TNET: Clyde Trapp fires back at Brownell haters: "Coaches are human, too."

Clyde Trapp fires back at Brownell haters: "Coaches are human, too."

Senior Clyde Trapp sat down for his postgame interview with the media late Friday and barely listened to the first question. Once that question was over, Trapp apologized and then took a few minutes to defend his coach and the Clemson program with a heartfelt message. Full Story »

I vote to spend more time and money on football and demolish all other sports that don't contribute to Dabo winning more national titles. Haha.

“I’d rather have a lot of talent and a little experience than a lot of experience and a little talent.” – John Wooden
I believe he also said something about somehow being a better coach when he had better players...
We have good people and good players but last night they got totally out-hustled, completely out-rebounded and could not hit the rim, much less the basket. How do you win a tournament game like that? The announcers hit it on the nose - there is a difference in a tournament game and a regular game and between a regular game and practice. Any of you that were did sports know this very well.
We're pretty good and were in the top group of a historically bad ACC this year but I don't think we were any better than we have been.
Is this good enough? I guess it depends on who you ask but it is not just a Brownell thing - glad to see his players sticking up for him and he for them!

If there’s a difference in how you practice and a regular game, a regular game and a tournament game, you’re doing it wrong.

Recruiting has always been our problem. That is why Barnes left. We can’t get 5 Stars, Duke and UNC have their benches loaded.
Duke missed the Tournament this year, and UNC lost in the first round. Kentucky missed!
Brownell has us in the top 40, out of 357 Teams, we all want to be top 10!
We have struggled to recruit for over 50 years. Only replace Brownell if you are certain it is an upgrade. Like Bowden......
Our best FB coaches were from the Clemson staff (Dabo, Danny Ford, Howard, even Pell).
Go Tigers, Beat Jawja...

Mar 20, 2021, 10:16 AM

To be honest I am torn on this matter. I think Coach is a good dude who is helping to mold fine young men. And being that Basketball will always be a distant 2nd to Football at CU I do believe making the tournament every few years is good enough for the administration frankly. All that said it feels like we are still missing out on a lot. Usually a firstround loser in any end of season tournament, be it NCAA, ACC or even the NIT, that is kinda weak frankly. Yes, I know several years back we made the 16.. but still... Will Brad be back? no doubt in my mind. Maybe we just need a couple of hot shot assistants that are also great recruiters as I feel we still miss out on the higher end targets. I HOPE that Brad is turning a corner, but I feel that this might be the holding pattern we are to remain in for the foreseeable future. And I put some of that blame on people like myself, as with so many of us other than Judge and a few others,
this likely this will be the last time I think about Basketball until next winter. Go Tigers!

I'm not just seeing this one game, or the game before losing to Miami, I'm looking at 11 years of nothing special happening under Brownell's leadership. Go back and look at my post history, and anyone will see that I have supported, and believed that Brad was right for our program for 10 years.

But this last season of up, and down, up, and down with the talent that Brad has with a deep bench, it has proven to me if no one else, it's time for a change, and I'm hoping that the Clemson administration feels the same way bc, it is time for a change!!!

Well said Clyde Trapp. Clemson may fire Coach Brownell but University Presidents and Athletic Directors are in their positions because they make decisions not just on facts but for what is best for the school and the young men and women that represent the school. I, as a fan, want Clemson to win every game in every sport but I also want our athletes to receive a great education and leave Clemson a better person. The reality of the situation is we will never win every game in every sport and we should either watch or not watch but leave the decisions to people that know what they are doing.

1

Mar 20, 2021, 10:45 AM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Clyde Trapp fires back at Brownell haters: "Coaches are human, too." ]

I must have missed something.

I think what a lot of people are saying is he’s a human who is not excelling at his job after 11 years, and sometimes it’s time for a change. That is just life.

I’m all for these players saying publicly that they love and support their coach. That’s wonderful.
But when they complain about the fact that some people are not satisfied with his performance, that is crossing a line.

Awesome comments from Trapp and Brownell is a good coach and a good representative of Clemson and a good person. But this game was not managed well at all. The last 36 seconds were horrible- no coach would sit on those fouls to give and let the clock wind down to 6 seconds and hope for a defensive stop. Too small a margin for error even if we do get the stop. And Rutgers is a terrible FT shooting team...

There were players who supported Ken Hatfield and Larry Shyatt too

Mar 20, 2021, 10:47 AM

It means nothing.

Look, Clyde, people don't "hate" Brad Brownell. We hate being stuck in mud for 11 years. We want the basketball program to be better than what Mr. Brownell is capable of accomplishing.

Most of the team had no issue with Tommy Bowden, and when shat hit the fan they would play hard for him. In 2003 Mr. Bowden was about to be fired. Then, players rallied around and, we won out the rest of the season with a HUGE upset of FSU, we beat Duke, we beat the snot out of South Carolina (63-17), and we beat a highly favored Tennessee team in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

Players can love their coach, but that doesn't mean they can coach. Thanks for supporting the coach, but he has shown his ceiling.

Best of luck, Clyde. And Coach.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Agree. But to be fair, I don’t think Trapp said “hate”...

1

Mar 20, 2021, 10:51 AM

The joke of a “journalist” added that little nugget to get clicks.

But Trapp did suggest that people are not treating Brownell like a human, and that is totally preposterous.

Mar 20, 2021, 12:00 PM [ in reply to There were players who supported Ken Hatfield and Larry Shyatt too ]

Well stated.

Lived near Dayton Ohio and watched many games in person when BB at Wright State and Brian Gregory was at UD. Thought both would be good fits. Gregory didn't last long at Ga Tech, I'm afraid- truly a shame. I've been in BB's corner for years, but it's been tough to watch the coaching lapses the last few years. It's not always the players, sometimes is the right coaching moves.

BB is well liked around the league, but maybe it's time we look for a change.

Mar 20, 2021, 12:21 PM

Well said Clyde. CBB is a fine man and I am glad you became a better person and loved your 4 years at Clemson as I did. The challenge for many of us fans is we want to win so bad and some of these losses are real head scratchers. I do believe the program is very slowly improving and our recruiting is definitely getting better. We did make it to the Dance, tough to fire a coach at a football school who does that.

Re: TNET: Clyde Trapp fires back at Brownell haters: "Coaches are human, too."

Mar 20, 2021, 12:22 PM

Good for Clyde and good for Brownell that his players love him. That’s a much better scenario than scandal, cheating, and the type of locker room discontent that places like FSU have.

That said...yes Brownell is human but he’s also the only one being paid $2million to coach Clemson basketball. While the players may like him, the program has made no progress in terms of being more competitive. Being a good guy with a good reputation will only take you so far when the other things you’re paid to do don’t happen. Just ask Tommy Bowden. The same will happen to Brownell.

Yes, adding to a young mans 'walk of life' is a component of a coaches responsibility, but the players and coaches are there for a purpose: WIN. To deny proper instruction & leadership is no different than an English professor not teaching a student how to properly write a paper.

Back in the Day...

Mar 20, 2021, 2:26 PM

Next time I’m in Tigertown, I’ll stop by and chat with BB - you know, just to get to know the guy. I’m sure he’ll make time for me. When he first arrived and I met him at IPTAY Rep Day - I was early and so was he - I introduced myself. He seemed very uncomfortable and awkward in his conversation. Monte Lee was just standoffish. Contrast that with Coach Ford, who acted as though he had known me for years and knew exactly where my hometown was up North. The same could be said for Jack Leggett. And Dabo...well, Dabo is Dabo. GO TIGERS!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad is awsome and I’ve always enjoyed talking to him but

Mar 20, 2021, 4:03 PM

I also enjoyed talking to Tommy Bowden. Same goes for Monte. I don’t think anyone is saying bad or negative things about Brad’s character. I believe he runs a great program from an ethics stand point but at the end of the day the W & L ‘s matter. I believe he’ll be here next year but I don’t believe he should be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well Clyde! Most people arent making over 2 million a year to be mediocre either. With that being said, I do believe this was BB best coaching year of the 11 years at Clemson. I did not expect them to go 16-8 and make the NCAA Tournament. However, over his career, he is still mediocre at best.

Kudos to Trapp for standing up for his coach.... but I am sorry. I simply believe that it should be the other way around. Coaches stand up for their players and take the heat when their team doesn't perform up to expectations. (See Dabo's comments regarding the Sugar Bowl.) When (departing) players are trying to convince the fanbase that a coach should stay I personally believe that is much like the handwriting on the wall. Just my 2 cents (and probably not worth that) :)
