TiGERS..MAY is Mental Health Awareness month!

We in America (and the World) are needing to treat mental health with more respect & seriousness.
Saying, one's physical health check-ups & frequent care are not matters that carry a stigma or are a taboo-like blotch on your record or being by your family or peers..
yet needing mental health check-ups and care do cause one to be most aware of the consequences to their reputation within society as well as at their workplace..
since a medical record of being treated at a mental facility for any disease (like being Bi-polar or ADHD or worse) can cause one to be labeled as luny or crazy..
thus all of us are Leary of the stigma it would cause us, a family member, friend, neighbor, fellow worker or classmate if we saw mental illness and reported it to others or to proper medical authorities.
Saying..we have to want, demand & strive for people to have emotional and mental health issues cared for in the same compassionate & accepted way as we do for physical health needs.
It's way past time!!
PS: If mankind could stop spending trillions on wars and on stupid political campaigns, etc then those $ could be allotted for mental health as well as physical health needs.

Well stated my friend. Perhaps the most underrated post this year.
I was so very proud of our softball team for showing their love and caring by wearing the green ribbons. Understanding they lost a sister to suicide in the girl from jmu. Most, if not all the ACC teams displayed the awareness. Dissapointed that none of our regional teams, nor osu cowgirls carried the mantra.

Mental illness is real and I have seen family members suffer from it . People who really have this problem seek help most of the time .
The problem today is that people use this as an excuse after they do something bad .
Mental illness has always been here , now it’s an
excuse to be evil.

Don't know about other states but South Carolina emptied all of their state mental health facilities (William S. Hall institute in Columbia being the biggie) some 40 years ago and shut them all down. This put those patients on the streets or with relatives. If they had no one to monitor their medication, they were prone to violence to themselves or others. Wonder if this is what is going on across the nation, improper medication regimen ?

"Mental health issues" is such a broad term. Like cancer...if an acquaintance has a skin cancer that is caught early, you have a different feeling for them than if they tell you they were just diagnosed with end-stage colon cancer. Likewise, if someone loses a loved one and sees a therapist once a week for 3-4 months, society will, for the most part, not deem that person ' looney/crazy'; but, if a person is dealing with psychoses, severe bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and taking heavy narcotics to function, then that person will be viewed MUCH differently...including being labeled "crazy." I won't get into whether that's fair or not...just think it's an expected reaction from society at large.

Any term which accurately describes a negative condition will eventually be considered a slur. And people will try to stop people from using that term.
Is it wrong to “label” someone as “crazy” when they are, in fact, crazy?

True. On a similar front, I remember when people who were mentally disabled were "mentally retarded", or "retarded." In and of itself, it was not a slur. At some point, as you indicated, it was deemed "offensive", or at least "insensitive." We started using "special" and "challenged" and probably other euphemisms. And these words are now viewd as "retarded" was. When I was much younger, I remember a friend of mine being called 'Special Ed' because he had committed some social screw-up and was getting ragged for it. He didn't...have any issues...but the the purpose of the comment was obviously to jab him.

The real question is why do we feel the need to "label" people at all? In a Mental Health facility, you are given a specific diagnosis for treatment. Why do we feel the need to "slur" people? And the words have no real meaning. i.e. Define "crazy" for us!

Most Americans can afford mental care. They cant even afford rehab if the don't have insurance. Also, many insurance plans don't cover mental issues and they even consider alcohol and drug issues mental issues and they won't cover it.

insurance has devolved in many respects otherwise. My company offers EAP, but that only goes so far.

Most don't cover rehab or psychiatrists. I just looked into it for a member of my family 2 weeks ago. Our insurance would not cover those costs and we have insurance. No mental or addiction issues. They are considered one in the same. Ii guess depends how much money you can afford for insurance or if they can it will be insurance that wont cover those issues.N Not covered. I searched high and low. Most Americans can't afford the insurance that will cover that stuff. Mental health awareness is a sham got most of America.

I'll begin by saying I'm not supposed to be on this planet now. In June of 2011 I underwent 22 hours of continuous surgery for cancer and wasn't supposed to make it out of MUSC (I actually did flat line). I was never afraid of dying and still not. The thing that almost drove me insane was how my wife and kids were going to be taken care of. I can't tell you how many times I cried alone and tried to be a tough guy. I never told anyone at the time but I should have. I'm here now and everything is cool but this problem is real boys and girls!

I have some experience in dealing with this.
The stigma piece - directly related to “head stuffed in the sand ignorance”.
Absolutely no one would ever choose to have to deal with mental illness. You will see all kinds of family members apologize where mental illness is concerned. You will never see anyone apologize for getting the flu.
No apology necessary, how can I help?
I call “mental illness”, the “loneliest disease”. Because when it comes calling, you are on your own. I’ve seen it from Dr’s, neighbors, co-workers, church folk, you name it.
It’s also extremely tough to work through treatment……”let’s throw these darts and see if it works”. Absolutely excruciating.
