But you accept that. I don’t. DJ was bad, real bad. He was slow physically and mentally, horribly inaccurate, and made poor decisions. We haven’t had a QB that bad since Will Proctor. No offensive coordinator in the country can make up for him. If Klubnik doesn’t start it will be just like when we kept Deshaun on the bench because they said Cole Stoudt gave us a better chance to win.

Good point...this whole #### website is all about someones opinion and griping about things that are out of your control!...The only reason it is here...it's not really a prayer list or a place to sell your unused tickets or spend time on politics! Enjoy the website, read it for what it is and accept that someone else has an opinion different from yours...if you want to use facts or proof to support your opinion then that's much better...I don't like big cinco cause he's from the left coast is not good supporting evidence!

Actually Cole only problem OC couldn’t coach him. Watson stayed hurt too. Cole had his best game of career bowl game without Morris with 2 new OCs. Morris tried having Cole run Watson. Cole played hurt throughout season finished in bowl rout. I guess you didn’t watch that entire season

flag link

Re: even with Klubnik our QB depth is shaky, is it not?

Jan 3, 2022, 2:25 PM

You are correct. We still need a backup that can start if needed (and pass the ball).

flag link

Re QB depth is shaky ...

Jan 3, 2022, 3:07 PM

The back-up will be either DJ or Klubnik.

Both can start and both can pass the ball. An ideal situation in theory.

The problem is going to be keeping either one of those guys satisfied on the bench.

Having two former 5-star QBs on your team with one being okay with playing back-up is something that usually hasn’t happened even before the transfer portal.

Streeter and Dabo have their work cut out for them.

flag link

Re: Re QB depth is shaky ...

[1]
Jan 3, 2022, 7:26 PM

Uh .. have seen no evidence of one being able to be consistent in throwing the ball accurately, or running/understanding the offense. Handing off the ball to a RB is the best part of his game and not very effective in the passing game.

flag link

Definition of a back-up QB

Jan 4, 2022, 9:50 AM

“A player who is not good enough to start.”

One of our two 5-star QBs will not start.

In this day and time, if a player is not good enough to start for one team, he almost automatically just packs up and leaves for another team where he *is* good enough to start.

If DJ stays at Clemson while losing his starting spot, it will be the best of all situations.

We will not find a better back-up QB than DJ if Cade Klubnik manages to unseat him.

D. Watson was our 37th ranked recruit all time?!? That seems ridiculous as I’d place him top four as far as impactful players in “modern recruiting services” Clemson history. DW4, TL16, CJ28, and CW42.

They are talking about their rank coming in - not their impact. It's how they come out that is important not what people think of them in high school. Where was Renfro ranked coming in? Kirkland? etc. etc. You have no idea what you have until the game starts at a whole new level whether its High School to College or College to NFL.
Its going to be an interesting spring and don't expect a winner to be declared before late August at best.

Re: TNET: As Klubnik arrives on campus, Streeter will have to manage QB battle

Jan 3, 2022, 9:45 AM

At this point, a QB battle is a bit premature. Compared to Texas, high school football in South Carolina is minor league but there is a huge difference between any high school and a major college. If there is competition it would be great because that would only improve our team.

There is not a huge difference between DJ's performance, and a performance good enough to win Texas 6A championships--if at all.

David Hood says DJ finishes 107th out of 110 passers, then precedes to say "a lot of issues can be tied to an injured WR corps and OL issues".

That is seriously pathetic. No Clemson QB should ever finish lower than 65th in the nation. Kelly Bryant is the worst passing QB we've had in a decade and he still finished 59th in 2017 in Passing Efficiency.

Someone mentioned Will Proctor, who was one of the worst QBs we've had in 20 years, and he finished 37th in 2006!

We have just been numbed to the horrible QB play to realize just how bad you have to be to be 107/110.

Re: TNET: As Klubnik arrives on campus, Streeter will have to manage QB battle

[1]
Jan 3, 2022, 10:21 AM

Obviously DJ was not good overall this year but what doesn’t tell the whole story in these ratings are the number of drops his WRs/RBs/TEs had. Also how many 50/50 balls The receivers didn’t make. Of course DW and TL played significantly better but they got a lot more help than DJ. All those drops hurt DJ’s QB rating significantly. I know everyone wants to point the finger at the QB (or O Coordinator) because that’s the easiest target but it’s not that simple.

Of course there will be a QB competition. Nobody knows what either of these two QBs will look like in the fall. Jumping from HS to College isn’t always as smooth as TL, DW or heck even DJ last year filling in.

Clemson dropped more passes this year than they have in the past and the 50/50 balls used to feel like 90/10 balls when Clemson WRs went up for them. There are articles written in Oct where Elliott was quoted he wished he knew how to correct it. You don’t write articles if the drops aren’t alarming. Look at DW and TL highlights…they got a lot of the praise but some of those unbelievable passes were saved by outstanding WR play.

And if the drops continue, it wouldn’t matter if Aaron Rodgers is playing QB…let alone DJ, Klubnik, or whoever else gets under center.

flag link

Re: TNET: As Klubnik arrives on campus, Streeter will have to manage QB battle

Jan 3, 2022, 1:45 PM

I'm not saying the WR's helped but DJ plays a part in a lot of them. Poor timing means the WR might not be ready for the ball. That can be on the WR, DJ, or a combination of both.

As far as 50/50 balls, the reason they become 90/10 is because of where the pass is put. DJ's accuracy makes the back shoulder throws toss ups.

A better line would have made more of a difference in my opinion. Lack of time took away downfield threats, shrinking the field. There were a lot of problems but each one that gets corrected will make the next easier to fix.

Re: TNET: As Klubnik arrives on campus, Streeter will have to manage QB battle

Jan 4, 2022, 9:41 AM

No other teams rely on "50/50" balls as much as Clemson. Bama and Ohio State's WR are wide open.

When's the last time you saw a Clemson WR streaking down the field wide open 5-10 yards ahead of the nearest defender?

flag link

I nor anybody else can really defend DJs performance this yr

[2]
Jan 3, 2022, 10:33 AM

it was NOT GOOD...........However.........

-Our OLINE was pretty close to awful all year (really bad early and made a baby's step worth of improvement as the season went on).........for whatever reason we can NEVER have really good Oline play.......even our 2016 & 2018 Olines weren't that great.

-WR play was horrendous........even in the off chance DJ threw a good pass the WRs dropped them. The lack of separation of our WRs was bad. The talent level of our WR corpse compared to what we're used to (ie 2015-2018) is very concerning...........I believe we lack in talent AND development (maybe losing Jeff Scott hurt much more than expected at the time).

-Since Scott left our offense has missed something, Tony Elliott was not a great coordinator as a stand alone IMO. I think we see that Scott's "Co-role" as OC played a pretty integral part...........I have doubts about Streeter as OC, but here's to hoping he brings back our motions, creativity, tempo, & POINTS of the 2015-2018 era of Clemson football.

as to any "injury excuses".........we were pretty healthy the first 3 games of the season offensively and we were still pretty pathetic on that side of the ball.

flag link

Re: TNET: As Klubnik arrives on campus, Streeter will have to manage QB battle

Jan 3, 2022, 2:59 PM

You don't have a clue what you are talking about...Top state championship in Texas is big time football and this kid can play...this kid can throw strikes (not DJ)...Cade can read a defense and go through progression (not DJ) Cade does not stare down a receiver until it makes your skin crawl! He's quick as a squirrel in your garage and has no concrete shoes! He 'passes' recievers open while DJ throws it past them! Pro style offense was virtually invented by Cades coach and that's where Chad Morris got it! If you can get the UIL channel in Texas watch the title game Austin Westlake vs. Denton and you will see an execution of football in the second half of the game that Clemson has been accustomed to the past 6 years before this one! Bottom 10% of nation and last in the ACC is not a rank for a Clemson quarterback and I don't think Dabo is satisfied as well! Streeter will not have much of a battle to manage and we need several good quarterbacks in our stable! I hate it for DJ because he seems like a nice kid and it will hurt but not as bad as losing to Pittsburg, N.c.State & Georgia!

flag link

This should NOT be a difficult task

Jan 3, 2022, 10:14 AM

I appreciate DJ, and all he has done.

But we CLEARLY need to be more decisive, quicker footed and faster on the trigger. Also NOT as many HIGH balls thrown. Better decisions with shuffle/shuttle passes and pitches.

The Game still needs to slow down for DJ.

Next year should be a TON of Fun with ALL bunches of new players and coaches.

This will be more difficult to navigate than KB2 vs TL16…

[1]
Jan 3, 2022, 11:09 AM

The QB battle between KB2 & TL16 was 6” in front of your face after the GT game in 2018.

I don’t recall KB2’s recruiting ranking, but it was way lower than TL16. That I do know.

Now we have DJ5’s numbers, and they don’t look good. I also agree when Streeter says that early on “we were not good around him”.

So, this is an intangible that makes this tough to manager.

The situation with the KB2/TL16 battle was just about as perfect as it could be with the only variable that changed was KB2 & TL16.

Then the head-2-head comparison of numbers made for an easy choice. BOTH were MOBILE QBs. The play calling could be IDENTICAL, AND the differences materialized QUICKLY in game-2-game evaluation.

CK6 & DJ5 are very different in terms of MOBILITY. The Clemson offense thrives on QB mobility and the zone read. You would think to run with a mobile QB scheme. Given these two QBs, you would clearly call your offense DIFFERENTLY.

Running two (2) different offensive schemes based upon a MOBILE and a NON-MOBILE QB, puts a lot of stress on the OTHER players on the offense having to adjust series to series based on QB mobility.

Some would say the answer is to run the offense you want to run for BOTH QBs, and then evaluate based upon this. This may be unfair to DJ and CK.

In the end, after all of this pontificating, I guess Streeter will have his work cut out for him over the next 10 months.

You guys are right on both sides - it takes a village - BUT clearly our receivers didn't help. You look at the catches that Williams and Leggett made for DW4 and the catches Ross and Higgins made TL16 and then what happened this year. All you had to do was take a peek at the Rose Bowl to see that we don't have anyone that could play at OSU right now at WR.
This is not to defend DJ but rather to say the major culprit was the offense and not a single player.

Great point and DJ has no conception of how to throw a receiver 'open'...he has consistnetly thrown the ball in the wrong spot...that's the reason he can't throw the 50/50 ball...if you don't go through your progression you will never find the right spot anyway...Cade threw 3 50+ balls in the Texas AAAAAA championship game and twice the scorer was a secondary target!

When other players on the team, especially WR's and o-line have to be thrown under the bus to take up for DJ's game-in game-out performance on the field, there is evidently a problem.

DJ had a shot this year with no competition -- his level of play seriously declined in 2021. Klubnik will need to come up to speed with Street's Offense, but Klubnik's mobility, accuracy and ability to audible will quickly change the Offense for the better.

Or with DJ, Clemson can accept continued losses to the NCSU's and Pitt's of the world.

Cade should be starter from day one over DJ. If he or other 2 can outplay Cade move them up. Clemson wasted year after Watson left with Bryant with 2 better QBs on bench. Better QB that DJ transferred out cause didn’t get fair shot. Cole last player to wait his turn backing Boyd.

I remember Johnson, Brice and Cooper as our backups. With a better o line maybe Johnson would have been a better choice but not with an o line that was comparable to this year's. Brice and Cooper were good back ups but neither was better than Bryant in any situation.

Cue Lincoln Riley in DJU's Inbox

Jan 3, 2022, 1:21 PM

Lincoln Riley will be looking to poach DJU from us when Klubnik gets more reps in spring practice. We already know that Riley has been hosting Big Dave and placing these seeds in the Uiagalelei minds. I hope I am wrong because I really want us to keep him on and get Matayo. But we can all see that Klubnik has a huge upside and a ton of potential.

My best case scenario: Something miraculous clicks for DJU and he delivers on the preseason hype and repays Dr. Pepper for their good faith by becoming a Heisman finalist. Then we can bring Cade along smoothly and let him bulk up just a bit, another 15-20 pounds would put my mind at ease. Matayo sees how great Clemson is and the commitment to the players and decides to leave LA.

A guy can dream, hoping this ages well.

I have had it with DJ, one year of his inability to move, react, throw, sorry but he’s got to go!

Unlike DJU, Matayo is definitely playing two positions that he is naturally suited for physically. DJU has talent but the complete inconsistency in his throwing this year has many people revisiting the Tebow as a QB dilemma that probably should have been settled before the draft. We did see earlier this year that he didn't pan out as a tight end either. I'm not saying that DJU needs to change positions but he definitely would benefit from spending more time with a mechanics coach and improving his footwork and pocket presence.

Let's not act like we weren't all thrilled when he started to slide up in the pocket in the bowl game. If he had figured that out in preseason, we don't lose to UGA or NC St and are in the ACC Championship and likely the CFP.

I'm just waiting to find out who Klubnik QBs in the spring game so I know what team color I'm cheering for!

I like how they pointed out Klubnik 24/7 QB rating as compared to Watson and Lawrence, but they rated DJ at a .9949, above where Klubnik is. Sooo, do I hope for a good QB battle, sure, but I can't put all my stock in 247 Sports ratings.

Who rated DJ at 99. anything was smoking wacky weed with big Dave! If you watched football this year and you know dodo about the game you know that DJ is not a D1 QB...he will never start at North Dakota State either...Forget 247 and others...they rated DJ and are crazy! What type of offense do you see DJ as a master of...pick out a receiver...stare him down until he comes open and throw the ball at him as hard as you can with your 'cannon'! If you can honestly blame everyone on the field except DJ then you are going to hurt the whole team for someone that can't QB!

Well, CA is a legal weed state. Someone was hallucinating with the “high” rating.

Let’s all be honest, the offense did improve on the O-Line, the Running Game dramatically improved, as well as increased in production. Wide Receivers/TE’s yes banged up, but with what we had they couldn’t help it that they had a QB who was inaccurate in his passing, could not recognize what the defenses were throwing at him and at the same time change the play up to run a successful play. I have to be blunt honest, if I had been the high school coach and had Coached DJ from day 1 and realized he was slow reflexes, slow thinking, unable to recognition defenses, I would have never made him a QB, WR/TE/DE yes, QB, no way! He lacks the ability period. Clemson got a lemon and are trying hard to make lemonade. It’s not going to work, time to except it, time to move on from DJ.

Kid is playing the wrong sport. Put him on the mound throwing 95 mph fastballs for Monte Lee.

It should be based on which QB moves the team and scores TD's . It is ultimately up to Dabo and he will solve the problem because he has proven he can and will. I don't think anyone can say that we didn't have trouble throwing the ball downfield more than 15 yds consistently. I look at Alabama and Ohio State and they can throw the ball downfield consistently . Results speak for themselves and if we still have the same problems we had this past year we won't make it to the CFP . We can't expect our defense to keep bailing us out game after game because without Brent Venables we may not be able to do it. Whatever happens I'll ALWAYS support my Alma Mater , GO TIGERS!

One thing I think we can all agree on is that Clemson was punished by pollsters media and everyone else for not having a qb..nobody took us seriously after the Georgia debacle and we were still under the gun at the end of the season. Bama can win a Heisman with a half-assed qb . Clemson has to do it better or they can easily forget us.

Let me be the first one to say there will be no QB battle. The new kid will sit a year.
