Monte has averaged 42 wins in 5 years

Mar 13, 2021, 3:13 PM

That’s pretty dang good. He was on pace to exceed that last year going 14-3. Way too many little league dads on here.

And no, I don’t expect much from most people on TigerNet. And amazingly, I’m still frequently disappointed.

What about your daddy Brownell? Didn’t even make the NIT five times. You’re talking about postseason LOL LOL LOL

LOL at you bringing up basketball.

It’s pretty obvious that even our lowly basketball team is having a much better season than baseball.

Omaha. When was the last time Clemson got swept in Chapel Hill, which I predicted after the USC-Upstate debacle?

Since you’re the new guy who knows so much about college baseball why not let everyone know how many CWS Vanderbilt had ever played in, much less won, before Corbin. It’s zero for the record. And only 2 SR ever before that. They’ve been playing baseball at Vanderbilt since 1904. Trying to compare the two is absurd.

Not an expert but dont have to be. Team cant hit! That's on him! When he accepted the job making that kind of money he had to know the expectations. He is not meeting expectations. That means you get fired in any job!!

You may want to check your facts. Corbin took them to a super regional his 2nd year. Vandys history b4 that was playing in 2 regionals. Had losing. Record for 8 of previous 10 years. They didn't give a rat about baseball. So until Corbin got there, they were worse history in baseball than Clemson history in basketball.

Coaching matters.

Coaching certainly matters and so do extra “scholarships”

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Check your reading comprehension

Mar 13, 2021, 10:04 PM

Yes they do. However it wasn't that big a deal when Corbin took over a losing program. The scholly changes didn't take place until 2011? 2012. And certainly the oos money drying up in 2015 hasn't helped either.

But beyond the private schools, other schools are getting it done. We've won games. Enough to make a regional or even host one. The most important thing I look at with montes tenure. His record vs top 20 teams (that finish top 20) has been dismal. Beyond the first 2 seasons, we really have been competitive in those games. We don't hit good pitchers, and what's supposed to be our best get shelled.

Law of averages says your ace pitcher goes 8, maybe 9 games every now and then. We've had that happen maybe 3 times in the last 4 years. I like Monte. Really had confidence he'd have us humming by now... But it's those little things that have added up to get me frustrated.

JFC - you’re one of those who is going to weigh in but actually doesn’t know what the hell you’re even talking about. The rules, as they affect Vanderbilt versus Clemson, are completely and totally unchanged. Schools, all schools, have the right to offer whatever economic grant in aid they see fit. Vanderbilt, like a lot of other schools, offers reduced tuition based on your FAFSA application. Clemson has every opportunity to do the same. This is a completely bull****, crybaby way of addressing the state of our baseball program. It didn’t help Vanderbilt baseball for the 100 years before Corbin showed up and isn’t hurting our men’s soccer program now despite the exact same disadvantage existing. Coaching matters. The 2009 scholarship distribution change is another red herring. The number of scholarships is unchanged. You just can’t offer .1 scholarship to 117 players anymore.

It’s ok to be wrong. I’m giving you an opportunity to educate yourself before you make an a** of yourself. Too late?

“The schools with the bigger endowments will see some more help,” Rogers said. “The private schools will benefit a bit more, like some do now.”

Corbin said. “Does it hurt us? Yeah, because we don’t get every kid we want. But you also understand, it is an advantage for us, there is no doubt.”

“People that had this idea that this is going to hurt Vandy or even the playing field are sadly mistaken,” Rogers said. “Vandy now has another avenue to bolster the scholarships and a guy could essentially be a walk-on getting a full ride. If anything, it helps schools like Vanderbilt.”

Re: Little man...chew on this.

You were wetting your pants about extra “scholarships” which this article has nothing to do with. That’s crying about Vanderbilt’s ability to give tuition reduction to athletes. It’s been hashed out over and over on here. I also specifically referenced the 2009 rules change not the 2020 changes that have had no significant effect on this season. Keep trying though.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Has everything to do with extra “scholarships”

Mar 14, 2021, 12:12 PM

Try again and read slower. Also look further into Opportunity Vanderbilt started in 2008. Corbin notes it gives them an advantage. Is he wrong on this issue? To say Vandy doesn’t have a competitive advantage is inaccurate. Let’s see...terrible program until this started in 2008. Coincidence? You can still dislike Monte and realize the inequality in college baseball.

Re: Has everything to do with extra “scholarships”

Mar 14, 2021, 1:25 PM

It’s not an inequality in baseball. It’s an inequality across all ncaa men’s partial scholarship sports between schools with income based financial aid and schools without it. It’s a prioritization. It might be an advantage but it’s not some shady back door practice or under the table booster. It certainly isn’t a “scholarship”. Corbin knows how to use it to his advantage. We just only care about Vanderbilt and baseball because it’s become a convenient boogie man.

I am paywalled from the article you posted but from other articles I read it was a one-time rule change for next season due to covid. It offers blanket eligibility and eases the 2009 scholarship restrictions. Most people were complaining that the 2009 rules favored small programs and were disadvantageous to larger programs. I personally always found it hard to believe that anyone was making any decision based on a 1 or 2 percent scholarship but this moves back to towards the older standard. It still doesn’t give any one school more scholarships than another. Everyone has 11.7.

Maybe I’m overreacting and sorry for over-personalizing things. But you are putting up arguments mostly being used by others to say that this is just how it’s going to be now, Monte’s as good as it gets, and Clemson can just never compete in the new college baseball landscape. After the vitriol directed at Jack, I find that an abhorrent state of mind to accept for this program. Apologies if I’ve mistakenly projected that onto you.
