As much as I'd like to try and find the positives I can't. Love it for the players but would much rather each player get more stiphen or something that could be controlled. This cannot be controlled and it's going to become the wild wild west. Recruiting will last the entire time in college. All said school has to do is say transfer here, we have you a nil contract for, name your price.

College sports have officially become extinct as we knew it. What's next, tatoo's, helmet stickers, Jersey patches advertising...

Unfortunately this will have dire consequences for the fans because players like DJ might sign a big deal in July 22 worth 500k plus if he goes out and wins the Heisman and Championship and if the company that paid him doesn’t put “you can’t sit out clause” he could do exactly that and wait on the draft without any consequences. Then it will come up why can’t football move to one and done

There were probably a message or two hanging from a bridge on his way back to cootlumbia with some choice words telling him that he wasn't welcome in cootlumbia any longer!!!!

I think it might actually be good for college football. The players mostly live in their own world anyway. The vast majority of them aren't going to make a ton of money off of this and the ones that do were going to get drafted anyway.

It might actually help keep some in college for an extra year.

The very top guys will be making enough in NIL that they won't have to leave because of financial constraints at home. They would still be crazy to stay but, if they're having a great time, they don't have to go.

I suspect the biggest boost will come in the guys that are rated mid to late rounds though. Some of them are going to be beloved college players that may be making enough in NIL that they would be crazy to leave the money on the table and not bet on themselves to have a huge year and vault themselves into a higher round.

If anything, this may cut down on the shabbiness by bringing the money out in the open. There is no reason to deal with a bagman if the suits can just send you a check for an honest business deal.

It will still happen but it doesn't need to, particularly where we're winning at the highest level, always I'm the hunt, coach them up better than anyone and have a national brand.

... AND we have Dabo. He was not onboard; but, who do you trust more to figure out how to make it work? It isn't going to make him coach anybody less or love any of them less. He's been recruiting kids with character for years and this is yet another way for it to work to our advantage.

I couldn't tell if it was a troll job for McMaster to come sign the bill here after what Coach Swinney's stance has been on name/image/likeness stuff.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it'd be a PR disaster anyhow...

It's all going to come down to compliance

Jun 15, 2021, 2:06 PM

If everything is about compliance, I have no doubt Clemson will be better prepared than most, especially since we have an extra year to prepare here in SC before the law goes into place; the NCAA rules may very well come into play before that time (as McMaster suggested yesterday) but I bet we create an entire department or sub-department within compliance for the NIL stuff.

It's already cost us a potential recruit. Southern Cal already pulled this stunt.

The vast majority of schools will not have a single player make any significant money. If any money at all. Only the top 20 schools, really the top 10 that have maybe a few athletes that are household names are going to make money. Trevor Lawrence would’ve been the only player at Clemson to make significant money or Deshaun Watson. A few other guys will make a little bit of money, but not the big money that you hear people talking about. That will only be for guys that are national household names. Guys that will be first or possibly second round draft picks.

I get so tired of hearing these guys don’t get anything. Compare kids today with the facilities the training the food the stipend etc. that they get which is infinitely more than kids in the 80s and 90s got and those kids got way more than the generation before them.

Roughly 2% of college football players make it to the NFL and the average NFL career is five years. The most important thing these kids are getting is a free college education!

NIL and other things being contemplated is not only going to ruin college football but all college athletics! It’s going to screw the very people the liberal mouthpieces say are being exploited and that they want to help!

I also get tired of hearing these kids don’t have money for laundry or to take their girlfriend out to dinner. Have you seen these kids today? They are covered in tattoos. Tattoos are expensive! And I won’t even mention some of the other things these players spend a lot of money on because I’ll get labeled a racist for telling the truth. But these kids have money! They are already getting well compensated and given cash!

you would only be racist if your assertion is that ONLY the black players are getting cash and spending it on things you assume that they or their family can't afford. Speak on how much money white players are getting or things they are spending money on that you assume they can't afford so that you are talking about all football players and not just the black ball players...

That’s not even remotely what I was thinking or talking about. But I’m not going to elaborate because some people on here would flip out despite the fact that it’s very true and accurate. But needless to say even kids that people think don’t have money do you have money from somewhere because of the tattoos and other things that are expensive.

why do you think that someone would think that you're being racist because you think that tattoos are expensive, maybe too expensive for a college student to pay for? do white players not get tattoos? is there something specific about black ball players having things that you assume they can't afford that you won't elaborate on? I am seriously confused as to why you think you would be called racist if your thoughts are not racist because you would be speaking of all ball players and not just black ball players; or is your unspoken comment only about black ball players?

I actually think that those who benefit the most...

Jun 15, 2021, 3:16 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Governor McMaster says Clemson ]

will be the top names at colleges who care about college sports and the college name is marketable. Like with anything else, people will pay money for products they like and advertisers take note of brands/people/situations, etc. to exploit or profit from. On a national scale, guys like Lawrence and other Heisman contenders can make big money but you'll also see guys at lesser schools do very well from it.

I live in Kentucky, where the Wildcats are the main brand and college sports is as big here as it is in other southern states. While UK isn't great at football, the brand is trending up and people love to see them do well and get behind them when times are good. Just in the past few years, guys like Josh Allen, Kash Daniel, Benny Snell and homegrown KY kids would have made bank with endorsement deals, appearances, autograph signings, etc. And just as much as you'd see any non-Heisman kid make at other top football schools. Instead of seeing the head coach on the local Ford dealers billboard, it'll be the head coach and one of the star players.

it'll be really interesting to see how absurd it gets and if it costs you recruits...which we know it will. Imagine a kid like Tee Higgins...with NIL, UT could have sold him on staying home, being a known brand from day one and guaranteeing a bunch of money his way as a result...go to Clemson with little name recognition across the state from day one) and forgo that guaranteed money for you and mama. Its definitely gonna happen.

Even schools like Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Georgia, etc. Will only have a few players making any real money. You can count on one hand the players at Clemson right now that might make more than 10 or 20k. A handful of kids are going to make a bunch of money, but the overwhelming majority will make nothing. The only way the average kid will make any money is when
rich alumni that own businesses use this as a way to pay players. This is going to get abused and teams that have rich alumni will pay players by way of an NIL to go to their school. For example, a really rich booster that owns a car dealership will put up a billboard with a bunch of players and pay them $25,000 each. It’s just a legit way for schools to cheat!

I completely agree....its going to get out of hand at some

Jun 15, 2021, 4:25 PM

of the top schools...certainly so in the SEC where alumni bases are more of a win at all costs mentality. From what I understand schools cannot have any hand in it, but we all know there will be a middleman somewhere. Just like the transfer portal, it started with good intentions and its become corrupt as all get out...lots of collusion and absolutely no oversight or enforcement. And quite frankly, its impossible for the NCAA to police any of this as they simply do not (or wont) have the the manpower to do so.

Don't worry. The Florida State Criminals will have some #### star or Mid East Oil Prince buy a stadium. No problem.

My major concern is you are giving a bunch of Teenagers a lot of extra pocket cash. If I can remember way back to my youth, (I was on campus for the '81 National Championship) I would have gotten into a lot more trouble if I didn't have to live with budget restraints. I can see a big boom with drug problems, drinking and reckless behavior. Dabo is correct again.
