TNET: Dabo Swinney compares Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence in candid comments

Dabo Swinney compares Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence in candid comments

Another member of the New York sports media joined Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney’s press conference Tuesday morning to ask about quarterback Trevor Lawrence, and listeners wound up with a comparison between Lawrence and current Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. Full Story »

My observations having watched them both very closely:
Trevor has a stronger arm.
Watson was slightly better under pressure/clutch performer.

Agree completely. The bigger the moment, the bigger DW4 played. He's also a more instinctive and elusive runner than Trevor.

IMO, Trevor has a higher upside than DW4 because of his stature and edge in arm strength.

DW4 carried the team on his back for two consecutive years and led us to the championship game. Both times he balled out against a great defense that constantly took shots at his head. Trevor hasn't needed to carry that type of burden.

If Trevor plays great and closes the sale with a 2nd national championship, he'll probably take the crown away from DW4. I want consistency from him the entire year and for him to go next level in the CFP.

This is gonna be fun!

If DW4 was Moses, TL16 is Joshua.

Watson was more transitional than Trevor for our program. He IS more athletic, though not as fast, and he is more of a risk-taker. Trevor will not throw near as many picks as Watson, but once he loses his stable of superior talent by leaving Clemson he may need to take those risks.

Trevor is a great leader and elevates the play of everyone around him, but Watson’s leadership was beyond comparison. That final drive In the Natty in 2016 was filled with so many Tigers just making plays in response to Deshaun’s leadership. And his play in the NCSt game that year was truly incredible in terms of leadership.

Put simply to me, Trevor has had it easier because Deshaun had elevated the program. Trevor gets to throw to a bevy of 4*s against a conference that is rebuilding its depth, and he is protected by a defense that is lights out. When Deshaun played, the conference had some serious threats and our defense had enough holes that it occasionally gave up 35-40 points.

Remember when Watson threw for 580 yards—and we lost?

It can’t be held against Trevor that he has not had to be transitional, but we haven’t seen him elevate a program like he would have to in NY. Meanwhile, DW4 has proven that he can, but hasn’t been given the tools to do it.

I believe you are highlighting Deshaun as the hero who almost won a game for us with his 580 yards passing, when in fact if Deshaun had removed any 1 of his 3 INTs (especially the last) we would have won the game without the last second heartbreak.

Sometimes superhero Deshaun had to come out after he put the team in a tight spot with some of those INTs.

It's not really fair to criticize Trevor for being less of a hero simply because he doesn't put the team in bad positions.

Also, I'm not sure the ACC is worse than it was in '15 or '16 but we are much better.

I'm not so sure that we are better in the WR category however. We don't have a junior Mike Williams, junior Artavis Scott, junior Hunter Renfrow combo on our team right now. Trevor is currently working with senior Amari Rodgers and a bunch of young guys. Ladson is currently our #2 WR and he is pretty comparable to a SO Deon Cain who was a role player with Deshaun.

Legette vs Galloway/Davis favors Legette in terms of receiving the ball at this point also.

Yes, DW4 made more mistakes than Trevor, no question.

But Dabo owned the decision to run the ball on both 3rd-and-1 and 4th-and-1 when the DBs were playing 5 yards off the WRs and all we needed was a first down to ice our 42-40 lead.

No question TL doesn't get to inflate his stats overcoming his own turnovers. We also don't have a defense getting killed in poor matchups like watching Boulware trying to cover a 6'5" TE.

The one thing DW4 has more of than Trevor is

Oct 20, 2020, 1:40 PM

Escapability! He is very slippery in the pocket. Almost can't count the times since he has been in the NFL where it looked like he was in the grasp of a defender, and then at the last possible second, he pops out of there, runs to daylight, and hits a big throw down the field. The only other guys in the league that have that same knack to me are Mahomes and Russell Wilson. Lamar Jackson probably has more pure running ability, but doesn't (yet) track receivers downfield while on the run as good as DW4.

Lamar PROBABLY has more pure running ability? Good Lord***

No body but Dabo could have stayed as neutral with that question as Dabo has done with it. Most evey coach out there would have measured both guys to where one of them would have been a clear winner, and Dabo shut it down with one being taller with longer hair. Who else could have done a better job answering that question, noo body that I've ever known!!!

I thought the exact thing when I was reading the article.

I will echo the slight edge that Deshaun has in facing pressure. He doesn't see it.

Just this past week against the Titans, driving for what should have been the winning score. He never looked rattled, or rushed. Similar to the Nat'l Champ against Bama, where he took a bad snap, calmly looked up, and made a play.

We are blessed to have watched both of these tremendous players, and will be talking about a third QB in this regard, starting next year.

Go Tigers!

Great answer by Dabo. I won't try to compare them either. I'll just say we fans are truly blessed they both came to Clemson.
