TNET: Buckeyes say Isaiah Simmons is an "old-school" linebacker

Buckeyes say Isaiah Simmons is an "old-school" linebacker

The highest-profile defensive player at this year’s Fiesta Bowl is Ohio State defensive end Chase Young. However, members of the Ohio State offense know not to forget about Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons. Full Story »

This makes several stories that I've read on comments from the Ohio players and coaches. I've noticed that they are giving out nothing but high praise to our players and coaches making sure they don't give no more "fuel" than what has already been given.

Isaiah reminds me of George Webster who came out of Westside High in Anderson and played for Michigan State in the 1960s. They are about the same size and speed and played the same ways. I believe that Webster is the best player ever from the state.

Duffy Daugherty created the position called "Rover" for George, and he played all over the field like Isaiah does for Clemson. Not many realized that George was selected as the outstanding college defensive player of the 1960s decade over #### Butkus. A knee injury shortened his pro career and kept him from the HOF, but he is on the all time All AFL team.

Coach Frank Howard once told him, "George, you are the best football player I have ever seen. Your only problem is you were born a few years too soon to play for Clemson."

That is indeed ridiculous. Richard Butkus just dosnt sound quite the same.

Another guy that played for Daugherty at Michigan State that reminds me of Simmons is Brad Van Pelt. He also played LB and safety. He was way ahead of his time.

" Old School " is about as far a descriptive from what Simmons is as can be used .
If anything he's a hybrid safety/CB/ LB with a little DE mixed in there . He's doing things on the defensive side of the football that eliminates about 95% of the comparisons that can be made .
He can rush the QB from the DL or the second level . He can clamp the run and the pass from the first and second level . The dude can shut down TE's and he can effectively cover a WR downfield .
He's not an " Old School " LB , he's an absolute jack of most trades on the defensive side and he cannot be defined .
They're right about one thing though , you have to account for Isaiah Simmons on every single down .

Skalski being old-school. The way I read it. I don't think he meant Simmons was. Maybe I'm wrong.

Actually, I think he was referring to both in that they are totally fearless - in the blitz and in the filling gaps.

Yep this article actually butchers what the OSU OC was saying and mixed up two different comments. The old school with no notoriety comment referred to Skalski and Smith. Not sure who chopped this up but then they compounded their mistake by including it in the headline of the article. Shoddy work at best. Mitch McConnell would not be happy with this slap dash product.

Isaiah Simmons is indeed a hybrid. Closes with incredible speed on ball carriers like Anthony Simmons. He rushes the edge and makes plays behind the line of scrimmage like Wayne Simmons.

I guess O31-0 State has forgotten about Dorean O'Daniel. Same position, just an evolution with a faster player.

Old school is #### Butkus and Simmons is about as far from old school as it gets. Webster was nowhere near as fast as Simmons is.

Re: TNET: Buckeyes say Isaiah Simmons is an "old-school" linebacker

Dec 26, 2019, 9:40 AM

This article is somewhat confusing. Simmons has a combination of skills that have never been seen before in one player. Venables restructured this year's defense around his unique skill set. To me, that sounds more like he's a "leading edge" linebacker that's showing what the future holds for the position than an "old school" linebacker. I never saw "old school" linebackers breaking up passes 30+ yards downfield.

Re: TNET: Buckeyes say Isaiah Simmons is an "old-school" linebacker

Dec 26, 2019, 9:49 AM

Totally agree. I’ve been watching closely college football for more than 65 years and there is nothing “old school”about Simmons. No linebacker I have seen has the skill set that Simmons has. He’s a new edge guy and I hope Coach V has another one ready to play next year. There is no justice if Simmons isn’t recognized as one of college footballs top ten players ....... because he is.

Re: TNET: Buckeyes say Isaiah Simmons is an "old-school" linebacker

Dec 26, 2019, 9:59 AM

You are absolutely correct. It reminds me of a linebacker/defensive end that played at VT a number of years ago (Cory ?) when VT played in the national championship before joining the ACC. The was about 6'1 and 225 Lbs. and was a terror rushing the passer. He was actually too small for a defensive end in the pros and not really a dedicated linebacker, so there was really no position for him in the NFL. He may have played a year or two in the pros, but he virtually disappeared ..... but was a great college player.

There is an LB named Kuechly (sp) that breaks up passes all over the field... But he is not as fast as Simmons...

I’ve said it over and over this year - Simmons reminds me of Andy Headen. Had to create a position for him too. Then he went on to win Super Bowls with the Giants. Similar size, talent and work ethic.

Darren Woodson comes to mind when I think about players with Simmons skill set. Very fast and not afraid to bring the lumber, plus hes a sure tackler for the most part. I hope Simmons has the type of career Woodson had.
