Time and Circumstances: The Fickleness of Both.

Nowhere is the effect of Time and Circumstance more blatantly illustrated than in the NFL Draft just completed. Another poster already said, as I did as well, how your overall team performs has a HUGE effect on your draft status. The Dawgs finally win a Natty, and suddenly FIFTEEN PLAYERS get drafted, a seven round record. Were they suddenly that much better? I would argue not. We slugged it out with them without the benefit of a QB.
Pointing out two examples on our team, opposite ends of the spectrum.
Justyn Ross: After the Bama Beatdown in 2018, pro teams would have creamed themselves to draft him in the first round, had he been eligible. Fast forward to now, after the medical issues, and pedestrian final year due to circumstances largely beyond his control (a REALLY substandard QB performance), and he goes UNDRAFTED. And, with teams being apparently really wary of his future due to medical concerns, he may even have a hard time making a team as a UDFA.
Baylon Spector: After toiling in almost obscurity for his entire time at Clemson, he shows some surprisingly athletic numbers at the NFL Combine, and DOES get drafted, albeit a late round selection. Meanwhile, his "running mate" Jamie Skalski, who I would argue has a better resume, not only didn't get drafted, he didn't even GET a Combine invite, which is pretty much the kiss of death as far as getting drafted.
Time and Circumstances: The NFL Draft results should be a cautionary tale for all these guys jumping willingly into the Transfer Portal. It is hard, DAMMED hard, to make it to the NFL, even if you are a STAR on a good team. Most better have that college degree as a backup plan, because the NFL is NOT in their future. And, with exception of those who become star players, the career span for fringe players if they MAKE it in the league is only a few short years. Then, there is a LONG stretch of years ahead where there has to be some sort of income to keep them and their families whole, beyond football.
NIL is only going to further murk up the waters going forward. Some of these highly rated prospects get money dumped on them, and they think it will always be this way. What a cruel awakening awaits most of them when their time in the college sunshine is through, and the reality of the real world beyond football slaps them upside the head.

Excellent post. Very few of the young men who play college football make it to the NFL. Most move on with their lives without football. Some do good, other don't. But, that life in the real world. Go Tigers.

Definitely, spot on. And getting worse with NIL and transfer tampering. You have pos coaches like jumbo fisher and kerby smartas$ along with their assistants telling these kids they're going to the NFL or can make a lot of NIL money etc etc.
Throw in the players on those teams along with analysts like esecpn propping up these coaches words and the kids along with the parents buy into it.
At least we have Dabo and his assistants trying to steer these kids in the right direction. I have to put faith that in the end, good will win out.

Dittos! To follow this to a logical conclusion, if we have a stellar year next year and make it to the play-offs we should have 5 or 6 DL/DEs drafted, a couple of LBs, a DB or two, and a couple of offensive players.
