Just for discussion, how many SEC votes would Clemson need to get in ? GO TIGERS 🐅

Where does the ACC get the extra money? Who gets less? Doesn't that then make them want to leave? Who ever wants less?

I think that the first thing that should be looked at with their eyes and minds of reason wide open and recognize truth of what's really important, and IMO that would be what sport has been the biggest bread winner for the conference, and what schools have been the cash cow within that sport, and trying to do everything possible to bring all of the conference schools together to become better than average in that sport. I could be mistaken, but I think that before the SEC was told they were the strongest FB conference the ACC was a pretty strong FB conference with Tobacco Rd being the strongest basketball schools. But knowing where the biggest money is coming from, the ACC as a whole should want be a strong FB conference along with keeping basketball and baseball at or near the top, problem solved!!!!

We either go to the SEC, if invited, or we have to stay with the ACC and help the league renegotiate!

I think the only viable solutions are to expand and go REALLY big, by trying to go coast-to-coast with big brands like Oregon, Washington, Stanford and Cal, or dissolve the conference.

The ACC doesn’t have that kind of clout. They’d end up losing money trying to run a conference from coast to coast with a boatload of fringe brands. That would be a repeat of trying to create TV revenue by adding schools in NE NFL cities. The ACC was and still remains a basketball conference. It’s well past time to admit that and let it get back to that mission without Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Despite the usual criticism here, that wasn't the goal.

2

May 17, 2023, 9:19 AM

The goal was to be the pre-eminent football conference. And if Miami and Virginia Tech had remained top 10-15 programs, we would have that. Throw in BC, who was a thorn in our side in the mid-00s, and that's a really strong football conference. Florida State, despite a few good years, has been down for a while and not their 90s-early 00s self.

I believe the thought was that Notre Dame would want to join as a football member if the aforementioned programs had maintained their status. That didn't happen, plus college football has changed dramatically in the last 5 years, and here we are.

A rare thing just happened, I agree with you!

The revenue stream has also changed. In the early 00's it was about getting TV markets in new territory for the added cable dollars. Cutting the cord and all the streaming sources have dramatically changed that. Now it's just about pure eyeballs and brands.

It's crazy to think what the ACC could have been if those incoming schools could have maintained their status in football, plus the added benefit of the basketball schools. Unfortunately, while the football has been lacking, we have lost some of the premier bball coaches during that same time. A bit of a double whammy.

I think the ACC as it was has finally come to an end, it's on life support waiting for someone to pull the plug. This is where the football schools and the bball schools part ways.

Dang. I was hoping I would wake up to read Clemson was off to the SEC. If you think an extra $10 million a year contingent on making the CFP is going to keep Clemson competitive in Football against the other top schools your dreaming!

feeling that the athletic directors are just giving packaged responses to the media at this point. Do you really believe FSU and Clemson would be happy with this particular unequal revenue deal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: David, Is it your gut

4

May 17, 2023, 9:42 AM

No one is happy with the current uneven revenue TV deal. All the ADs and ACC Commish want the ACC to be equal with SEC/B1G, or at the very least in the same ballpark (half or less is not going to cut it for the next 15 years). The "good at football" and "elite basketball" schools want weighted revenue sharing because they carry the conference, while the hangers-on all want equal payouts, regardless of their financial contributions to the conference. It's not an easy issue to solve.

And of course they are all giving "packaged responses to the media at this point." ADs are very much political positions, and like the VT AD, Whit Babcock said, "If you come out and say you want to keep your options open, you’re not exactly making friends in the room and with the commissioner." They aren't going to say anything disparaging about the ACC at this point because they can't. They have to toe the company (i.e., conference) line for now until they either find a loophole that lets them out of the current TV contract, or there are backroom conversations and deals formed between enough ACC schools deciding to leave that the ACC is gutted beyond repair, and simply dissolves. I'm not sure if the contract would be negated by dissolving the conference or not; that may have been discussed on here before, but would probably be best answered by a lawyer.

But for now, we are fed nonsensical answers to important questions, like this example from FSU's AD, Michael Alford: "It’s going to take a while, but I don’t think it’s going to take that long. We understand the urgency, our CEOs understand the urgency to take a look at this. I’m very thrilled the CEOs are engaged in this and really examining how we can move this forward." I don't even know what that means ("It's going to take a while, but...it's not going to take that long." Whaaa???)"

Personally, I'd like to see Clemson go to the SEC. I think it would help our recruiting immensely, result in some amazing matchups annually, and is the obvious fit given our geographic location, school history, and traditional recruiting ground.

May 17, 2023, 11:50 AM

It's always said by all the FB announcers that Clemson is a Sec type school in FB that plays an ACC schedule. I see what they saying, but apparently the SEC commissioner don't see us as a SEC type FB program bc they have never offered us a spot in the SEC that I've ever heard about, and they have offered several schools of late without an invite to Clemson....

I was hoping for the same but with the "other" of the 2. That could keep our in-state rivalry interesting as conference v conference in addition to the natural rivalry, IMHO.

Yes it stinks but we signed the long term deal and the Grant of Rights and people thought it was wonderful so live with it.
The real issue in keeping up is NIL which appears unrelated since it is not paid (directly) by the school but If a program does not need booster money for Scholarships and facilities and can tell them just give the player money directly instead of giving it to us, then you've got a problem that impacts the entire University not just a football or basketball team.

Yup. Remember we were mediocre in football for 20 years prior to 2011. These things are cyclical. This is not guaranteed, repeatable revenue which is what is needed to compete with our peers in other leagues.

This sounds just like the things that were said before the deal that “couldn’t be reached” with Texas and Ok was all of a sudden a done deal 7 days later.

No matter what happens, this is good news and will be resolved. It’s not teams slipping out the side door like other realignments - it’s being dealt with head on and out in the open.

The best the ACC can do, then the ACC is a dead man walking. Clemson, FSU, Miami and VT screwed the pooch signing the GOR. Very little foresight on their part. If the media companies required that long of a deal to provide the money we are getting, that should have been a sign the ACC was in trouble and rather than sign a long term deal that barely kept us in spitting distance of the SEC and BIG, they should have been figuring out how to get out of the ACC.

FSU's AD said it well. The ACC has been a great conference, and we want to continue to be great, remembering that we are composed of universities and amateur sports. We do not really want to become semi-pro leagues like the SEC and B1G, but we need to stay competitive. What seemed smart a few years ago now looks foolish and it is time for the league to alter that agreement, and both sides of the aisle should understand that.

What everyone has to keep in mind is you just do not show up at someone's house for dinner. If you expect to eat, you have to be invited and we have heard nothing about any school being invited to the Big10 or the SEC. If UCLA, USC, Oklahoma and Texas are joining their new leagues based on a share they are supposed to get and the current members are happy with those new shares, why in the $%$# would they vote to make the pieces of the pie smaller?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Good point. Of course everyone would know immediately if

any invitations had been extended from the SEC or B1G.

That's the way it has always worked.

I find this very disappointing! The ACC needs to be disbanded. Clemson and the others wanting out have chained themselves to unworthy bottom feeder schools that are not its peer and is it costing millions. Ultimately it is the fault of Clemson administration all of which need to answer for this debacle. Either way the conference needs to disband!

One note... even if the GoR is beaten UNCheat needs to remain tied to this revenue because they, via Swofford acting in his son's interest, caused this mess!
