If Nike offers more NIL money for a player to go to Oregon than Hardee’s offers to go to Clemson, how is that not a total game changer? This is the problem. It’s not that any of us doesn’t want DJ driving a nice car.

This is an outrage! Two years ago Dabo callously and cruelly refused to let Trevor attend the ACC media days just to demonstrate his hate for the media. Now, he is foisting upon them a first year QB starter that no one from the Roanoke times or Durham Daily Dishrag cares about - preposterous! I would not be surprised to hear that Dabo orchestrated this whole Covid thing last year just to keep the beat writers from the Winston-Salem waste basket liners and the Charlotte chimney starter lighters from basking in the effervescent glow of the golden locks of #16.

There was much moaning and gnashing of teeth when he did not send Trevor. I read somewhere that the ACC requested he send DJ in addition to the 2 seniors he planned to send. No media hate from Dabo but we all know he does not give in on his principals.

excited. I can see him paying athletes to help him "develop products" for the players, not unlike what professional athletes do now. Same with the Underarmor guy at MD. I also don't know how they possibly regulate something like a booster that owns a car dealership letting a recruit know he'll pay them for promotion of they go to State U. They can't regulate this now.

So the one word I don't see in any of this is a word we all love, TAX. Will players receive 1099 statements and be taxed and the question then becomes how will the states and IRS police the income. Pretty hard to determine how much a player makes signing autographs at the mall. The next few years will be interesting to say the least.

directly to them by a business if the payments are at least $600 in a calendar year. As an example, DJU does an ad/promo for Delta Airlines and they pay him $10,000, then yes he would get a 1099 for that amount.
In your example, if the player is signing autographs and people are giving him cash on the spot, then obviously there would be no 1099 but he's supposed to report that income on his own (cough, cough). If payments for autographs are being made to Dick's Sporting Goods, and then Dick's turns around and cuts the check to the player, then a 1099 would be issued to the player (again, if at least $600 in a calendar year).
I'm not a tax lawyer, but I do play one on TV.

some student athlete and sponsor is going to get in trouble with the IRS. Any bets that it occurs in the SEC first (thinking UGA or Auburn)?
I can see it now - some local chuckle head hires a star athlete for a promo and pays them mostly in under the table cash while cutting them a small check that gets reported to the IRS for tax purposes. Said star athlete then starts spending the cash payment and/or puts it in the bank that in turn draws the eyes of the IRS. If these young college men think getting investigated by the NCAA is nerve racking - just wait until those pencil necks at the IRS start going after them...

Excellent explanation DHood, thanks for that! Personally, I'm still on the fence on the whole NIL deal but I feel CU will have a good resource in place for the players to help guide them through this process. What worries me is when they're away from campus, i.e. back home. I get paying a guy like Rencher to come speak to a church group or having guys do camps or local appearances back home for a little cash. They don't have to use the CU name because those people know them. What worries me is when you see things like "come to club so-and-so and hang out with player X, ladies get in free, no cover til..." etc.
I also wish there were some kind of rule in place to make it mandatory they bank at least 10% in some kind of interest earning savings so they have something to fall back on.

The sec hate for Clemson and Dabo, it's like on the top of their agenda!!! Since Dabo took Clemson to the top of the yearly ranking poles. The sec cringes when Dabo and Clemson is brought up in the top of the whos who conversations. They love to hate Dabo, but they would love him if they could get him to come over to their side of the sec fantasy BS!!!

But LG and C were neck and neck for weakest starter position on the 2020 squad. Bockhorst may be a veteran presence and a “quote machine”, but has he gained the ability to run and pass block? OL needs serious improvement and will arguably be the critical path determinant of how successful the 2021 team will be.
I will continue to pull for Leigh, Mayes or Tchio to move inside to start and place 2020 starters on the bench.

Well, I for one believe that players should get a stipend to help out with cloths, shoes, personal grooming, as well as help with there car expenses. As long as the University provides classes to help these athletes understand how to protect themselves, protect their earnings, and to be responsible with saving what they do get paid for so it can benefit them in the future. Basically, as long as the Athletic Department/Coaches/Advisors teach them to be responsible, I don’t believe this will be a problem. “FOR NOW”....
