Said this yesterday in a post about missing leadership. Maybe DJ just neeeds someone to step into that role like he had TL last year. It just might not be in his makeup which is ok for now if someone else provides it. But right now there is no one on that side of the ball that you can count on.

I really like this guy. He is going to be a super star. He needs our support, encouragement and gratitude. In the 4th quarter against Pitt when the offense was moping around, he was yelling at people to get lined up and let’s go. He understands the game and will prove to be one of our best if he stays healthy.

I saw that too. Maybe Shipley can be the Sergeant and DJ the Lieutenant?

His comments about natural leaders are spot on. It’s also natural for these people to take a little time and earn respect from the others around them when put into a new situation. His injury probably added a little time to this process but if he feels now if the time for him to assume this role that is great and we need to ride this horse the rest of the season! GO TIGERS!!!

Doesn’t mean he won’t make mistakes and go through some growing pains in year 1 but the older and more experienced he becomes he’ll show off and show just how amazing he is.

This guy is one of em. We may have missed on some of our recruiting but we nailed it with this guy. Ecstatic he’s a Tiger and that he’s approaching this with the attitude he has. This one’s gonna be one of our greats before it’s over.

He is not going to make it as a leader on this team as a running back until he is able to consistently make big plays running and pass catching - that is what running back leaders do! His missed opportunity through the center of the field on that pass last week was the turning point in last week's game and does not bode well as his being a leader on this team YET! Let's see just what this self-identified leader is able to accomplish this week against FSU!

So serious reply....his comments indicate some wisdom mixed

with an expected amount of immaturity on the topic.
The wisdom part is recognizing the need for leadership, recognizing his ability to step into the role, and identifying his own natural traits as a leader.
The immaturity is in blurting these things out loud. Leaders are adopted by their teams organically, based on their actions. Look back at our past teams that had clear leaders.....Wilkins, Lawrence, Watson, Boulware.....willing to bet you won't find one interview where they said "I'm really good at leading....I'm a natural leader....this team needs me to lead so I'll be the leader....etc". They just evolved in the role because they acted like leaders, their teammates respected them, and they were embraced naturally in the role.
When you just say out loud "I'm the leader now", there's going to be a percentage of the team that mentally say "who does this guy think he is?" and rejects it....it makes it harder to be the leader.
I wish him well, and he likely will be a leader on the team before it's all over, but this moment will probably be a learning experience for him.
