Clemson offense wilts under Georgia pressure in frustrating loss

Clemson’s offense suffered through a historically inept performance Saturday night at Bank of America Stadium, scoring just three points as No. 5 Georgia defeated No. 3 Clemson in the Duke’s Mayo Classic. (Photo: Jim Dedmon / USATODAY) Full Story »

Fk that. These are paid employees now. Dabo needs to fire some people and open the portal to O lineman, everywhere.

The coaches lost this game. Clemson ran the ball only 2 times in the second half (10 times total). They made it easy for the Georgia defense. Snap to DJ, drop back into the pocket, either throw to tightly defended receivers or take a sack. If you don’t mix up the play calling, you make it easy for the defense. Let DJ play his style of game or be prepared to lose again.

We ran into a buzz-saw for real, we easily could have won but DJ got rattled earlier & never recovered. It was a good game of tough defense, Our offense will rebound & be ready for them in the playoffs.

We don’t have anything to hang our heads about, our defense played incredibly well all night.

3-3 game minus the int for a touchdown! Both defenses were great, we could have & should have taken advantage of their cornerbacks.

Kendrick was a huge help for them too.

Such an abysmal performance by the offense that wasn't helped by play calling. The offense was completely outmatched. It's going to be a long year where we may lose once or twice more if we don't improve substantially and quick. The only bright spot is the defense but Georgia isn't known to have a high octane offense under Kirby, therefore, I'm not sure how much of a quality measurement that is. I haven't seen our offense that inept in over 10 years. It's just disappointing because we have been outmatched against LSU in '19, Ohio State in '20 and now Georgia.

Big Cinco was intimidated all night. Period. Looked like a lost ball in high weeds

Agreed. My post has already been downvoted but I mean I'm sorry I'm a realist and have high expectations.

Wow that was painful. I know Georgia is good but we had so many opportunities and just fell flat. No leaders on offense. No real offensive game plan. Didn’t change anything all night. Can’t heap enough praise on the defense. Incredible job without T Davis. Looks like we have a ton of growing up to do and fast

I’m beginning to think we need another OC. We did nothing to neutralize the blitzing linebackers, no screens, no draw plays, nothing. And DJ looked like a lost ball in high weeds. This was sad on the offensive side of the ball. There will be no givens this year with this kind of coaching and QB play.

well with the caveat, its only one game AND we won't another D like that until we play them, OSU or Alabama if we make the playoffs BUT those three are who we compare ourselves to and we have not measured up in three years now.
Plenty to coach up on penalties and getting folks off the field but the D did a fantastic job overall and played winning football.
On offense the OL continued to be our weak point - as expected. We hid them because of ETN and Trevor for a couple of years but we all know they can't run block. I think its time we consider why that is the case, and this is a pattern even against weak opponents where we repeatedly can't straight run the ball. When you have a QB that either can't or won't run the ball it just gets worse. DJ will learn to go through his progression quickly but we either have to change him or change the offense. Our offense for a decade has been predicated off the QB run - if we want to continue that he should start by losing 20 pounds. I don't recall even trying to roll him out - he just sat there and took sack after sack. If you are going to have him sit there in the pocket then you better get a better line and run an offense with some RB's you can throw to in the flats.
This game reminded me on offense of those 52-3 FSU games where we gained 125 yards total offense - I have not seen as poor of an effort by coaches and players for decades.
Hopefully we will gain some identity against the lowly ACC opponents but even that is not a given based on this performance and I think Herbi was spot-on on that point.
One game and one grade of "F" so we can only go up!

Coaching offensively was horrible. We had no answers. We did not run the ball enough. Protection from the offensive line was ok. DJ can't sit in the pocket forever and telegraph throws. The O Line can only keep them away for so long. It felt like DJ was unwilling to run when the plays were falling apart. We need to run the ball more. There is enough talent in the backfield to get things going. They probably should have pulled DJ in the first quarter.

Re: TNET: Do not blame the offensive line

Sep 5, 2021, 12:26 PM

they couldn't help it if Georgia's defensive line manhandled them. They couldn't help it they were the weaker bunch. They couldn't help it if they were slow of foot. They couldn't help it Georgia found out early they could have there way with them. They couldn't help it if there was no game plan adjustment for more QB rollouts with options to throw, run or throw it away. They can't help it if there is no progression ( and has never been ) to help them get better, stronger raise their level of play. There is a reason 5 star o line recruits don't come to Clemson, they are always told to look and see if there are any o linemen from Clemson in the NFL. Clemson's offensive line and offensive game plan and play absolutely killed the Clemson defense. Got a long way go. Let's see what happens.

JEFF SCOTT's leaving marked a Decline!

Sep 5, 2021, 8:46 PM

Things haven't been the same since Jeff Scott left... Remember that Clemson seemed to lose its edge ever since... slow, but a gradual decline. I really didn't realize his input on offense was so valuable... knew his recruiting was!

I felt it immediately but I hoped I was just me imagining things. I worry that Dabo's loyalty will inhibit him from making a change. Do you know what I mean?
