Re: So much for those expectations***

I’m not a BB fan but he did more this year with our team than anyone here expected. Could it have been better. Sure. But dang he finished with 23 wins. We should have been selected to the big dance but got the shaft. Would we have won any games. Who knows. But this season is a success. Because I can guarantee no one thought we would be a 3 seed in the ACC back in October.

Remember when we used to make fun of the Gamecocks and their 5th place rings. Look how many are doing the same thing, being so proud of a 3rd place finish in a conference that is a mere shell of how great it once was. So proud even though we didn't get it the tournament, again.

All because the ACC SUCKS this year. Look at conference NET rankings. ACC is horrid.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So much for those expectations***

Mar 14, 2023, 2:46 PM [ in reply to Re: So much for those expectations*** ]

They play more conference games and this was the worst year for ACC in a long time. When I attended, we won ACC regular season ahead of a great Duke team and many other good teams. The ACC did not have a down year. There's no comparison that team was tons better than this team. Don't get hung up in stats, dig deeper, be better.

I fully support Neff’s decision. Our team got shafted by the
NCAA. Everybody knows it and has been very vocal about the
absurdity of NET alone.

Brad recruits quality young men that represent
Clemson well unlike some other schools.

Brad deserves an extension so he can recruit.

Mar 13, 2023, 6:20 PM [ in reply to So much for those expectations*** ]

I knew that's what he was going to say before a word of it was ever printed. With the ACC up or down, Brad actually had a pretty season, and saying that the ACC was down this year makes no difference with the season he had bc all the rest of the teams had the very same opportunity as Brad had, and Neff would have really looked like the bad guy if he would have fired Brad at the end of this season with the season that he had, and it is just that plain and simple, maybe next year, but this coming season we'll have to ride with mediocre for another season, Go Tigers!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: So much for those expectations***

Mar 14, 2023, 2:58 PM [ in reply to So much for those expectations*** ]

These homers act like we've had 13 glorious seasons under this bozo. They must be football fans, because his tenure has been slightly below mediocrity personified. If he was fired, does anyone in their right mind think any P5 team would be interested? No. Either no team would be interested, or someone like Southwest $STATE$ University. Brad can't coach offense, can't recruit, and can't coach late game tactics. Our men's basketball team has had a higher transfer rate than most schools (prior to NIL). The transfers who talk say either the coaching wouldn't let them fulfill their potential and/or Brad was a mean spirited coach and horrible human. But homers are going to homer, and act like it's someone else's fault Clemson didn't make it. What's Brad's excuse for the other 10 times?

Re: So much for those expectations***

Maybe he should look back to the Tommy Bowden and the how he played Bobby Robinson and TD Phillips to get contract extensions. I call it the "Bowden effect" it's where teams perform to the level of their coaches' job security.

Neff must be easily excitable if he’s truly excited to bring Brad back.

Build back better 2.0 perhaps?

I’m not surprised and with a 14-6 ACC record, beating Duke, Pitt and for crying out loud NCSU 3X, all of whom got in, I get why it’s not a good look to fire Brad this year.

I wish the trigger had been pulled a few years ago though.

Not surprised but also don’t have any realistic expectations that CU basketball will steadily improve.

Re: TNET: Neff makes a decision on Brad Brownell's future

1

Mar 13, 2023, 6:37 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Neff makes a decision on Brad Brownell's future ]

Yeah, I think Clemson basketball fans have just grown used to low standards after years of frustratingly unmet expectations (with the notable exception of that surprisingly overachieving year when we made the Sweet 16). But unfortunately, I think it’s back to cellar dweller status for CU MBB for the foreseeable future. I too wish the plug had been pulled on Brownell years ago; he just doesn’t seem to have that “it” factor to me; seems like a decent guy, but just doesn’t have that fire or swag or confidence. I can’t really place it. So until there is serious buy-in from the admin regarding MBB, until they invest in a big name coach who can recruit some blue chips and McD’s All Americans, the ACC’s Tigers will likely continue to be “just a football school”. Sigh…

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Completely off topic, just curious

about how often you do maths calculations using R.I.C.E. or titration calculations as a chemist? I ask because I was a biology minor undergrad and PsyD grad student. The Elite Level. No UNC BB player wants that on their class (NIT Bad Year)
Clemson has No True Plan much less desire to WIN Basketball Championships!
You would Think with No Pressure...
Who shows up??? Relaxed Clemson Players who have had a Great Season or Brownell who simply cannot Win against Talented teams....
So will a championship....any championship come Now or Never....

Can IPTAY donations be earmarked to specific sports?

Mar 13, 2023, 7:10 PM

If so, I want my funds to go to Football, Baseball, Softball, etc. but not Basketball - as it is obvious Clemson and Neff does not care about our program doing anything other than floundering in mediocrity.

If I cannot, I may be inclined to withhold my donation. (Easier since I don’t get season tickets due to living in Florida.)

What a pushy. Neff needs to go.

Mar 13, 2023, 7:33 PM

Said one thing at the beginning of the year the hoes baco on it when the hard part comes. We need an AD with some actual experience, not one who's just here for the good times and collecting checks the football program's earning

And just think, this is the guy who's going to decide our future football conference alignment as well. Good luck with that if he's not tough enough to fire a BB coach who hasn't moved the needle in 13 years.

Re: TNET: Neff makes a decision on Brad Brownell's future

Mar 13, 2023, 8:41 PM

The one common variable in CBB career has been dropping games to weaker opponents even if we pull off a few good wins and make a postseason tournament. Bowden had some good seasons but help create the term "Clemsoning". Dabo eliminated losing to inferior teams and that has been an integral part of our success.
Could a new basketball coach prevent the letdown loses? Can we create a new culture similar to how Dabo has? Upsets happen but when it's becoming a trend or pattern it's happening too often. I applaud the effort from everyone in the program this season but its time to go in a different direction. Barnes & Purnell were much better coaches in my personal opinion.
CBB coached hard, we had alot of success and I'll be rooting hard for our Tigers in the NIT. GO TIGERS!!!

Our athletic director views us as an NCAA Tournament team

Mar 13, 2023, 9:18 PM

Um, if you don't get selected, then you're not an NCAA Tournament team. I do understand that he is stating that he feels the selection process let this team down and I don't disagree with him there. Any time you see a team with a worse record, lower than you in the standings, and one that you blew out three times, get selected over you, then there is something wrong. Of course, not losing to Louisville, a team with four wins on the season, and Loyola and South Carolina, two 20-loss teams, could have prevented the whole scenario.

I am not a big Brownell fan. I don't think he will ever get us any better than we are now, or when we went to the Sweet 16. His style of basketball puts tremendous pressure on the team, with its lack of scoring offense and long scoring droughts. Based on his product, I think he has already been on the job longer than he deserves. However, I don't think Neff had any other choice than to keep him on. For Neff to fire a coach that just won 23 games and a Clemson record 14 conference games, plus an ACC Tournament win, he would have come under great criticism. I guess he could have shown some real courage and and given Brownell the hook, but I'm not surprised he didn't and can't say I disagree with his decision.

I don't know Brad Brownell but understand he is a nice guy. However, he needs to get some fire in his a** and chew some referee butt when it is needed. I'm afraid though there won't be many in the stands next season. More of the same.

What coach comes to Clemson after Brownell gets fired for the best regular season Clemson has ever had?

The players are likely to be demoralized or hit the Portal.

The guy you get is likely to be the one who has to settle for you rather than the hottest thing going. That's the curse of a history of mediocrity.

That is not overcome by adding unhinged (from an incoming coach's perspective) decision making on top.

Neff said last year that he's ready to drop the ax. This year shows he has the backbone to stand up to the fan base for the next coach.

If Brownell keeps improving, great! He looks like a genius.

If they don't improve, that's still an administration you can sell to the next coach.

If the NIT is the standard then just shut the men’s BB program down , or make it an intramural team . This is so sad, the players, fans and university deserve better than this .

Sounds like a lot of "planning" going on in the AD office.

Mar 13, 2023, 10:02 PM

Especially for the future.

I'm wondering how much "planning" is going on with MBB season ticket holders in reference to renewing their season tickets. It goes both ways AD Neff.

Now don't get me wrong, I was very impressed & proud of this year's team. I kinda wished that I hadn't stopped getting season MBB tickets 5 years ago (call me a fair weather fan if you want), but, it just wasn't a good product to watch. I don't regret cancelling my tickets. I can buy tickets on TigerNet every 4 or 5 years to watch them when they're good.

Long story short, I'll always pull for Clemson, it doesn't matter who is coaching. But for me to "plan" on buying MBB season tickets, I don't see that happening until there're SEVERAL "historic seasons" back to back.

Go Tigers AND stay well Tiger Nation!

I think this is a great decision and appropriate. This team has come together in a fantastic manner and put together a far better season that anticipated, and they should be rewarded. I view Neff's decision as an approval of the team. Let's go forward and win the NIT.

Unless you are a donor, and a fairly major one at that, I seriously doubt that Mr. Neff will be looking to this board for influence and decision making.
Unfortunately, we still seem to be flailing around in mediocrity. The inexplicable loss to Louisville, the continued lack of progression vs UVA and UNC, and, once again, one and done in the tourney, proves to me that we really havent progressed. We took advantage of a conference that was down. I am happy for our team; they did accomplish more than any other, but that just shows how far we have yet to go. Until we have a tourney win, nothing has changed

ACC representatives on selection committee

Someone should demand answers from the ACC on how they allowed committee to rank NCSU, UNC, and Pitt above Clemson.

The committee explains its approach to selecting and ranking teams fairly clearly. Just because we don't agree with it doesn't mean they don't explain it.

Einstein’s definition of insanity gains proof

Mar 14, 2023, 11:04 AM

If you don’t know it, Google it. Neff proved it. Brownell’s supporters proved it. I told everyone all year BB would back the team into the NIT. Based on Brownells performance for a decade too long, the NIT was a hope. Because he rarely could even qualify for that. They made the 338th hardest (meaning the easiest) schedule in the country and lost 10 games. The best is NOT the standard.
