TNET: Phil Mafah: Redshirt candidate to breakout candidate

Phil Mafah: Redshirt candidate to breakout candidate

Phil Mafah walked into last Monday’s interview session and had to deal with a smaller than usual media contingent, a cacophony of noise as torrential rain beat down on the roof of the indoor practice facility, and his first look into the TV cameras during his Clemson tenure. Much like he handled his first game action Saturday, he handled it with aplomb and a smile.

I wonder what the staff thinks about Mafah. The better he looks the worse it makes them look for wanting to redshirt him.

The redshirt definitely looked questionable from what I saw the other night. Honestly looked better than Shipley. That being said, the line also played better which obviously makes a big difference.

Someone said they wanted to stagger years, but that really makes no sense. If they are both good they are most likely gone after 3 years. So why waste a year.

Agree to your assessment that the Mafah RS looks questionable. With LJDixon's summer-time issues, in which limited play or outright suspension was apparently considered by the coaching staff, there were only two legit 'full time' D-1 backs to carry the load. Waiting until there was only 1 healthy back remaining was a dubious gamble.

I agree that the line played better and I also liked the play calling better. I also thought that he seemed to have enough speed to make you forget that he is 230 lbs. I know that Dukes and Rencher have worked hard for playing time, but sometimes you just have to defer to talent.

Except when your last name is swinney ,,,believe me i love our coach but sometimes he's just blind when it comes to talent

big time back, with just a bit of OL help. He's got good top end speed and he's a bear to bring down at 230. That spin move looked like Najee Harris.

Don't RS Mafah!

Great attitude....

I loved this young man's attitude in his interview. He's humble and thankful and let's his feet do the talking.

If we can get (keep) these guys healthy, our RB room is going to be tough the next couple of years!!

I was impressed with his speed. Not that what I think matters but the young man looked dang prepared!!

I also was surprised they were going to redshirt him. He had some nice moves and I like a bit heavier running back.

Mafah looked the part of a big time running back. I liked Shipley, too, but Mafah was very impressive. While the OL looked and played better, we’ll see (and hope and pray) that improvement continues. If the blocking holds up, I see us finishing very strong. Still a lot of work to do, but this sparks some hope for what I was afraid was pretty hopeless this year.

He was definitely going to play 4 games. At the start pf the season, the rb room was very deep, then the Lyn-J transfer happened and Shipley got hurt. Things changed dramatically. Dabo had hoped to save Mafah's resshirt and only use him where needed for 4 games. May still donthat who knows? Based on what the coaches seen in practice, something I doubt any of use here saw, determined the pecking order. What they were going to do at the time made sense. Now things have changed, the coaches will adapt and change too. I agree the young man looks like he's really going to take advantage of his opportunity, but the intial decision the coaches made doesn't warrant much scrutiny imo.

With this news, I would love to see Shipley to start working at slot once his ACL has been fixed. A players ACL really gets stressed as a RB, and with Shipley's ability as a RB, and his ability to catch the ball with good hands, I bet that he would make a great slot receiver with his speed. And while they're training Shipley in the slot, throw Will Taylor in there also!!!

Stellato and future recruits will man the slot. There is the VA WR in this class and the kid from FL in the next class. We should land both.

But Balm and I called it.

The kid is a beast. Just like I saw on high school film. He could be a great one
