TNET: Clemson's passing game struggles mean Uiagalelei, receivers have to step up

Clemson's passing game struggles mean Uiagalelei, receivers have to step up

If Clemson’s offense is to make the kind of turnaround the coaches want and the fans expect, it’s going to take more than two wide receivers making plays. And it will take quarterback DJ Uiagalelei getting them the football. Full Story »

DJ throws a very hard ball to catch. Then he is nowhere close to the receiver. Then he stares the receiver down. He looks very confused

I think that it would be a good thing if the media, the fan base, and most of all the coaches would just stop making excuses or pointing a finger at somebodies fault. The whole truth is, our team hasn't been playing good FB, and bc of that, everybody has their opinion on how to fix it, or who should be blamed for our team not playing very good FB. The coaches need to stop over analyzing playing bad FB, and get back to coaching hard and better. All the mistakes being made isn't bc we have bad players bc, when we take a look at who we have playing, most of them was suppose to be better than what we've had as a whole in Dabo's head coaching career. So it has to be what they are being coached to, or the playing aren't understanding what it is they're suppose to do bc, all of the mistakes and mishaps are bc somebody isn't where they were suppose to be, somebody didn't pick up a block bc they were blocking the wrong person, or a WR is way out of place, or the WR's are dropping more balls than are catching. IMO, it all starts with the coaching on the offensive side of the ball bc that is where the most of everything that is going wrong is happening.

We don't see all that many mistakes on the defensive side of the ball do we. The fact is, if not for the defense, we could very easily be 1-4 this very moment, and nobody has a better answer to why all the mistakes, than they did from game #1. If Dabo still wants to be the HC of our Tigers, he needs to go back to work, and his job is to fix things when they're not working in a way to give our team, the best chance to win, but, our players on the offense is making the very same mistakes they have been making since the season started. And for him to say that it wasn't just about our mistakes, and using the type of defense being used against us as an excuse, well then he needs to get up earlier, and go to bed later like he had to do when he was building our team into a championship FB team.

FB is an offensive/defensive game, and we're suppose to have experience coaches of both sides of the ball that can make in game adjustments on both sides of the ball to get around what ever our opponents are doing to stop, or confuse us. It's been 6 weeks T-Net, the coaches should have come up with a plan to defeat what every opponent is using/doing against us long before now. I believe that our biggest issues right now, IS inexperience coaching, or no coaching, and it's past time for making excuses.

It's time that Dabo fixes what ever the team problems are, and do it without caring about hurting somebodies feeling bc, all of his players, and his coaches must be held accountable, and that every bodies job could count on them getting it fixed, or he will get someone, or put someone in their place that can fix their problems, even if it means having to bring someone in that can fix it, even if it means someone has to go, bc that is Dabo's most important job as the HC, and that's getting the right people in that can continue, and improve on what he has built at Clemson. That is what Saban has done to keep Bama at the very top. If they want to be his best friend, they better keep his players being the best they can be, or the friendship is over, and he will send them packing, and that is the attitude that Dabo will have to have to keep what he has built at the top

solid bricks must be. Would explain a lot from our OT loss.

Why do we continue to praise Ross and not mention the ball he dropped in the OT with NCSU? The same catch their receiver had made to put them ahead. And where is Ajou Ajou? He was going to be so explosive this year. Did anyone watch the ND game last night and see what happened when they changed QBs? Sure wish Dabo would give it a try.

Maybe it "is" time to play two QB's. Bring Pom in every few series and give DJ a chance to watch from the sidelines and see whats going on. Start doing this in the first quarter and not at the end. Maybe DJ can do better if he knows not everything is on his shoulders. He has too much talent not to start improving

Our receivers would be much better DJ showed any anticipation or timing in his throws. They don't know when to expect the ball and when it comes it's 100 mph and off target.

Outside of our scripted drives and our cupcake game to sc st DJ has throw ONE to pass an one pick 6. That's absolutely awful.

Yep... I believe the reason DJ throws mostly fast balls is because he doesn't anticipate very well and tries to make up for being late on his decision making by steaming the ball as fast as he can to the receiver. After watching a ton of other QB's yesterday, it is obvious that DJ's anticipation and "touch" on the ball is not where it should be.

There are times when high school QBs look to be ready to start for a NFL team, and when they get to college they come unglued. They never get use to the speed of the game, or all the pressure college players can bring bc of all the different angles, and blitzes designed by college coaches. And some players never adjust to that college game pressure. Then there are some that got hit really hard early in their college career, and they're scared to take another hit like the one that hurt so bad!!! High School QBs are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you got when they first enter the college game!!!;)

Could it be, that other teams have figured out Tigers system

and how to stop it? Changes needed? Fresh, new ideas instead of "this is what we do?"

Re: Could it be, that other teams have figured out Tigers system

They knew how to stop it 6 years ago but they couldn’t because we took what they gave & made the play. The TE’s, WR’s & the QB hold more responsibility than the OL..... DJ hasn’t played close to his potential or abilities but he has had plenty of help being bad....

We will get better & in the long run it’s best we go thru this now if we are going to be ready for the ACC championship or bowl games.

This team will come together to become unbeatable period! We have the technology & talent but we have to put it together. Had we not messed up that NC State game we would be still sitting in the drivers seat.

Dabo is right. There have been a lot of drops this year. DJU has missed a lot of open receivers. So now it’s time to correct the problem. If DJU cannot hit a receiver when rolling out maybe see if we have a QB that can. If the receivers cannot catch maybe try a back up. Something has to be changed to bring forth the change. Doing the same thing over and over will not create change.

If you and I are 10 yards apart and tossing the football, you’re going to catch most of them.
Now replace me with a John Elway type and tell him to throw it hard as he can each time. I guarantee you will drop more than you catch.
It leaves me scratching my head as to why DJ seems to be unable to take a little off of the short to mid-range passes. A QB can still have a quick release without having to launch a rocket. Hopefully, those mechanics will work themselves out…..soon.

This doesn’t give me confidence that the coaches have tried anything different during the bye week… expecting everything to eventually come together on its own sounds like, well… the definition of insanity

Re: TNET: Clemson's passing game struggles mean Uiagalelei, receivers have to step up

Drops are one thing but it seems a large majority of plays, the receivers aren't getting separation. The coaches and receivers are both contributing to this. Obviously DJ isn't absolved of the problems, but this is one striking difference between this year and last.

He is the only one.

These Are The Facts....

Oct 10, 2021, 1:49 PM

1) Per 50% of the folks out there David Hood isn't a real fan because he's criticizing the team.

2) Dabo won't play anyone at QB but DJ unless the Tigers are 35 points ahead . So pointing out
that other teams bench their starters is a moot point.

3) The Transfer Portal is like the time tunnel ( Hat tip to the 70's) it'll be used in the future at Clemson when Dabo retires .

4) Any changes to the team will be made in the off season. What the Tiger have is what they will use.
We heard from Elliot that NCst was using things they hadn't seen before. He had 2.5 hours due to the rain delay to change things up based on what they were seeing ....he didn't change and that was one reason the Tigers lost.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: These Are The Facts....

Oct 10, 2021, 2:52 PM

Ummm… GA Tech used the “things not seen before” and it was that game the rain delay happened. A simple mistake I imagine but not fact as you say. The REAL fact is, Elliot flips a coin and just calls plays at random. Been that way for years. He doesn’t adjust, just crosses his fingers and hopes it works.

RPO gotta go

Oct 11, 2021, 9:18 AM

I don't think DJ can make the reads AND throw a decent pass.

We saw in the ND and BC games last year that he can pass, but I think that we didn't ask him as a freshman to come of the bench and do RPO. Rather that we had him give the ball to ETN or had called pass plays.

There were an number of RPO calls in the BC game (I rewatched on TV this weekend because of our bye week and I was at the game and lacked replay and high-angle/overhead views) were DJU made a bad read, a number where he made the correct read but by the time he figured out what to do, the window of opportunity for receiver was closing fast, and his rushed, too-hard throws went into the dirt, over receivers' heads, or through the receiver's hands.

Give him a pocket to stand in with a called pass play, get the receivers to actually run their routes, and I think he can use his arm more effectively (because he won't be "thinking").

Re: TNET: Clemson's passing game struggles mean Uiagalelei, receivers have to step up

Oct 11, 2021, 12:26 PM

I'm just hoping they spent this off week looking at what's working and what's not working. It's time to stop pretending that everything will magically start working just because it did with Trevor and Travis. We have explosive 4 star athletes that need to be let loose. The defense is awesome and bails them out time after time, but it's like the offense is afraid to do make a mistake. Stuck in analysis paralysis.

Opposing coaches are not going to allow DJ to do the things he did last year and , for some reason, he can’t adjust as the game is played. All teams that we play have good coaches!
