in the road, but that's it, just a bump, and we'll get past it without any damage to our season record!!!!

I like the way you think! +1 I can just hear the pundits should we handle GA in a workmanlike manner. Let's just hope that on Monday all the news is on "how in the world did Clemson handle GA that way? Wow! The injuries must have taken a bigger toll than expected." Yada, Yada, Yada!

Pretty well written piece

Aug 29, 2021, 11:23 AM

definitely hit the high points for each team in terms of victory. How is Daniels gonna perform facing a experienced and motivated defense that wants to erase the bad taste of last year's Sugar Bowl - and doing so w/ a receiver corps dealing w/ injuries (something that definitely bears watching and will probably be a go-to excuse by the talking heads should UGA lose). Line of scrimmage both ways is gonna be key - can our OL get enough push to move the ball on the ground and keep us from getting too one-dimensional and having to put it all on DJU's shoulders. Can our DL be disruptive enough to get sacks/TFLs and pressure Daniels into some mistakes while also being able to slow Georgia's traditional advantage in running the ball?

The media heads are already starting the talk of writing our boys off as CFP contenders should we lose Saturday even if we win out rest of the year - and we all know how much the disrespect card is a big motivator for our coaching staff & players. But you look and Georgia has had at least one blemish each year in SEC regular season play the past few years they've been in CFP contention, so they really can't afford a loss Saturday both with that knowledge and with a potential SECCG date with Alabama waiting in the wings before the postseason. Really hope our coaches and boys are 100% ready and dialed in.

GO TIGERS! BEAT THE DAWGS!

Thanks for the kind words. Glad you enjoyed it. JT may be the biggest X-factor in college football given all the talent they've recruited around him.

Fair, and a good read.

Aug 29, 2021, 11:50 AM

Not sold on our secondary or ability to run against UGA. I think it depends on what kind of day DJ and our WRs have. You can't really predict turn-overs so it's hard to really try and factor that in although they always matter.

Clemson needs to try and catch an early lead by throwing it deep early and often. I think if we can somehow get UGA into a one-dimensional passing game we can pin our ears back and rattle Daniels.

If we can't establish an early lead and their backs have a field day then things can get tricky on the play action.

Although they lost a lot on defense, their DL is back. UGA was tops in the country in YPC rush defense. Hard to think Clemson will run on them too much, just need some semblance of balance. You're right, a lot will be on DJ and the WRs. I'm excited to watch Ross again. He's fun!

Great job Kantor! In my opinion, such as it is, if DJ plays like he did in his two starts, my money is on the Tigers. He's got targets galore and hopefully we'll see a resurrection of the tight end game. If our defense can keep Georgia's defense on the field we could see that plus sized Bulldog d-line cramping and requiring IV's.

Good analysis, Ryan! I wonder how special teams stack up?

Aug 29, 2021, 3:57 PM

I know nothing about UGA's special teams. Potter & Spiers will need to be money. I keep dreaming of Shipley or somebody hitting a homerun punt/kick return.

Their kicker is really good. Long and accurate. Not sure about the rest of the unit, but Muschamp is their interim coach, so that has got to be good news for us. LOL

Our game with Georgia is huge but a bit premature to proclaim it the biggest regular season game. Time will tell if either the Bama-A&M or Oklahoma-Iowa State games are just as big based on preseason rankings. There always seems to a "biggest" game every year and our game may turn out to be that game by December but it will most definitely be our biggest game.

This is the biggest game until the next biggest game, probably within two or three weeks. The media says, "You've gotta have hype, lots and lots and lots of hype."
