Clemson linebacker says team lost focus at UNC: "You can't cheat the game"

Clemson linebacker James Skalski met with the media Monday morning to look back at Clemson’s 21-20 victory over North Carolina nine days ago and look ahead to this week’s game against Florida St. Skalski said the Tigers, who had to hold off a late Tar Heel charge to win the game, learned a lot from the experience of winning a close game on the road. I like Skalski a lot, he seems like a good kid and a solid leader. But did anyone else get the feeling most of these talking points were something the whole defense heard from Coach Swinney this past week? Lot of Swinney-sounding phrases in here, including the title phrase "you can't cheat the game."

Nothing wrong with maintaining the company line, just amused me a bit how on the nose these quotes were.

I believe "you cant cheat the game" is a Venables saying.

High Level CFB Intensity!

You see it in H.S. football sometimes where a superior talented team allows a less talented team to hang around. Occasionally(rare) it can end in an upset. Simmons hit on it; "human nature is to kind of get ahead of yourself". People take mental short cuts all the time - this has been explained as "HEURISTICS"!
We all do it and it can lead to some irrational decision making for sure. Now, take a TEAM that has been grinding hard since end of July/1st of August and put an opponent that just lost at home to a group of 5 opponent, w/ so so record, you play for the last NC and you have a bye week after you play this opponent! Recipe for disaster!
To this staffs credit and this team will/effort the Tigers found a way to win despite not being sharp! U of Non-Compliance had just been embarrassed at home and played well above their normal skill level and ability. But, they lost. Tigers won!

This is the side of sports that has intrigued so many for so long! "Group psychology" basically; getting a large number of people to all focus on one thing. Kind of like a preacher to a congregation. Getting everyone to have the same sense of urgency and to become the best version of themselves within the team. Not an easy thing to do.
Again, I give our coaching staff all the credit in the world for the job they do. They are awesome!
