Can’t leave to leave this second tier basketball conference

Yep, the media already started the hatchet job on...

ACC basketball this past season. Keep telling the average sports fan a narrative and they'll eat it up.

The best thing the other ACC schools can do…

15

May 23, 2023, 7:10 AM

Is let Clemson win all our conference games in football. This will almost ensure we make the playoffs every season, which means more money for everyone concerned. Having a team that never misses the playoffs would also give the ACC more prestige, meaning a better tv contract, again, more money for everyone.

This plan has no flaws.

Right now Clemson is getting half the TV money of an SEC team and its going to get worse. Where are you coming up with more money for everybody? If we win the National Championship Vandy makes more money than us. That's the reality.

Because revenue share, etc simply will not work. Youre not going to find an extra 50 mil per year for Clemson that way. Its over. Please get us out of this league!

It’s “AD speak” that’s careful not to put a stake in the ground that’s currently more like a desert of sand in a windstorm than firm soil in which to plant and grow. Some of the other AD’s came away saying things that will sound silly as the situation changes. Ignore everything except Clemson will focus on what’s in the best interest of Clemson.

This is the part that I hope Neff was the most serious about, and if that's what he meant above all, that would have to mean that he has let the conference heads know that Clemson would bail from the ACC before he would allow Clemson to sink from not having enough money for Clemson sports to compete at the highest level.

Very similar to the replies I'm reading in this thread.

"I'm the AD of Clemson. It is my job to take care of Clemson. Right now, Clemson is in the ACC. So, I have to be careful and professional in any comment I make about the ACC. I will continue to make positive comments about the ACC as long as Clemson is a member of that conference. But, the ACC is not my priority. It is not my job to take care of the ACC. It is my job to take care of Clemson. I understand that. And, I will do my job. When Clemson leaves the ACC...."

Good words, but now let's follow through. It is not in anyone's best interest to hold the ACC down. Though it seemed wise at the time, the binding agreement is hurting everyone, but I want to stay in the ACC. We may play football like an SEC school, but we conduct ourselves like the ACC. Staying in the ACC is the best thing for Clemson if we can get some reasonable changes in the media contract.

I hear those same words all the time, but what I don't hear, is how the SEC and the Big 10 are leaving the other conferences behind with their growth bc that is what they can afford to do. Everything today is measured by wealth, and only two conferences are leading with the biggest bank accounts that will continue to out grow all others, so I ask, is that the rut we want Clemson stuck in until we just can't afford to compete with the out of conference schools that we have usually beat in the past?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have felt like that for most of this time, but

1

May 23, 2023, 10:34 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Neff says Clemson is his priority, but he will be aggressive for the ACC ]

the future of the ACC is a Group of 8 conference that does not have the prestige of the Big or SEC. The money is a huge deal, but the perception of our level is just as big. This realignment into Power 2 is happening for everyone but the ACC because of the GOR. Who knows? The SEC and Big may not even want to expand now, but when they get ready for the next round, and they will, teams like Oregon, Washington, Oklahoma State, will fill spots that ACC teams needed to get themselves to.

What happened to the teams that stayed in the Southern Conference when the SEC was formed?
What happened to the teams that stayed in the Southern Conference when the ACC was formed?
What will happen to the teams that have to stay in the ACC when the Power 2 fills their quotas?

I had hoped the ACC would get Notre Dame in full and maybe add West Virginia also and would be considered a Power 3, with slightly less money. It would have been great to be a big fish in that pond and continue to be a playoff contender from the ACC. It is apparent now that, for many reasons, that is not going to happen.
1. Notre Dame will never join the ACC. They will join the Big if it becomes obvious that they must join a league.
2. The ACC will not get the money necessary to even get close to the Big and SEC.
3. Soon, we may be trying to do this without FSU, as it seems they are ready to jump off the ledge, GOR be ######.

I just hope a situation exists where we have a landing spot. If we don't have that, all of this is rumbling is for nothing. And I hope our administration is doing other than what we see from these athletic director quotes. But again, if we don't have a landing spot, then we ahve to sit down and shut up.

I have been thinking about all of this realignment talk. I sure hope we have a landing spot if it ever takes place. I am genuinely concerned that we might not have a spot unless the two conferences go to 24 instead of 20. And even at 24, it seems tight to me. Please see my thoughts on the selection order below and please convince me that I'm wrong. Hopefully I am way off base, but this is what I gather from everything I have taken in. You can address this on the board publicly, or in a t-mail, when or if you have time, at some point.

Big Ten Preferences
1. Notre Dame: obvious
2. UNC or NC State: Wants one of the schools and presence and in North Carolina
3. UVA or Virginia Tech: Wants one of the schools and presence in Virginia
4. Georgia Tech: AAU and puts BigTen in Atlanta right in heart of SEC country, recruit Georgia
5. Oregon: Needs west coast partners for California schools and pacific time zone
6. Washington: Needs west coast partners for California schools and pacific time zone
7. Florida State: Presence in Florida, recruit the state and a big time program.
8. Miami, Fl.: Recruit South Florida and a big media market there.
9. Clemson: Big time program with lots of ratings and eyes. Helps contiguous to Florida,
although they have contiguous without the state of South Carolina. N.C and Ga. touch.

SEC Preferences
1. UNC or NC State: even though not the same metrics as previous expansions, still want to
be in the state of North Carolina.
2. UVA or Virginia Tech: The SEC wants a presence in Virginia and wants to fill in the void
of these two populated southern states.
3. Florida State: Big program and keep the Big out of the panhandle.
4. Georgia Tech: You would think this would never happen, but the SEC would likely do it to
keep the Big Ten out of Atlanta. (Yankees in Georgia! How did they ever get in?)
5. West Virginia: Another new state(I know not the same metrics as ten years ago, but this
places the SEC right in the Big Ten’s territory.
6. Clemson: Big program with lots of ratings.
7. Colorado: If the SEC must leave the south to get other time zones for money, they will.
Hopefully this move will be after Clemson, but may not be.
8. Utah: See Colorado
9. Arizona State or Arizona: See Colorado and Utah
10. Miami: I don’t really see the SEC wanting them, but maybe they want to keep the Big out
of south Florida.

What everyone is overlooking is whether the ACC is more valuable to the networks than the existing contract. Maybe, maybe not but you are only as good as your year and last year in football and basketball the ACC was not great.

On the one hand he says he's going to what's best for Clemson, and on the other he says he's going to work "aggressively" for the ACC?!? We are screwed.

Re: UGA is signing every top football recruit

May 23, 2023, 2:50 PM [ in reply to UGA is signing every top football recruit ]

Neff should have fined Dabo for losing to the UofSC Coots last year, ending the record home winning streak. That was a Dabo mismanaged game that fell upon his shoulders, but he doesn't seem to want to take credit for. So Dabo needs to stop getting in his own way with regards to play calling and propping up a QB (DJ Uia) who had completely lost his confidence to be a Clemson QB. The Clemson football programs is starting to show signs of cracks. Bad coaching turnover is one facet, with getting coaches like Grisham, Spiller, and even Goodwin not being good moves, but the NIL has just about handcuffed Clemson. Dabo did finally make a good move in getting Garrett Riley. But the NIL makes this an all out bidding war for elite recruits and transfer portal players. No way Clemson can outbid UGA for a recruit being in the ACC. Clemson is at a HUGE ca$h disadvantage even to the UofSC.

Neff wants to help Clemson, he needs to not just support the 'Magnificent Seven', but help facilitate them to eliminate a horrible contract for the teams that really matter, and bring in revenue. If something is not done to help Clemson with the ACC or NIL, Clemson will be struggling to maintain being a Power 5 football program in a few years down the line. At this point I don't know what's worse, being in the meaningless ACC, or falling behind the corrupt NIL system.

a week ago? I've heard this interview. There was nothing to it then and there's nothing to it now. And barely a little more edgy on The Clemson Insider. I'd rather hear more videos of what sources are saying than this seven-day old coach speak.

Re: So this interview was on Satellite radio by Spatola

NCSU and a few other teams are not, and will never be, more desired than CLEM. Its simply CLEM, FSU and UNC. Not sure NCSU even makes it to a super conference but rather the Big12.

We are in priority spot. Even higher than most think when it comes to the B1G....

I listened to the interview as well. Neff did not impress me. He talked hurriedly and in circles with more coach...errr...AD....speak than I've ever heard in my life. He sounded like 25 year-old trying to be an AD-- not a cool, calm, and collected veteran that had a concise point of view.

Exactly how I fell after reading the article. Still no plan in place for Clemson or the ACC. Just a lot of vague talk about revenue sharing. We need to INCREASE revenue, not simply share what little we have differently.

Yeah, politics. Eff that. I'm the AD of Clemson and this conference has become a liability, a death sentence for our football program. It's too late to fix it. ACC football is facing "relegation" to borrow a futbol term and we are getting out. No smiley glad-handing, pretending, playing nice.
