“ Tigers are to get back some of that recruiting mojo. The hope around the complex is that with a younger (and harder-working) staff, ”

I don't think its a staff thing. I think we have to get a handle on the NIL thing.

We have had a few swings and missed lately. I blame some of that on Covid restrictions and the lack of getting kids on campus.

With that said, I agree with Hood that we need to get back to focusing on Georgia, SC and NC. When Clemson has been good (Ford and Swinney), we have had our pick of talent from NC and SC with some wins in Georgia.

Re: Agreed that the comment is interesting

Jan 12, 2022, 11:40 AM

I agree. get back to georgia, though there is no evidence that two national titles helped us in SC.

Now, who is in charge of calling that West Texas 5-star QB and tell him to get out of Clemson? He doesn't fit our recruiting footprint.

COVID restrictions only limited the 2021 class. We had plenty of swings and misses in the 2019 and 2020 classes.

I think it's safe to say right now... We Not Too Deep

Jan 12, 2022, 8:46 AM [ in reply to Interesting comment ]

It appears that parts of our program have been on cruise control over the past 3 years. I'm not saying that those parts are terrible, but not quite Best is the Standard.

Talents like TL and DW would tend to do allow some relaxing in all aspects. This past football season kind of exposed it. Call it injuries and lack of depth, miss evaluations on the recruiting trail, or coaching, etc., we slid down the slippery slope from the pinnacle. The same can happen with Bama and UGa. It just takes a little to miss perfection.

I also commend the staff with the valiant effort to get us back to 10 wins. That NCSU game could have been a turning point and it was looking like a 6 win season was probable.

If we can do that with a partial roster, then perfection is possible with a full one. Our program should be maxed out with 4-5 star kids. Fill in depth with 2-3 stars. I expect/hoping for a same turn around in recruiting for the February signing day. Cross my fingers.

Absolutely IT. Excellent post.

There has been some cruising, lounging by Lake Keowee, and enjoying the fruits of some of the highest coaching salaries in the country. After the 2018 natl championship, the level of urgency in the program appeared to decrease from Dabo on down. This is just human nature and not a dig at Coach Swinney or the excellent strategy he employed to level the playing field vs. coaching/recruiting juggernaut at Bama (e.g. high character kids, reduced offers, and assembling a large group of egoless practice players to support the starting rotation -- but not qualified to compete on game day.)

This strategy was extremely effective at differentiating Clemson from Bama and UGA. And it worked primarily due to DW4 and TL16 as well CW42, Power Rangers, IS11 and top WR's. Then the program became to heavy with local scholarship walk-ons. And there were some recruiting misses at QB and continued recruiting misses on the OL, then lots of injuries in 2021. More than anything, when DW4 and TL16, the top QB's in the country, left the team, the QB skill set which put Clemson over Bama was gone. In 2016, DW4 and a very solid Tiger team beat a better Bama team (with IMHO the best Bama Defense of all time though eSECpn claims that to be the case every year.) And the 2018 team with CW42, the Power Rangers and IS11 leading the way, and uber-talented TL16 and NFL-ready WR's, was the most talented Tiger team of all time.

As you state very well, the efforts by players and coaches to achieve 10 wins in 2021 was valiant. But there has been a drop-off. It will be interesting to see how Dabo and promoted staff adjust in 2022.

In the last three years? NC finals once, NC playoffs once. Some cruise control. The problem with some "fans" is that a national title is seen as the divine right of kings.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I think it's safe to say right now... We Not Too Deep

Jan 13, 2022, 8:46 AM

The point is that Lawrence and Etienne were masking the root cause of deeper issues, which is hard to disagree with.

Can someone name the last Power 5 team that went from a top 10 offense to outside the top 100 in 1 season?

Jan 13, 2022, 4:34 PM [ in reply to Re: I think it's safe to say right now... We Not Too Deep ]

Hate to say it, they are right. We got embarrassed in the semis. Since 2018, the offense has slowly been on the decline to the point we are at right now. Passing ratings around 110th. Even a game manager can win the Natty with the right players around them.
I get blind faith, sometimes. Other times I shake my head and wonder how much you’ve paid attention the last three years! Don’t confuse identifying issues with not loving your team. I tell my wife when she’s messing up. Just like she tells me. It doesn’t mean we don’t love each other. It means quite the opposite.

Pretty much what I told everyone entertaining the thoughts of pulling for the mutts. A title for them just makes a tough job even tougher where recruiting is concerned.

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 9:00 AM

I understand this perspective, but I really don’t think it will change much from what has been happening the last few years. UGA has been getting top recruiting classes and beating us on recruiting battles for years. If not money being slid to them before, now they can do it openly. Also Kirby could sell the “one player away from natty, and you can be the one” line, if they needed more encouragement than just cash. They have a prettier trophy case now and can take pictures with the natty trophy, but I think UGA will still beat us for the type of recruit they typically get. Dabo will still get his type of player, and if clemson can figure out an NIL structure it will make it even easier.

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 9:10 AM

If you look at our list of recruits for the past few years, we have become a national recruiter not a regional one. Georgia's title means little for the state of Georgia because a 2nd look at their list the past few years shows they got who they wanted before the championship. Recruiting is hard and will be even harder until high school coaches, parents and recruits build relationships with our new coordinators.

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

I didn't realize that we had 0 commits from Georgia and North Carolina. That's just crazy. We've thrived with elite recruits from those two states. Kind of sad to see us not being able to sign any this year.

My feelings as well.
These are facts and it is disheartening.
If we can't swoop in NC, Ga. and Florida for a couple 4 and 5 stars it will very hard to compete for the playoffs and or dominate our conference.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We lost the 2 we wanted from NC to UNC and UGA

Jan 12, 2022, 10:54 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State ]

That was pre UGA natty, and UNC isn’t close to winning one. I really don’t think them winning a natty changed much. They basically won one in their heads for the last 41 years because when have they ever had an issue recruiting? Never.

By "working harder" and "get back some of that recruiting mojo" you mean "find oodles of cash to bribe top talent to come to your school" then the actions will be aligned.

Ironically, Mr. Smart and Mr. Saban have now sounded the alarm on the NIL. They’ve realized that UGA and UA can’t compete with the programs located in fossil fuel states or big tech states.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 11:44 AM

Ding, ding, ding we have a winner here. Bama and Georgia have been cheating big for decades. In one of those other states, Texas A$M is a well known cheater, but now it's legal and they have more money than the Bama's and Georgia's of the world.
The same with Texas. Explain how a team that goes 5-7 can recruit the top 5 class in the country? It doesn't happen often, but the times they are a changing.
Saban will retire soon and Bama will possibly turn to crap like they were before he came.

Also, the portal isn't all that some of you make it out to be. Sure, there's some good talent transferring, but there's also mostly guys that couldn't crack the two deep and that's the majority of the mighty portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

SC fans say Clemson cheat. Clemson fans say UGA/Bama cheats.

Who do UGA/Bama fans say cheat?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 10:32 AM

It's really simple, NIL and the portal have changed recruiting. You want the 4 and 5 star recruits you have to pay them. It's all about the money. To all the people out there who wanted NIL I hope you are ready to give your share of the money to get these players.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 11:45 AM

Bama has been paying them already and so has Georgia. I know for a fact that they have and I know that Auburn is guilty as well. But, no mas. Now, it's legal and they will no longer have that advantage

Jan 12, 2022, 11:28 AM

Look into our recruiting philosophy as well as the transfer portal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 11:40 AM

That's not necessarily true. Georgia has been recruiting lights out for a while with Smart and even some before with Richt. The states of Georgia and Florida are loaded with talent and they can't all go to Georgia and some of the best Bulldog players are from other states, too. Clemson already won 2 national titles with moderately good recruiting classes. Clemson will be fine in spite of all the hand wringing happening on this site.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 12:44 PM

Mr. Hood, you make great points and provide excellent examples to accentuate your recommendations.

But it is hard for any program that has had success in national recruiting (such as Dabo's bunch) to walk away from the national recruits.

DJU ... obviously not as good as his HS ranking is from CA; but so was Bryce Young (who worked out like no other QB in college FB). Also J.Ngata and B.Collins (OK, clearly not great like S.Watkins [FL guy]), but better (when we got them) than anything from S.Carolina. OK, the W.Forest WRs (some of whom are local NC guys) make your point to 'buy local.'

Isaiah Simmons / Jaren Kanak ... KS recruits. Obviously Kanak de-committed (coaching change). But inarguably I.S. was brilliant, and we all figure that J.K. will (at worst) be good and maybe much more.

Cade Klubnik / Andrew Mukuba / R.J.Mickens ... TX recruits.

R.Orhorhoro ... MI recruit

Mario Goodrich / Etinosa Reuben ... MO recruits.

Clemson has to be smart enough to recognize when NC and GA are home to great-recruiting opposing coaching staffs (UNC - Mack Brown is legendary recruiter [not much more than that] ... UGA has a tremendous 'home state' advantage just like Bama has in Alabama. During those years when the state of N.Carolina has a UNC program with great recruiters (M.Brown and Dirty Butch Davis), we've got to be smart enough to not put all of our eggs in the NC basket.

OK, enough of my over-done response.

Still, another great article / opinion piece by you, Mr. Hood.

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 12:55 PM

Well, we have to stabilize and reestablish with the new recruiting team - we also have to get back to making the folks that come in BETTER by the time they leave. That means that while still recruiting the top 100 we also have a big focus on potential - who is underrated that can come in a 3-star and leave a 5-star? AND get active in the portal - look at what just left UGA and Bamma..... Not saying we need any of those in particular but we might use them or others to fill in the big gaps we have now in talent and especially DEPT.

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 2:44 PM

I'm thinking that geography plays a big part. As much as it has kills me to say this, I need to. Clemson is in the middle of nowhere. It has always been in the middle of nowhere. I went there for football camp in 1982 and it was in the boondocks. I made the pilgrimage to see the power rangers at Greenville Mall a couple of years ago. It was in the boondocks. As far as I'm concerned, the best things in south carolina are Clemson, the butt(peach) water tower, and the beaches. In that order. I don't want to belittle the state, it's a simple fact that S.C. lacks metropolises. That's a good thing except when recruiting kids who want to get out of the country and into the bright lights, limelights.
There isn't a whole bunch that can be done about that. And I wouldn't change it for the world, but until we have a few more very prosperous years and build on that "dynasty" perspective, we will play second fiddle to the big city and/or big dynasty institutions.

That’s a silly comment. Ever been to Athens? Or South Bend, Tallahassee, Ann Arbor, Columbus, or Happy Valley? They’re all little podunk towns. That’s not the reason a kid comes to Clemson or not.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 2:58 PM

It’s not really that big of an issue any longer. If you miss on them out of high school, then you can get a high percentage of them out of the portal when they leave after becoming dissatisfied with their playing time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 3:20 PM

I agree our focus should primarily be the Carolinas, western TN, GA, northern to central FL. South FL and CA are suspect when it comes to cultural fits and character. For example, after the UGA loss, DJ comes to presser in Cam Newton outfit…..someone should have reminded him we lost the game. I’m sure he got that feedback because that was the end of the fashion shows, but still….that was his first instinct. I suppose I’ve just got a bad taste in my mouth right now regarding players from CA.

Re: TNET: Georgia title means Tigers have to work even harder in Peach State

Jan 12, 2022, 5:07 PM

Well big surprise that Clemson has more work cut out for them !! If you want to play at an elite level, then you have to recruit at an even higher level. Going into Georgia, Alabama, Texas and even California is a fait accompli. Scour the country and leave no stones unturned. Get them to Death Valley and make it work. The Big SEC schools obviously have a pipeline to multiple layers of talent and they all want to play for the big Dawgs or the Tide. The Tigers can compete, but it takes the right mix and slowing down the portal transfer stuff. All a very tall order, but doable for our Tigers. This is a very big off-season Go Clemson
