Three recruitment questions:

|
1. Former Clemson great, Don King, who passed away in February 2013, did not attend Clemson on scholarship. Knowing that Coach Howard had very few scholarships to award and that his father, a physician I believe, could afford the tuition, King paid his way through Clemson. I think this information is correct. That being the case, under today's NCAA rules would King be considered a walk-on?
2. Can partial scholarships be awarded as in baseball? Suppose two recruits were excellent students and had academic scholarships in excess of half the cost of attendance. Could Clemson award them each half a football scholarship and count it as only one in the total of eighty-five?
3. At this time every year I see that some schools, primarily the big powers, are prepared to sign 32-35 recruits. I believe that the 25/85 rule is still in existence. Has any program ever been punished for having more than 85 football players on scholarship or for signing and assigning more than 25 to a specific year? If so, it escapes my 73 year-old memory.

Yes, that guy would be considered a walk-on.
You can get partial scholarships in baseball, but not in football. You can't mix and match. However, if a person got a scholarship for say basketball, they could also play other sports. A good example would be Bruce Ellington who went to USCjr on a basketball schollie, but was a star for the football team.
I have not heard about anyone getting punished for over signing. But there are loop holes. First, there is a high attrition rate, especially in the SEC. If a guy doesn't get to start, he'll transfer. Also, a lot of those guys get in trouble for petty crimes and such and have to transfer. See UGA last year. Also, a lot of SEC teams have a ton of guys who leave early for the NFL which also frees up room. Another loop hole is if they are early enrollees or gray-shirts, the scholarships count for either the previous year (early enrollees) or the next year (grey shirts) So, that is a loop hole also.
I hope that helps.

When Coach Ford began getting kickers from the soccer team, didn't he split the scholarship 1/2 and 1/2? But didn't they change the rule on that? Otherwise some schools would "hide" football players on other teams. Go Tigers!!

if a kid played multiple sports and one was football, then football had to carry his full scholarship.
This (I was told) was to prevent "hiding" football players in other sports.

That's the way I understand it is now. Makes sense as schools could have 12 quarterbacks on the rowing team! Go Tigers!!

Question #2
Jan 15, 2015, 8:50 PM
|
|
As it was explained to me, if a student athlete for football receives an athletic scholarship it must count as a full scholarship toward the teams total. A friends son had the value of his academic scholarships added to his account. He is a brilliant young man and I don't know if it works that way for all academic scholarships. Hope this helps. Go Tigers!!

We signed 29 in 2011. I think as long as your not over 85 you are good.
