It's obvious what the con is about Clemson

Apr 21, 2019, 8:16 PM

It's just how much he weighs the distance factor.

I live in Texas, I am not impressed with California's size.

I really don't understand why they have to announce at a certain time nowadays. If you don't know where you want to go, why not just wait until you are sure you do and then just commit? I guess they all have to have their moment.

True, but it is a little over 2hr direct flight. It isn't next door though. That 14 hour drive would suck.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

LAX to Eugene is probably not a common direct flight.

Suspect you've got to stop in SFO or PDX.

Pretty sure he would be the starter from day 1 with the ducks.
I think the bigger con for us might be that even though he would probably get a lot of playing time as
a freshman here, he's not gonna start ahead of TL.

It seems to come down to this,

Apr 22, 2019, 9:32 AM [ in reply to It's obvious what the con is about Clemson ]

Does he want to be a little closer to home or "Play for Championships"???
Other than that it sounds fairly even. The chances of a Championship at Oregon right now are Slim and None, and Slim is halfway out the door. That will turn around at sometime, but not enough there at the moment.

“There isn’t anything Clemson could have done differently on my visit there. They did everything right. My family loved it”

Kind of comes off like they did everything right, but my heart is at Oregon. Hope not, probably reading into it. But, if I was listening to him say that, it would give me that feeling.

Didn’t like the feeling I got from that article. Hope this is just a curveball to keep people guessing when he’s actually a Clemson lean. If this is just shooting it straight, sounds like an Oregon lean.

Apr 21, 2019, 9:43 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Nation's No. 1 QB details his recruitment after final visit before decision ]

Can’t see him spending five full days in Clemson if his heart was in Oregon.

I also don’t think he’s the type of kid to choose a school because they let him talk to former players he admires.

I also don’t believe he’s afraid of the QB competition at Clemson.

As has been pointed out previously, Oregon is a LONG way from home for him too.

Re: It comes down to a decision between

Apr 23, 2019, 1:55 PM

Exactly, I live on the west coast and the only championships he’d ever play for at Oregon would be Pac12 titles, which we all know are garbage...he’ll likely win a few of those titles and still not even make it to the CFP. You know they’re selling him hard on coming and turning around the program, but it’ll never be anything close to Clemson, can’t be, the west coast sucks for college football and that’ll never change.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Great for a young man to have such great opportunities...

Apr 21, 2019, 8:34 PM

Understand it will be tough making a decision.

Does anyone know if that Oregon qb coach put his two idols in the nfl or was that a total different regime?

TL’s idol was Peyton manning- that didn’t mean anything. Sure hope he wouldn’t choose based on that.

As for friends, I think we’ve been through that before with Gary didn’t we? Kinda disappointed he said it felt like family. About the same thing he said about Clemson. Honestly, I think it’s a toss up at this point. Hopefully the Oregon high he’s on now will wear off some.

As for distance- I get the opinion that distance isn’t an issue for the family. Except for the time zones.

to be completed.

Keep in mind that he seems to be very religious which Dabo has in spades. Dabo is the only active coach I can think of that promotes religion.

DJ seems to be well mannered and he's not going to ruin a surprise and insult his recent host right off a visit. I'm sure he had a good time at both Clemson and Oregon. If he wants to win Championships he knows where to go.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think he's picking Clemson but wants to wait for an edit

Apr 21, 2019, 9:34 PM

The fact that he says he kind of has an idea of where he wants to be already makes me feel like it’s at least a strong Clemson lean. Maybe just me but hard to think he would say anything like that if it were Oregon because I feel like he’d truly be torn at this moment and need some time

It didnt sound good when he said we couldn't have done anything different. But it also didnt say much about Oregon when he said the highlight was speaking to other polynesian QBs. I agree that he doesn't seem like the type to dis Oregon right after a red carpet treatment. I think the coaches will hit him up tomorrow and he'll remember why hes been a Clemson lean for so long...hopefully. sure he knows more people at Oregon but how many of those people have/had Clemson offers? I think this interview was just a curve ball for us tiger fans and as long as we dont act all butt hurt about it he'll come back around.

I really hope he comes but will not be terribly upset if he doesn't. I have concerns about him coming here and Trevor taking all the snaps and sucking up all the oxygen. We have no idea what his expectations are. There is an excellent chance that the first year he will not play ahead of Chase Brice. What if we win two more titles and Trevor decides to stay his senior year (I have a feeling that money is not what motivates TL). Herbert will be gone after this year, so it looks like DJ could step in there immediately.

off his visit to Oregon and still on the high from meeting two of the QBs he looks up to. I would not expect him to say anything else at this point. He now knows what both schools have to offer and now he has to make that decision on which one is best for him. I’m sure Oregon pitched Trevor starting two more years as a deterrent, but DJ will still make a great QB and baseball player in Tiger Town. Our coaches have done this recruiting thing a time or two before; trust the process.

I'm with tigerpaws here

Apr 21, 2019, 11:40 PM

The high of the visit hasn't worn off yet. Give the man time to kick back and let it all sink in. Clemson has been his leader (implied) for a while. He didn't make several trips, one of those for 5 days with his third cousin thrice removed, grandma and aunt sally, to come kick around at Myrtle Beach.

The highlight of the Oregon visit....meeting a couple guys that played QB for the ducks...wow. His Mama ate fried green tomatoes, hung out with Dabo and watched our Boys get their National Championship rings. He kicked it with The Power Rangers, Hunter Renfrow, saw Justyn Ross, Joe Ngata, and Frank Ladson that will be his future targets. He saw 1st class facilities, a stadium 2nd to none, the best fans in the country that showed up in droves to watch a glorified practice. Tiger Paws painted on the streets and so much orange it outshines the sun.

Oregon has nothing on Clemson. Give the man a few days, he's Clemson bound!

Clemson (pros): coaches, fans, knows his future o-line, knows the talent that will be surrounding him; great chance to be in the playoffs and even win national championships
Clemson (con): not starting until his junior year (and even that is not a given)
Oregon (pros): coaches, fans, knows a lot of players in the team; can start as a sophomore
Oregon (cons): probably not competing for national championships

Will come down to: Does he want to play early, or play with a ton of talent or compete for championships

Possible Deciding Factor (which I have not considered so far): the Dabo factor (everyone wants to play for Dabo)

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not starting until his JR year?

Apr 22, 2019, 9:23 AM

Apr 22, 2019, 2:09 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Nation's No. 1 QB details his recruitment after final visit before decision ]

There's a lot of talk about DJ not playing "early" at CU. Given the Dabo system of "the best player gets the job" (remember KB?), why would DJ have to wait behind anyone? There is no carved-in-stone "Line of Succession" at Clemson. He could even take Trevor's job if he's better.

Go back & watch last year's CU/G-Tech game. KB got the start & played 2 series. Didn't get back in until later in the 3rd, and when he did, he looked totally P.O.'d, upset, confused - he even looked that way BEFORE the game. He knew it was coming, & I think the coaches were 80% sure days or weeks before that game too.

If DJ's better than Brice, Phom, Batson - even as a true freshman - he'll play a lot. If he's better than Trevor - he starts. That's the CU system. Brice gets it (a starter at 9 of 10 other schools). In short, DJ does NOT have to ride the bench for 2 or 3 years. He can, with work & his talent, quickly become the #2 or even the #1. If he doesn't like that & would rather play for a Pac-12 with a lot less chance of winning Natties, then Oregon will be his choice.

I still remember KB saying it was a "slap in the face" losing the starting job. Why? Under Dabo, there ARE no guaranteed jobs - only those the players earn.

Like Bowden said, Dabo can make the hard decisions.

In the event Clemson can pull this guy from a childhood dream team is debatable, but considering how difficult the decision has been for the #1 recruit in the nation proves Clemson's strength is not debatable.

Young DJ is having to make the hard decision. Go with heart or smart? Sometimes following your passion is not necessarily the best decision in the long run.

Re: Okay I have to admit I’m pretty disappointed in him

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Like others said, he's fresh off a trip and to me I wouldn't be surprised if he's just doing that to show some respect and gratitude for Oregon and his trip there. I agree with someone that wrote this before me, but I don't see him being a strong Clemson lean and coming here for 5 days and then just one trip to Oregon changing his mind.

While the negative for him coming here is that he might not play as a starter for a year or two, I think it also works in our favor. He can be coached up and grow under our staff and players here in the meantime. Iron sharpens iron, or whatever the saying is. Plus, think of the supporting staff around him. We're WRU. Look at the O line coming in that would be there for him. Also, didn't Fred Davis hint towards 2 more 5 star players committing? I'm thinking and hoping he's talking about Bresee and DJ.

The past 5 years Clemson has won 2 NC'S, won NC in 2018, and in 2016... In 2014 Clemson finished the season ranked #15 in the AP poll, Oregon finished #2. 2015 Clemson finished AP #2, and Oregon finished #19... In 2016 Clemson finished AP #1 NC, and Oregon failed to finish in the AP top 25... In 2017 Clemson finished AP #4, and Oregon failed again to finish in the AP top 25... In 2018 Clemson won the NC and finished the AP #1, and Oregon again failed to finish in the AP top 25. Clemson kept getting better since 2014, and Oregon just got worse and hasn't been in the AP top 25 since 2015 where they finished at AP #19...

I don't care who Oregon gets at QB, I don't believe they can win a NC in 3 years. It takes more than 3 years to build a NC team, if that team hasn't touched the top 25 in the past 3 years, and Oregon hasn't. If DJ's top priority is winning a NC in his 3 years as College QB, Clemson is his best choice. If a NC don't matter to him maybe Oregon would work out for him, but he won't win a NC there. It took years for Dabo to build a NC team that didn't make the top 25 when he took over. I think that we can all agree that Dabo kept improving the talent each year he has been HC at Clemson!!!

Looking at his recent twitter feed, he is either a strong Oregon lean, or is trying to confuse the fan base and seeks attention - either way, a major turn off as far as I’m concerned.

After all the article says he has an idea where he’s going - so if he’s thinking Clemson, he shouldn’t be posting SO many Oregon tweets without hardly mentioning Clemson - at least recently.

He’s starting to turn me off! Sorry, attach me if you like.

I'm not going to "attack" you, but you are wrong. It would almost be rude if he weren't tweeting some pictures of Oregon during his visit and he and his family aren't rude. He's sharing his experience but there's no gushing. I know he's appreciative of their hospitality and loved meeting his childhood idols.

DJ has always known the distance to Clemson and the depth of our QB room. He ain't scared. His family wants him to play in the sec or acc. I'm betting his family moves with him to SC.

The thought of his family moving to SC has crossed my mind also, but then again, he has a little brother that is doing well with his now HS team. Dabo should offer his brother if he hasn't already.

Pretty sure his brother is in 8th grade

Dabo isn't going to offer any 8th graders even if LSU, Oregon, and USC have, in fact I don't think he's offering any 9th graders. Matayo is good and will eventually get an offer I bet.

I've wondered about Matayo transferring to Grayson. (IMG is Florida?)Isn't that close to Atlanta and there's plenty work around there for Big Dave. Of course their current high school is #2 in the US. You can see I've been trying to work out the details for them :)
