Tin Cans to be demolished.

Oct 3, 2022, 4:26 PM

Sorry if Germans but haven't seen this on here. An article in the Seneca Journal on Saturday said that Johnstone Hall is going to be torn down next summer. I has the sad since I spent my 4 years at Clemson there. But the one of the bright spots is that 450 football parking spaces are going to be created there.

"With a clearer forecast coming into focus for a top-10 college football matchup tonight, one of Clemson University’s oldest buildings likely won’t be part of the picture a year from now.

Plans to demolish Johnstone Hall, which was built in 1954, remain in the early design stages, but the 'earliest work would begin would likely be next summer,' according to university spokesman Joe Galbraith.

Erected in the mid-1950s, Johnstone Hall is one of Clemson University’s oldest buildings. It is set to be demolished beginning as soon as next summer.
Caleb Gilbert | The Journal
Last October, school trustees signed off on spending $180,000 to design the demolition of Johnstone and the Union complex building — constructed in 1974 — with chief financial officer Rick Petillo saying at the time the latter was 'in poor condition.' Johnstone has been vacant in recent years, but has served as temporary housing, primarily when students needed to be quarantined with COVID-19.

Construction would likely last from July 2023 to June 2024, pending board approval, and last fall’s estimates registered the cost of the project at $12 million. In all, the project would return 132,500 square feet back to greenspace. Officials projected the school would save $1.6 million in annual utility maintenance and security costs in taking Johnston down alone. It would create 450 gameday parking spots and return about 6.7 acres of core campus to student outdoor recreational space, executive vice president of finance and operations Tony Wagner said in April 2021.

'This is a project that will allow us to move a lot of the facilities operations from that high-value core campus real estate,' Wagner said. 'You’ve got almost 7 acres of green space that we could create right in the core campus that would be very advantageous and close to Memorial Stadium.”

C-8 with a view of Fort Hill. I called the Anderson Goodwill one day to arrange delivery of a $10 couch and told the lady on the phone just to park in 'front of the big white mansion'. After I hung up the phone, I realized how privileged that must have sounded to a person working at Goodwill. I remember sunning on the ledge in April (5 stories up, no less) and no thought whatsoever about falling. Even took naps out there. Hard to believe how dumb I was back then...

My emotional attachment is

Oct 3, 2022, 4:42 PM

I can't believe I actually lived in that place.
The thin walls that you could hear everything several doors down.
The caved in walls at the end of the Annex.
The "whatever died" smell of the stairwells.
The showers and bathrooms.
Parking? Gotta be kidding.
The lacrosse player next door bouncing his ball non stop.
Stairway to Heaven playing non-stop.

The list can go on and on.

Bottle rocket battles from the windows overlooking the Quad.
Assembling in the Quad for panty raids.
That smell of wacky tobacky coming down the hall.
Leaning a trash can full of water on your neighbor's door and then knocking.
Assembling a team and flushing all of the toilets when the RA was in the shower.
Heading down the back stairs wearing nothing but a hat and tennis shoes for the nightly Streak.

My sophomore roommate in B had 2 pet boas that he kept in a cage. He sold tickets on feeding day to pay for the mice. One day he came home from class to find one of them missing. We searched all over but never found him. A few months later he came crawling out of the "closet", starving and in search of food.

Good times, good times.

The asbestos was in the ceiling (not good for people like me who 'put up' their beds and knocked some of it off every time we turned over) and the vinyl composition floor tile (and mastic). I believe it was removed back in the 90's, but not sure.

Had a blast with many of the same antics as have already been described in the thread. Haven't see a lot of discussion about the wood bed frames we used to construct and put up in Johnstone Hall rooms - essentially created a second story to your room and doubled your space. It was always fun to watch folks putting these up during move-in day..

From a nostalgia point of view it is sad to see the last of the tin cans go but it is time to relegate them to the past. The whole old Student Union/Harcombe/Loggia area needs serious work and is in dire need of an overhaul. Compared to the rest of campus this area has become and eyesore so it is good that it is getting some much needed attention.

No doors on the toilet stalls and a community shower with about 8-10 shower heads with no partitions. I have mixed feelings about this. I lived in JStone 2011-2012. I was in the Annex, 4th floor. On one hand, being able to walk to the canteen, Harcombe, and the rest of the Union was super nice. Close to the stadium and Fike as well.

On the other, the place was a friggin pigsty. Always a mess of food, bodily fluids, and trash in the stairwells. That being said, I did have some good times with guys in both the annex and main.

It sucked having a car because you either had to park by Kite Hill, or play chicken during Gameday weekends with the tow trucks out at the resident lots behind the stadium.
