I love Skalski and everything he's done for the program. Great guy, has tons of heart. But, his lack of speed will keep him out. The NFL loves speed at the LB position nowadays.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hope he makes it but he gets injured ...

Feb 10, 2022, 11:03 AM

... an awful lot.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He also plays at a whole lot higher level of intensity

Feb 10, 2022, 11:36 AM

than most of the other players. A bit reckless at times, but he will have to rein it in a little bit. The prototype Special Teams guy early in his NFL bid.

He has to play with that intensity to make up for a lack of natural athletic ability

Boulware made the practice squad for with the Panthers for a bit.

Skalski:
- can turn his hips much faster.
- has just as good of an IQ, if not better
- Is quicker in first 5 steps
- has a slightly faster top end speed than Ben.

I think he gets a good look.

Yes he didn’t make it and Panther defense sucked. James can make it in the NFL Jacksonville needs him with any team expect for Saints. If Saints he’d be tossed for half the season since he was always tossed in Sugar Bowl.

He was released from the practice squad before the first game of the season was played. He was also on the 49ers practice squad for the next 7 days before being released. So that puts his career NFL earnings at ~$14,000.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesn't change my point.

Feb 10, 2022, 3:32 PM

97% of college players never make it as far as Ben did.

If Ben can at least get a couple shots at staying on a practice squad, even if it was just 2 weeks, Skalski has the potential to go further.

I can almost guarantee his net was $0 or negative for all the training he paid for to prepare for the NFL after Clemson

Yeah, but that's $14,000 more than any of us made in the NFL. Boulware was kind of dirty, but fun to watch still.

Skalski has been one of my favorite players for a while.

I love that guy. Grinder, heart and soul of the D, leader, etc. But he is not fast enough to play LB in the League. No offense, but he would be an OC's dream for a MM in pass coverage at the next level. Middle backers in the League look like Bobby Wagner, Roquan Smith, Fred Warner, Eric Kendricks, etc. Or for some old school Clemson guys - Capt. Kirk and Anthony Simmons. Great news is that I think he'll make a great coach if he so chooses to enter that line of work.

I've been wrong more times than I can remember about predicting that a superb college player would not make it in the NFL because he had something of an underwhelming sort of measurable attribute.

Then the player goes onto to have a successful NFL career.

I'm not so dumb this time to bet against Skalski making a NFL roster ... or whether he makes one for 2022 or 2023.

Like Tedy Bruschi who was too small and everything else the NFL doesn't like. Yet, he was a starter on SB teams.

He will never make the NFL as a LB, maybe switch to a long snapper?

It will take a DC with a clue to give him the chance. They could move him around with the linebackers. The only negative is that he from Clemson. He would be shoe in play if from Alabama. But Clemson is slowly getting respect of NFL

You never know if he can make it. Vontaze Burfict ran a 5.0 40ydd.

I BELIEVE ...

Feb 10, 2022, 10:46 AM

... but more importantly, HE believes.

We just had a player (Renfrow) that started as a walk-on catch the most passes in the latest Pro-Bowl, and who is vastly underpaid (right now) for his production. He believed in himself too.

Sure, Skalski has a lot of work to do ... but if he can convince ONE team to give him a chance, that foot in the door might be enough to kickstart his dream.

I won't bet against him...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This young man

Feb 10, 2022, 12:19 PM

Will have a chance to excel at the next level and I will be very surprised if he doesn’t become another “Renfro”.

I sure wish my team had another Skalski waiting in the wings. He will be missed.

Good lord. If I had a nickel for every time a poster on here proclaimed that a low-rated recruit or undervalued player was going to potentially replicate Renfrow's success I'd be a rich man.

His intelligence, strength and toughness are there but I don't think he can run fast enough to be an NFL backer. Hope he can make a roster.

Re: TNET: James Skalski has no doubt he can play in the NFL

Feb 10, 2022, 1:38 PM

I love his desire and attitude but agree with most of you - the current speed needed at LB may limit his success. He may be a decade or so too late for what he can do! I wish him well and I'm sure he has and is working on his speed to improve pass coverage.

"career ended prematurely"

Feb 10, 2022, 1:39 PM

Can you really say that for a guy that played 6 years in college in over 65 career games? The guy is in his mid-20s already!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Slim and None

Feb 10, 2022, 6:13 PM

Are his chances of making it in the NFL. He's actually quite similar to the All American that was not drafted although I do believe he is a step faster than BB (so a 4.8 forty). He played Mike at Clemson but is about 3-4 inches too short and not physical enough to play middle linebacker in the NFL. Just a glance at the size of the inside linebackers in the NFL should be a clue. So if he's too small to get off block and be a run stopper, then he would need to be a 4.5 cover guy. He's not an NFL cover guy. Wish him the best but when no team is interested in drafting him that should be a clue.
