TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

As things continue to trend in the right direction when it comes to a normal college football season, I can’t help but sit back and smile and think that there’s no better way to kick off the 2021 campaign than watching Clemson and Georgia in Charlotte.

May 20, 2021, 11:38 AM [ in reply to GREAT NEWS and GREAT ARTICLE! ]

One of the best games I have ever seen was back in 1981 Clemson vs. Georgia when they were defending national champions featuring Herschel Walker. Our Defense locked them down that day, they did not get in the end zone and Walker fumbled 3 times. He admitted the Clemson fans and our Defense affected his concentration on the game that day. Beating Georgia always feels better than beating the coots!

After the boisterous pregame antics of the Georgia fans, they left the stadium silent and stunned..... Absolutely awesome Clemson Defense performance.
We went on to our first National Championship, let's do it again Tigers! We have our Defense coming back to stand up to the dawgs again.

1981 Web Summary: Clemson forced a school record nine turnovers, including five interceptions on its way to a 13-3 victory over defending National Champion Georgia on September 19, 1981. The Bulldogs were ranked No. 4 in the country at the time.

Go Tigers, time to Beat Georgia in September again...

I have been to all then”big” games at Clemson over the years. Nothing and I mean nothing compares to Clemson-UGA. The matchups in the 80s were all classics. The 81 game was the loudest I have ever heard Death Valley. The Treadwell kick in Athens in 86 is another great memory . Can’t wait for this one.

Agree with your assessment!
Ho so you feel about SC State and U Conn games?
We need to get Coastal and App State on our rotation.......along with Georgia, Auburn, Texas A&M, ND......

I can’t wait for the kickoff of this game. Advantage QB, advantage OL, advantage secondary, advantage coaching big time. All Clemson Georgie is going down and then they will claim that the loss means nothing. Georgia and OSU always have numerous excuses when they lose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 20, 2021, 3:19 PM

"advantage OL". Which one of your OL do you think would start at UGA? You don't have a OT that is in Mims, Jones, McClendon's league. You don't have a guard in Salyer, Ratledge or Webbs league. You don't have a center in Van Pran, Webb or Condon's league.
So feel me in on what I'm missing?

Funny you tater's don't answer the question and go to being a grammar nazi!!
Your OL is going to get abused all night and you know it!!

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 21, 2021, 2:24 PM

Actually you’re partially correct, your defense will be on the field all night, and our Oline will get tired.

Re: What is the ticket situation for this game?******

May 20, 2021, 9:40 AM

Just spoke with ticket office.....they are allocating tickets since they have been told officially BOA stadium at full capacity. June/July before you know if you’re getting tickets.

badge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

28,000 tickets were allocated to each school...

May 20, 2021, 9:55 AM [ in reply to What is the ticket situation for this game?****** ]

which means demand will greatly exceed supply.

He did tear his ACL, but is expected to be a possible potential starter for this game, albeit that's hardly a guarantee.

Nah. Uga says a late season returnee if at all.

May 20, 2021, 10:39 AM

Right, I agree, & I imagine that's why he wasn't mentioned in the article at all. It's a HUGE loss for them. Fingers crossed we don't lose anyone nearly as important to us before that game; WE NEED THIS WIN.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The last time UGA beat us...

May 20, 2021, 9:40 AM

The last time UGA beat us was also the last year they played in Charlotte (and the last time we lost to an SEC team in the regular season). We're 6-1 in Charlotte since then.

No matter the result, I will always be thankful for UGA agreeing to replace Wyoming---that move by the AD's at Clemson & Georgia will define the whole 2021 season for us and I'm forever grateful. Can't wait for this game. Bring on Gameday (of course)!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We haven't lost a game in Charlotte since 2010 postseason,

May 20, 2021, 11:56 AM

we are 5-0 in BOA Stadium since 2014

May 20, 2021, 3:59 PM

Right? I'm confused, maybe I didn't phrase it correctly? I'll try again.

The last time GEORGIA played in Charlotte was a long time ago, and coincidentally also the last SEASON we lost to them or any other SEC team in the regular season. We've played there plenty since then, including mere months ago, so yeah, advantage us. Hope this helps.

Hard to say seems like our O-linemen hit their ceiling early

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 20, 2021, 11:34 AM

"hot and steamy" is right.
I wish we would play more northern teams the first few weeks. They would come South and wilt in the weather. It will give us no advantage over UGA.
This should be a fun game, but I still believe we win going away by 14.

with the lack of depth at QB.

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 20, 2021, 3:25 PM

This will be a tough game; we will have a ton of new players on offense playing for the first time as a unit, and Georgia almost always has a very strong defense. Our defense better be ready. Probably a low scoring game (21-17?)?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 20, 2021, 3:56 PM

What worries me is our secondary. Didn't Ohio State's and LSU's QB's make our secondary look pathetic?
What have we learned from those two losses ?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 20, 2021, 4:04 PM

More to the point, defense is always seemingly at its worst by nature when a season starts. A fast pace from UGA, for example, could deliberately exploit the secondary, albeit keeping a relentless pace (think Ole Miss vs Alabama last year) is new to UGA & difficult to maintain by nature.

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 20, 2021, 7:44 PM

I've always been told defenses are better early in the season. It takes offenses a while to become polished at their plays.

https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/1527002512454544?journalCode=jsea

"Popular wisdom regarding athletics is that offenses are at a relative disadvantage in the early portion of seasons. The authors present evidence that this anecdotal belief holds true over the 2000-2010 National Football League (NFL) seasons. This is reflected in lower offensive yardage, fewer first downs, and fewer points scored. While total points scored are significantly lower in Week 1 of NFL seasons, bookmakers fail to reduce the total lines posted on these games. The authors find a strategy betting under total lines of all Week 1 games over the 2000-2010 NFL seasons yields a statistically significant return of 13.6% per game."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but we're both right

May 21, 2021, 12:17 PM

That's true, but I wasn't disagreeing with that, either, only suggesting that the defense, too, starts out every season with a disadvantage by nature.

Bottom line, I never bet week 1 and it always seems to be filled with the most surprises, win or lose (albeit not for us most years with our typical opener opponents).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

28-24 Clemson

May 21, 2021, 6:32 AM

It will never feel like a close game really but UGA will make it interesting late. That is my prediction. Cant wait!! Go TIGERS!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: As opener against Georgia crawls closer, the news gets better and better

May 21, 2021, 5:48 PM

Quarterback play is always important, but in this game, it's critical. Who can move the chains will determine whether this a close game or which team earns a lopsided victory. I wouldn't place a bet on this matchup. Anyway, go Tigers.
