youth? technical standpoint? Is making the effort to block someone really that difficult? I've watched replays of one I wont name just stand there twice on plays with no attempt to hit anyone.

Changes to the coaching staff would be welcomed. Caldwell has no leg to stand on to keep his job. Dabo must really like him as a person, but the development of linemen over his tenure is average at best. WWNSD (what would Nick Saban do?).

Also, it's painful to watch teams like Ohio State's receivers running wild all over the field into open areas created by the design of the play. Their QB's all look good because they are playing more "pitch & catch". Why have athletes at receiver if they are just used to be bigger than DB's? Wouldn't they be better at safety instead? At least they could run around, find open areas, and make plays!

So if the D is crowding the Screen, why not runs some fakes. That is still legal isn't it? No one seems to do that kind of thing any more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well that's what happens when you go for 6'3 or taller ONLY

Nov 2, 2021, 8:35 AM

We need to MAYBE grab one of those a recruiting cycle & start looks at 5'8 - 6'1 guys mainly. That is the new WR prototype. This past draft 13 of the 15 WRs in the 1st 3 rounds were under 6'1 and all ranged around 5'10.5. No WR bigger than 6'1 was taken until the last WR pick of day 2 & he was 6'2, you won't find a 6'2+ WR taken until late day 3. They just aren't what NFL teams are looking so much for anymore. Even Bama hasn't had a 6'2 or bigger WR in years. Yet that's all Dabo goes for. Dabo has to start evolving, we have to get faster and smaller in the WR room and start blowing top off of defenses like we did with Sammy

Trying to fit a square peg in a round hole seems to be our offensively philosophy this season. "Well it worked in the past so we are going to keep doing it despite overwhelming evidence it isn't working this season" isn't exactly the kind of coaching you should be paying top dollar for. Then again we appear to lack the ability to throw the ball more than a few yards down the field with any degree of accuracy so that may limit our coaches options.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, I don’t understand that plan to force something we

Nov 2, 2021, 10:29 PM

Don’t have the right personnel for. Do something different. Also pretty telling that he’s having to draw the defense away from our OL.

I appreciate this interview and hearing what he’s thinking.

I despise that play. I’m amazed that we average gaining any yardage. I would have thought it averaged loss yards. The guys on the perimeter with the receiver never seem to be able to block the defensive players. Unlike when other schools run the same play for plus yards. But this is sn interesting insight as to what the coaches see and are trying to accomplish. Thank you for that. Go Tigers.

I wonder if this includes any yardage vs sc state. It really seems like most of the screen plays go for negative or no yards

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree, I’m amazed at the 4 yard avg statement

Nov 2, 2021, 10:32 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Inside Clemson's Screen Game: From body type to injuries, the numbers are down ]

I would have bet that those screens were losses.

Another big factor T.E. didn't mention is the fact no one respects our deep game. DJ is so inaccurate on long throws that defenses can crowd the line for both the screen and our run game. T.E. has completely abandoned the vertical passing game and it is showing in the pathetic stats the offense generates.

No, the defensive backs we play are faster than our receivers.

He did say that - when he was talking about teams playing 15 yards off Sammy.

Depending on the type of screen, the key part is having lineman that are quick enough to get out and make blocks. Do we really have those linemen?

I have taken two things away from TE interview…

Nov 2, 2021, 9:58 AM

1. Yesterday in speaking about DJ’s interception and WR not fighting for ball. The throw was designed because our 5 star QB apparently can’t read safeties. This is alarming on many different levels. Tells me that DJ has either a low football IQ or Streeter/Elliot can’t coach him to read defenses. I imagine it’s a combination of the two. Problem is that particular throw covered 30yds+ in the air and DJ stared down the WR. Easley HS safties would have broke on that. If we have dumbed down the offense so much, then we can’t make throws like that.

2. Regarding the screen game. I hear TE saying we don’t have the type of WR to execute it properly. Then why the F$Ck are we running it? Adjust the game plan to the personnel. If it’s an extension of run game, run a freaking old fashion sweep to the outside. Hell it can’t do worse and I don’t have to worry about another pick 6

Just my takeaways from interview. I see some stubbornness setting in and that scares me. Never ends well.

Re: I have taken two things away from TE interview…

Nov 2, 2021, 11:19 AM

When they sent Dixon wide on a sweep he’d dance around and lose 5yds. Then amazingly they would run that play with Mafah and get great results. We need more of Mafah. How about that be the run game, and start sending the slot receiver and TE’s into the middle or I don’t know a crossing pattern? Certainly DJ can throw a 15 yard pass across the middle with decent accuracy, right?

Re: I have taken two things away from TE interview…

Nov 2, 2021, 11:38 AM [ in reply to I have taken two things away from TE interview… ]

I noticed that also. If we have a QB we have to tell where to throw the ball before the snap, regardless of what the defense does, then we are doomed to failure. You can't run an offense like that but thats what TE said was the case for that (and presumably other) play. No bueno.

Great coaches adapt their system to the players they have available. Our coaches Are going balls to the Wall with our system, no matter who the players are. Bear Bryan use to have a saying: "I'll take mine and beat his'n. I'll take his'n and beat mine". What the Bear was saying is that winning football is about adapting to the players available and coaching them to be better at what they can do, not trying to make players fit into YOUR system.

Re: TNET: Inside Clemson's Screen Game: From body type to injuries, the numbers are down

Nov 2, 2021, 11:21 AM

The WR screen has been scary a few times this year. I think TE hit on it when he said teams aren’t playing off our receivers like they did with Sammy. This is why they are able to break on the screen so quickly- they are closer to start with. We did execute the play very well one time in the first quarter against FSU and Ross gained about 12 yards. So if the next 3 are blown up at the line of scrimmage the average is 3 yards per screen pass. Still not good because that play is usually run on first down so we start 3 drives with no gain on first down. Averages can be really difficult to base decisions on because the average is hardly ever the result of any individual play. In other words if the average gain on screens is 3 yards, I’ll bet we didn’t run any single screen pass that netted 3 yards. I would be looking at the yards per screen play and how many gained more than 3-4 yards and how many did not if that was my benchmark.

Agree, The game has evolved…

Nov 2, 2021, 11:34 AM

past these 6’5” jump ball WRs and we didn’t adjust our recruiting. Look at the WRs who have dominated college football the past few years, they are all 6’1” and under: Ja’Marr Chase, Justin Jefferson, Chris Olave, Devonta Smith, Henry Ruggs, Jerry Jeudy, etc…

Re: Agree, The game has evolved…

Having a jump ball guy on the field is great, but when the entire receiving corp is made up almost exclusively of jump ball guys you need to reevaluate you recruiting. Especially when you go game after game without throwing up even a single deep ball.

So, Elliott repeatedly acknowledges that we do not have the right personnel right now to have a successful screen game. Then goes out and calls ten screen passes. Got it.

Re: TNET: Inside Clemson's Screen Game: From body type to injuries, the numbers are down

Nov 2, 2021, 6:24 PM

The age old Clemson screen bubble screen is been ineffective this year, and the main reason is how long it takes for DJ to get the ball out. That play requires the ball to get to the receiver fast, or the DB's will have time to get it covered up. DJ looks like he's moving in slow motion on these, so it has resulted in tackles for loss more often this season.

Re: TNET: Inside Clemson's Screen Game: From body type to injuries, the numbers are down

Nov 2, 2021, 9:55 PM

Same problem Kelly Bryant had. TL threw quick bullets and it made a huge difference.
But it’s more than DJ - we don’t have the right skill set catching the screen, and we don’t have good blocking WRs.

Re: TNET: Inside Clemson's Screen Game: From body type to injuries, the numbers are down

Nov 2, 2021, 10:17 PM

I have been asking my self those same questions all season long. Yet why do they still insisting on throwing these screens when they don't have the numbers or the right personnel to run it? Defenses know it is coming, they have the numbers a lot of the time, yet we still run the play and many times for a loss. It's poor play calling and not putting the talent you have in the best possible situation or match up. very frustrating.
