Was our 2016 OL actually good?

Mar 21, 2022, 8:30 AM

I thought DW4's mobility really masked a lot of issues on the line that season. We struggled to run the ball quite a bit compared to 2015 as the team average YPC fell from 4.9 to 4.3.

Not that's it's particularly relevant, but I've always felt like 2015 and 2018 were the best lines.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

15-16 was the last time we had a hard nosed run game

Mar 21, 2022, 11:49 AM

We weren't exactly blowing people off the ball, but we could consistently run Gallman for 4 yards and punish a defense. They got warmed up and had a great game against Bama in the 4th quarter. (2015 team) There was a major drop off in 16 run blocking. That's when we started to rely on QB runs too much.

our scheme has hindered our run blocking in the past imo. There are a lot situations where we need to get down in a stance and fire off the ball. I think Streeter understands that, I'm relieved we are going under center, FINALLY. We need quick hitting run plays, not just slow developing meshes with reads involved. The offense has the advantage of knowing what is going to happen before the snap.

Let's do things that make our OL look good, let's not make their job any harder than it already is. I think that is step 1 in getting more OL into the league. Our DL is the perfect example..

I really don't think we've had a great OL since Danny Ford was our coach. Some better than others, some pretty awful, but none great. JMO, and I keep hoping to see us with a world class OL. All of us will be astounded at the difference on the field and attaining stellar performance as a team with a great OL.

Re: Was our 2016 OL actually good?

Mar 21, 2022, 1:41 PM

Well, to be fair…those OL’s in the 80’s didn’t have to worry about pass pro…pretty much just needed to know which direction the pitch or handoff was going.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, they were excellent!

Mar 21, 2022, 12:03 PM [ in reply to Was our 2016 OL actually good? ]

Mitch Hyatt (LT), Jay Guillermo (C) and Tyrone Crowder (RG) all earned 1st Team All-ACC honors in 2016. Taylor Hearn and Jake Fruhmorgan were serviceable, but not outstanding. Two freshmen played key roles in backing up Hearn and Fruhmorgan: Traymane Anchrum and John Simpson were outstanding in rotation.

So, I'd give the 2016 OL a solid A. 3 of the 5 starters were First Team All-ACC and it doesn't get much better than that.

To be sure, DW4 made that OL better due to his mobility. But, I'd take that 2016 OL every year if I could.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not saying you are wrong but the media

Mar 21, 2022, 3:07 PM

has no idea how to grade offensive linemen. It's not like most other positions that are either more easily quantifiable or easier to distinguish good/bad play even for those with more untrained eyes.

Mitch Hyatt was a 3x All-ACC player and 2018 AA that went undrafted and never played a down in the NFL. I'm not saying he was a bad college player by any means, but a player at just about any other position with those same credentials would've been drafted and probably drafted highly.

We have all the talent we need on o line now? Really?

Anyone want to take odds we see another underperforming season out of the o-line?

only people on the inside know why we struggled on O last yr

Mar 21, 2022, 9:08 AM

huh? All year? People just ran the wrong routes and missed blocks all year? No one could correct it? Listen I hope DJ comes out and throws 15 TDs in his first 3 games but I'm getting a little tired of this mysterious reason why our offense suckt all year last year. So i assume this bugaboo is gone now and we're back to firing on all cylinders? I guess we'll see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: only people on the inside know why we struggled on O last yr

Mar 21, 2022, 12:52 PM

Our top WRs last year included:

Justyn Ross who appeared to give less than 100% effort on numerous occasions for one reason or another.

The rest of the list was made of true freshmen, Beaux Collins and Decari Collins, not because they were outstanding but because they were available for 13 games.

The rest of the list included:

Ngata excelled at getting open but had drop issues and then injury ended his season.

Ladson was injured and never a factor.

Ajou was horrible in every way possible.

Spector never saw the field.

Stellato never saw the field due to injury.

This is just the highlights from one of the position groups on an offense that had a similar story at every position group.

Nobody is saying that DJ should not shoulder any of the blame, but anybody still pretending that everyone around DJ was amazing and he let them all down is seriously misguided.

Re: only people on the inside know why we struggled on O last yr

Mar 21, 2022, 6:31 PM

I think all of that is true. But on the other side, a lot of people wanted to blame those others and defend DJ. There was still a lot of talent there at receiver and the offensive line was improved over 2019. Despite that, DJ had the worst season statistically in Clemson history and was the second worst quarterback in the entire country. You can say they had issues, but you'd imagine a bunch of blue chips at 50% effort/production would still be better than all those G5 teams. And despite what people insisted, DJ did NOT improve as the year went on. He actually got worse statistically in the back half of the season. I don't know what happened there with him, but we didn't have one of the worst Clemson offenses ever. There's a lot of blame to go around. The entire offense was horrible (the offensive line was still bad, though improved from 2019). The receivers were terrible. The running backs were okay but not great (I think Mafah and Pace were best but they insisted on Shipley). And DJ was historically terrible. And the playcalling was horrible with Elliott and Streeter, who turns everything he touches into crap.

Mar 21, 2022, 1:03 PM [ in reply to only people on the inside know why we struggled on O last yr ]

Couldn’t agree more. Sure DJ was not the only reason for the O woes but, let’s stop pretending it was entirely out of his control…for 13 games. Trevor’s feet were held to the fire when he had bad games. Watson was rightfully criticized for his rash of interceptions. I can’t figure out why some keep insisting on coddling DJ. Every fan WANTS DJ to succeed, including those that are willing to point out the huge gaps in his game.

Clemson is 89-10 over the past 7 seasons. Your argument is not only weak, it makes you look like a crybaby whiner.
Fine, don't buy it, please give me your tickets.

know there have to be some. Never as good as it sounds, or bad for that matter. Dont have any tickets to give. Priced out a long time ago. Paid for my 3 daughters to get a Clemson degree though (priorities I guess).

Not true again, they do discuss negatives or lack of depth. Happens all the time, you just seem to miss it.
Congrats on the daughter's degrees. I hope they do well in everything they do.

I don't have anything to back it up, but I think he would have been playing QB by season's end last year if not for the injury. Dabo was really thrilled with the young fella.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Spring Break: What we've learned about Clemson's offense through nine practices

Mar 21, 2022, 3:31 PM

The plan all along was for him to provide QB depth early in his career and transition to full-time WR later. I don't think we'll need the depth at this point, so expect to see him exclusively as WR/returner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Spring Break: What we've learned about Clemson's offense through nine practices

Mar 21, 2022, 3:34 PM

That was the plan, so they say, but with the QB struggling last year and trying to run the ball better, I feel like he would have played QB instead of Taison Pharmaceutical. They tried to run him, but he wasn't as quick and dangerous as Will Taylor would have been.
Again, I have nothing to back it up, just a feeling.
He should be a threat at WR for us next season.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Spring Break: What we've learned about Clemson's offense through nine practices

Mar 21, 2022, 10:00 AM

The important thing to remember is no full-time QB in history has ever completed every pass and Klubnik will play when he is ready not when DJ misses his 1st receiver. If our line and receivers improve, we will be good, if not, no QB can make the difference.

Does anyone remember me saying that I was the electrical foreman on an addition at Grayson HS and hearing comparisons between Mafah and a fire hydrant? There was a reason ESPN was there for a lot of his games.

Plenty of great/Heisman-level QBs have played on crappy teams with average OL. Clemson has never had a great OL in the Dabo Swinney-era, but we've had the QB (and skill players) to overcome it. But our WR productivity has fallen off a cliff the last 2 years as has our QB talent.

so that former player

Mar 21, 2022, 11:52 AM

blamed everything for dj's troubles but dj himself...guess my eyes were lying when i watched him be a statue in the pocket and miss wide open wrs by a mile last year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: so that former player

Mar 21, 2022, 12:58 PM

DJ deserves some of the blame for sure, but if you know anything about football then you would know that a timing route where the WR runs the wrong route is going to have the ball flying far away from the intended target.

If a WR is meant to break right and instead breaks left, they might be wide open but the ball isn't going to be close to them.

If a WR runs a crossing route short over the middle instead of a post route and the QB has to get the ball over the LBs' heads then the ball is going to look like it is way overthrown to the underneath WR.

It's already been stated by coaches that Ajou had no clue what he was doing because he never bothered to learn what to do.

It's not too farfetched to imagine that true freshman WRs would also struggle to be exact with their route running and knowledge of what to do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: so that former player

Mar 21, 2022, 3:35 PM

Great post. Joe Fan doesn't even know that WRs have reads, too.

Re: TNET: Spring Break: What we've learned about Clemson's offense through nine practices

Mar 21, 2022, 11:57 AM

Listen, I enjoy hearing about how great everyone looks as much as the next guy but it should be obvious by now that you can't really believe anything you read when it comes to these practice reports. I mean, nobody said it looked like we were headed for a historically bad year on offense at any point prior to the season did they? In fact, if you went back and read these same reports from last spring I'd bet it was a bunch of similar cheerleading about how amazing everyone looks. Nothing wrong with that as long as you take it with a big old grain of salt.

I love propganda as much as the next guy comrade, but:
-I guess you have to be a former offensive player to know exactly why DJ would rifle the ball to a WR from 4 yards away on screens. Or the ball would generally be at their feet or 8 feet overhead when passing beyond 10 yards. Seems legit. But hey, DJ looks great in practice though.
BTW, for those who love to talk about him as a freshman, you REALLY should go back and watch BC and ND. And then realize how valuable Etienne, Powell and Rodgers were. Also in the replay section. Part of it he was hurt from a QB run early in the season, but he legit couldn't hit a battleship throwing this left. I like DJ a LOT and pulling for him, but it's show time.

-Ngata looks great (Year 4 of hearing this)

-Stiletto Injured/ Spector hurt

-O line playing better.

All in all this sounds great, and we are spoiled to some degree, but the topics I highlighted are like rinse, lather, repeat last few seasons.

It is time for a number of players on this team to play up to all of the hype of their recruitment this coming season!!!! The handwriting should be on the wall!!!! Our reaching the final four is dependent on this from every player!!!!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hate to see that line in a story where "the promise has

been made that the best players will play."

That ought to ALWAYS be the case, and should not need to be verbalized. It should go without saying. Period. Butt, we've all seen enough of the real world to know that the best do not always get justly rewarded for their efforts. Favoritism, politics, Daddy's money, or whatever other unjust reason do rear their uglee heads.

If it happens in your sports program, you are dead. Whatever else you want to say about 18-22 year olds, they have some pretty sharp BS meters.
