Did I miss mention of Miles Murphy ?

Aug 22, 2022, 8:01 AM

He's a big reason for optimism on Defense!

Go Tigers!!!

Yes! Myles is a star. Should have mentioned him, but there are too many big time players to mention every one!

It all starts up front and the Tigers have the best DL in the country, so the defense should be salty.
However, the LBs and DBs could be really good, too, so opponents will think the defense has too much salt. Should easily be a top 10 or 5 defense.

You have trotter and bentley mixed up. Trotter is likely

Aug 22, 2022, 9:29 AM

starting MIKE and bentley is backup WILL.

I've been excited about Trotter since his recruitment. He looked like a junior or senior, body wise, when he arrived. You don't hear much about him and he mostly just played special teams last year. Cautiously optimistic on how he'll turn out. If he turns out like dad, he'll be a beast.

I don’t understand…

Aug 22, 2022, 9:32 AM

Sure, we have the talent and experience in personnel to be great. But we have no idea how well our new coaching staff can coach in-game. They didn’t call a great game in the bowl game. But hey, I’m as hopeful as anyone, but to say we’re going to be a #1 defense is slightly naïve.

You didn't think the defense called a good game against Iowa State? They held them to 270 yards and only 4.5 yards per play (keep in mind one or two big plays massively spike an average, their median was obviously much lower.). Iowa State only scored 13 points.

Lots of things that have to be taken into consideration as well, alter the lens so to speak. It was the first game, after a full season with a different DC. It’s hard to tell if we just played safe base packages and stuck to sound fundamentals, or if that is how Wes and Conn will call a regular game. I thought it was well balanced but we did take less risks, especially when we had them backed up against their goal line. BV made a living off sending exotic blitzes and looks down there, Wes seemed to play it more safe but the results were relatively the same, in terms of getting stops. With a full off-season, I think we will see the DC’s put more of their “stamp” on it. It would be a risky ask to change too much after doing things, calling certain plays and coverages that we they would prefer to do vs they way BV called all year. I won’t say it looked vanilla but it did resemble a lot of what Wes has said all off season, simplifying things.

If what we saw in the bowl game is what we get, sign me up, but I anticipate it will be even better once these guys have the defense from day one.

... and Their only TD came after a totally bizarre play when

Aug 22, 2022, 11:42 AM [ in reply to Re: I don’t understand… ]

we intercepted a pass, returned it 20 yards, then fumbled it back to Iowa State to give them a fresh 1st down *and* they got 15 yards tacked on because the official called a ridiculous personal foul on our guy who tipped the pass and inadvertently swatted the passer (a RB, not the QB) with open hands as his arms continued down.

In reality, the score was much closer than it should have been.

Turner Wiggins Bresee Spector out, Skalski out mid-Q2 vs ISU

Aug 22, 2022, 1:14 PM [ in reply to Re: I don’t understand… ]

In fairness, the defense was playing short-handed against Iowa State. Baylon Spector, Nolan Turner, Nate Wiggins, and Brian Bresee missed the game due to injuries. Skalski left the game injured mid-second quarter. I don't think Skalski was even 100% healthy at the start of the game.

And the D would have likely done better if the O had been more effective.

That being said, it's not a sure-thing that Goodwin will be as effective as Venables.

I share your optimism Ryan

Aug 22, 2022, 9:57 AM

These guys will be playing aggressively for themselves, their teammates and Coach Wes. With TD, XT, BB, Mickens and others returned to health, and Simpson and Murphy being potential 1st team AA stars, I see this team being more talented & equally experienced to 2021 squad. Carter and Mukuba also have star potential. Skalski and Spector will no doubt be missed for leadership & vision, but the athleticism and speed of their replacements could easily take the Defense to another level. Go Tigers!

I think this will be the fastest, most athletic defense we have every had. Keep in mind however, instinct and anticipation are just as important and we don't know at what level some of the new guys will be. However, if they are truly freed up to play fast, then look out.

Re: TNET: 2022 Clemson Season Outlook: Defense

Like everyone else, I believe Clemson's defense will be great and possibly the best we have ever had. The depth along the DL gives us the chance to keep everyone fresh and therefore less liable to injury. And I loved your comment about Turner, because it was true. Criminally underrated. I think his brother may be the same.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad you agree about Nolan Turner's overlooked athleticism.

We are 1 shutdown corner from being the best in the land. We should be in the thick of it right
there with Alabama for the best D in the country. I think Sheridan Jones is that guy. Looking forward
to seeing him put it all together his senior year. We have some ultra-talented guys behind him
to push for PT. But I'm of the opinion you have to have at least one shutdown corner that can take away one side of the field. It helps to have a player as talented as Makuba roaming the field in case
a shutdown corner doesn't emerge.
