TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 10:00 AM

Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

There was a lot to unpack after Saturday’s 10-3 loss to Georgia in the Duke’s Mayo Classic, and it took a three-hour ride home and two hours in the car on Sunday to really wrap my head around what I saw at Bank of America Stadium. Full Story »

Agreed. Our 1 and 2 need the work on offense. Defense we can run out the 3 and 4 deep early and often.

Save the 4 qtr for the others.

The one thing I kept saying during the game was why were we not using a tight end to help protect DJ.

Sep 6, 2021, 10:19 AM

The number of missed assignments , blocking assignments, and route running was the biggest surprise to me. Dabo can’t play the young team card every year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trying to run 80+ plays on offense was a Chad Morris goal.

Sep 6, 2021, 10:21 AM

Since Elliott took over, we haven’t focused on that.

Georgia was changing out so many players for 3rd down and we

Sep 6, 2021, 11:49 AM

didn't even try to go quickly once Saturday night. Could have had an easy first down. We seem to change out at least one player after EVERY play and give the other team time to change. Need to go!

2024 white level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NOT a Chad Morris goal.

Sep 6, 2021, 12:42 PM [ in reply to Trying to run 80+ plays on offense was a Chad Morris goal. ]

At the time Dabo said it was The Clemson Offense, NOT the Chad.Morris Offense.

I hate that we have abandoned it!

I don’t think Booth is getting enough credit for the job he did. There were several plays where if he didn’t make the play it would have been a big gain. One in particular where he fought through a block and made the tackle.

Can DJU run tempo? Do the coaches remember how?

Sep 6, 2021, 10:27 AM

Really bad game plan and practically no adjustments on the offensive side of the ball.

I remember TLaw turning to the sideline asking us to run tempo and being frustrated by us not doing so.

I think something has been lost in the Chad Morris to co-coordinators to TE transition and TLaw and ETN could cover those flaws, but our current offense cannot.

Based on his three starts, it does not look like DJU can be a running threat or is coached to know when to take the runs that are available. But we also don't see jet sweeps and rarely use our speed to hit the corners other than a pass or a dangerous toss to the RB.

Personnel wise, we may not be able to do much about what we have right now. Coaching wise, there is much more we can do.

Agree with all points except the happy talk about the oline.

Sep 6, 2021, 10:47 AM

I hesitated to respond, because everyone has said this same thing ad nauseam, is nothing you don't know. I'm just saying that this has been an issue long enough to say that they'll be good when they play good, position changes notwithstanding. The rest of this schedule may not be a great measuring stick.

Tight Ends were involved and we had a drop that would have

Sep 6, 2021, 10:48 AM

been 1st down at Georgia 39 with 6 minutes to go to tie the game. And Galloway is one of my favorite players so not trying to put him down. Drops happen and this one the ball was slapped by the defender at just the perfect time. Point is, the tight endes were involved. I liked the play overall of Allen and Galloway.

Up tempo in that game would have resulted in us getting beat 27-3 instead 10-3. You can't do up tempo if your offense if flat producing nothing and not keeping the ball at all. The defense even as great as ours, would get worn out.

I'd like to know why our receivers can't ever get open. I know when the pass rush is this strong, there is very little time to get open, but this dates back to last year. Looking to Grisham on this.

I know that Dixon was suspende for first half, but why on earth did it take so long to get him in the game in the second half. Looking at you Spiller and Elliot.

Re: Tight Ends were involved and we had a drop that would have

Sep 6, 2021, 12:09 PM

Here what you saying and agree with most it, but, we knew about the big guy on the UGG-A defense that was creating havoc by ripping through our offensive line, and he was unstoppable. Our coaches knowing the type of player he was, I'm still wondering why there wasn't a plan to get DJ out to the right side away from that rush with our best blocking TE on the move prepared to pick up the first blitzer coming in on DJ's right side that would have gave him that few seconds he need to find an open man across the middle of the field with our fastest WR blazing down one or both the side lines. to create some space quick to avoid the rush. About the entire game DJ never goy out of the pocket. If coaches plan to keep DJ in the pocket, somebody better start working with him and his release, bc it just takes him to long to get the ball out of his hands, and that alone was causing his passes to get touched or batted down!!!!!

Another question is after Dixon came in the game and picked up 10 yards on his first carry why did he not get any more carry’s after that. He had the best run of the night and we don’t go to him anymore???

Agree completely on playing the two deep. No disrespect to

Sep 6, 2021, 10:51 AM

our other players or South CArolina State, but our offense needs work. MAybe just the two deep on offense. They need work and going our there and playing one or two quarters will not help. Of course, when you do that you take a risk of unnecessary injuries. The coaches will say they can get better in practice so I doubt they will keep them in. Mostly due to the injury factor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Agree completely on playing the two deep. No disrespect to

Sep 6, 2021, 12:15 PM

The only way to fix some of our offenses problems is to scrimmage at full speed bc, situational scrimmage practice isn't near like live game action, and sure enough they will look good in practice with situational scrimmages!!! Like Nikki said, play the 1st-2nd team 3 plus quarters, or practice at full game like speed!!!

I am afraid if the team scrimmages full speed, the Offense will seriously get no yardage and will get hurt for the season physically and emotionally.

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 10:56 AM

Send Tony Elliott to Alaska. He uses no diversity in play calling. First down every time- half back up the middle. Seldom use of tight ends. Same old worn out plays that all our opponents know now and even I can mostly guess what's coming. No wonder our opponents can play defense so good. Of course, this year the offensive line couldn't block a group of 85 year old women. It was common knowledge in team practice that when the first team off. line played against the first team def. line, the off.line didn't know what/how to do..So, Robbie Caldwell and his coaches made a bunch of bad recruiting choices or they haven't done a good job of coaching.

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 11:22 AM

This ???? The problem is not the talent. There’s plenty. It’s the play calling. No jet sweep, no reverse. Just not a single wrinkle to get them off balance or gain some momentum.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 12:21 PM

This isn't the first time the vanilla play calling has been talked about, and it won't be the last until Dabo puts his foot down about mixing things up to stop elite defenses from dialing in on what our intentions are on offense!!! Every game, it has been easy to figure Tony's play calling out, and what he will do in about every situation!!!!

I was disappointed not having any TE/WR/or RB screens. I figure that may have worked a time or two with how much pressure they were getting.

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 1:17 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling ]

I believe Dabo is way more involved in the play calling than we are aware. He basically slid into Scott’s on field position. Some of the comments Elliot made seemed to suggest he was overridden multiple times.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If that’s the case, then Dabo needs to learn how to call plays a lot better.

Sep 6, 2021, 2:26 PM

Or, better yet, trust the coaches he hired more. We shouldn’t be paying Elliott so much if he can’t truly be the OC.

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 11:17 AM

You miss the obvious. Up tempo? With who running it? Our QB is clearly a pocket passer with limited mobility, and Georgia seized on that. We need a different offense, but a faster offense is out of range.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Booth, Mukuba, and Bentley have that it factor…

Sep 6, 2021, 11:27 AM

I want to see more of that combination on the field together. On offense, it’s clear that we need Lyn-J Dixon to start at RB (and stay out of the love shack). He was the only RB who showed some vision and his blitz pickup ability is a must have for DJU to feel comfortable.

UGA’s offense wasn’t great, creative, up-tempo, whatever either

Sep 6, 2021, 11:28 AM

And their QB was a highly recruited player from a big HS program in California.

We had 180 yards, they had 250 yards.

The difference was a pick six.

That UGA team is one of the top 4 in the country. We played them, they were better, we lost.

I would not bet against us if we played them again.

The sky IS NOT falling - relax Tiger faithful, we got this!

^^^^ This is what I like to see and hear!^^^^
We don’t know for sure yet but I’m guessing time will show that we played one of if not the best defense in the country Saturday night. All this pointing at the coaches is ridiculous. It’s one game. I had GA fans walking out of the stadium Saturday night saying we’ll see you in Miami. They have more faith in our team/coaches than most of the people posting here. This program was built on integrity and if LJD was suspended for a half, how soon he played in the second half might have been determined by how he reacted to the initial discipline. I for one am glad we aren’t like Bama or GA make the discipline dependent on the opponent. I trust Dabo and his staff. We’ll be ok. Go Tigers!!!

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 11:49 AM

Agreed that the offense looked different in the 4th quarter. They looked a lot more confident after Lyn J entered the game. They had swagger. Swagger. The Georgia offense looked normal on that first major drive. The only reason that drive ended with a field goal instead of a touchdown is because we hadn’t built that continuity on offense with Lyn J up until that point. Time was needed.

My question to any coach. Yes, this program is about molding individuals and teaching young men that life is more than football. But, this is a HUGE game. Start Lyn J on the first series of the second half, be transparent that he wasn’t going to start, and don’t sacrifice the physical and mental health of the team for individual discipline. It’s not fair to those players. Clemson may be in the top 5 and looking in simply because a decision to start Lyn J in the fourth quarter. This decision may come back to haunt you. At the beginning of the 3rd quarter it was still a 7 point game.

I agree with everything Nikki said except the up tempo part. It seems defenses have this thing figured out these days. But we are still going to have a good year and PROBABLY and hopefully make the playoffs.

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 12:23 PM

I dunno, I mean, Miami was running the hurry-up & had pretty good success against Alabama; not competitive-looking, but their scores came on hurry-up plays & I don't think it's wrong to suggest it might have been a huge advantage for us Saturday to even attempt.

We've done it plenty before, after all, & it feels like it was worth a shot.

I will agree that the sky is not falling but it is hurricane season and right now we are not in the calm of the storm, ,I E the committee is going to be looking at us through the "eye" of that storm.

Tight ends?

Sep 6, 2021, 12:21 PM

She asks about why Clemson didn't use the tight ends more, but left out Braden Galloway, our super-senior who at least had two first-down conversions & zero drops?

Using the TE's isn't the outlier at all; it's the o-line, & it's a fixable problem (eventually).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 12:40 PM

Thanks for the defensive insights -- and kudos to coaches for starting Mukuba and Phillips. And to the defensive players and coaches for being studs all game long.

You were too kind to the offense and gracious when you stated DJ was "maybe" over his head versus the UGA defense. He had never played a better defense in live action, and he was confused and rattled big-time. That said, I agree with you that DJ will grow and adapt quickly -- he is smart and his family is first class. We are fortunate to have him at Clemson. Coach E and Coach S unfortunately wasted the summer and did not have DJ ready for the game. They all share responsibility for DJ's rough first half.

The future does remain bright, but I hope to see Clemson coaches build more O-line strength by building an "Orange" and "White" o-line platoons and rotating them in and out on different series throughout SC State and ACC season. Go Tigers!

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 1:40 PM

Agree. Get Tristan and Dietrick in there and let them play most of the first team snaps... Not just a vanilla run out the clock 4th qtr. Trial by fire. Let them make mistakes and learn from it.

I think it'd help DJ as well because he'd have to learn how to handle the pressure.

Wonder why there was no mention of any WRs not getting open except for Ngata. Also why do these WR/TE not try to catch the ball away from there bodies instead of letting it get in on them? Hopefully the o-line uses this as a huge learning experience and DJ sees he’ll need to take what the D gives him then tuck the ball and run.

I really hope you’re right and Dabo leaves the O in this week. Sit the D cause we can see what they can do and don’t need any silly injuries.

It’s Monday so time to turn the page and get ready for SC State.

Re: TNET: Monday Morning Quarterback: The sky is not falling

Sep 6, 2021, 2:36 PM

I agree completely, the sky is not falling and we can win out and if we do we will be fine- don't listen to the folks looking for ratings trying to get into the playoff chatter at this point. It will take care of itself and if we deserve to be there we will be - if we lose we won't deserve it and we won't be there with 2 losses. It was simply a bad year to open with a team like that with the new skill players we have, new QB, new RB's, essentially a new "Ross" after missing a year, etc. BUT sorry to say it was the same old OL and same old play calling yet again by Elliott. Every one of those need to improve and I'm sure it will - especially with the return to the normal schedule.
I would disagree a bit on not missing Davis and Turner - yes the reserves played well but the extra depth perhaps could have enables to get them off the field and get one final chance in the end. Certainly adding Davis would have allowed some more rotation in the middle. We need him on the field and we have struggled to keep him there basically his whole career.

Play calling is vanilla. No adjustments. Seemingly did not have contingency plan to counter what they were doing on D. They were constantly getting pressure or at least holding the line at the point of attack. Their LB's have blazing speed and with us not being able to control the LOS with 5 on 3, Their LB's were free to fly to the ball. Their safeties could lay out a blanket, open the cooler, make a fried bologna samich with the setting sun doing the frying. There was no fear whatsoever of anything going downfield or ripping off a run that made it to the 2nd level, let alone the 3rd.

We need that Renfrow, Amari, Artavis guy in the slot. If nothing is working, do what others do......run slants till the stop it make them pull their safeties up and go 9ver the top. The LB's have to stay put. The guy to do this with is Will Shipely. Sure handed, speed, shifty, mature and disciplined.

I think times like these show the weakness of a spread. Shotgun, single back and a H-back off the tackles hip. Throw some wrinkles. Under center in the I with a monster at FB, like maybe Capehart, Xavier Thomas, or Bresee. How about some traditional under center play action? You have to make the linebackers respect the run. They were free to drop 7 or 8 at will and still get pressure or hold the point of attack like a Grady Jarrett.

If we're are not able to block everyone...block some. Isolate the play side and make the back side irrelevant. Every one of their DLinemen was 7'4 and 450 lbs, with Go-Go Gadget arms, and Carl Lewis speed. So, rollout by design.

Where did the window dressing go? Why do we refuse to make the TE a part of the offense. If your just going to use them to block, just put another true OL out there.

The OL line problems are coaching and talent. We need new blood coaching the OL. Dabo needs to seek the best line coach in the country and offer him twice what he's making now. The talent shortfall is proven by our lack of sending players to the league. Get the top recruits to come. Use the NIL. Recruiting draw....hey 5 star #1 OT in the nation do you know what deals our starting OL have? The starting LT has contracts with this and that for 200k. This is probably illegal but you better believe that everyone in the top 50 programs in the country is going to do.

I don't think the team is going to implode. I don't see that happening with a Dabo coached team. But we've seen it before. Early season huge emotional, game that you've been preparing for this game, and lose. 1992 Floridq St. Night game in the Valley. #15 Clemson v. #3 FSU., Their first year in the ACC. We come out punch them in the mouth only to watch Charlie Ward transform right before our eyes, from "this dude sucks and has thrown 3 picks" to "Holy Crap, he's gonna win the heisman. That team was insanely loaded on Defense. That game destroyed that team. We went on to a 5-6 record. We should have been in contention for the NC but they layed down.

No. This program under Dabo has usually been better at the end of the season than the beginning. We could very well see UGA again if some things shake out. I have no doubt, this team will pick themselves up and get better. All is not lost and every goal for the season is still a possibility.

Sorry so long but I needed to vent.
