Thoughts on NIL and transfer portal.

May 11, 2021, 8:25 AM

(I posted this on my FSU board. Thought I would post it here and compare any responses.)

It is the perfect storm. Starting in July of this year, in some states players will legally be allowed to profit from their NIL. NCAA will lag way behind, as usual, in how they set up guidelines and then investigate schools that are ignoring whatever guidelines they put in. And, NCAA has already given the go ahead for players to transfer for any reason and not sit out a season.

Tennessee's best player, Linebacker To'o To'o announced he is transferring to Bama. Why not? He can play for a national championship, improve his draft stock in the NFL, have a whole lot more fun on the field (winning is more fun than losing) and make more money off his NIL.

I predict that the landscape of recruiting is about to change - BIG TIME. I don't know the specifics of how it will work out. I'm sure the coaches don't know exactly how it will work out either. But, those coaches who prepare and adapt and adjust the quickest will benefit the most.

Coaches will not only have an infrastructure of scout9ing an recruiting HS players. They will also have an infrastructure tasked with scouting and recruiting transfers. And, they will also have an infrastructure tasked with assisting players with NIL contracts. These 3 departments will work together, obviously, but they will be 3 different departments. Three different people will hire three different staffs to work for them.

Prediction: Alabama and Clemson will lead the pack in adapting the quickest. The rest of the NCAA will be playing catch up.

Both schools have already begun the process. Saban is well known for his infrastructure and his attention to detail. He's the guy who started hiring big name coaches as "consultants" and assistants in his now famous "rehabilitation program." Dabo has spoken strongly in the past about not using the portal. But, he has already hired an off field "consultant" who is in charge of "evaluating" the transfer portal.

Both those guys will quickly, I'm sure they have already started, assembling a staff to help kids with NIL contracts. And I mean this in a positive way. They will do it to help the kid maximize his earnings, but also to protect him, and the school, from nefarious agents and others who will be all over the kids with "under the table" offers.

I don't know which schools will be the quickest beneficiaries, other than Clemson and Bama. But, those who don't adjust - those who are waiting to see how this will work out and then get on the train - those who follow, not lead - will soon be left in the dust.

Guys who are probably ready to benefit quickly would, I would guess, include Jimbo Fisher, Dan Mullen, Ryan Day, Kirby Smart. They are at schools that have the money and the system to hit the ground running. (Yes, the rich get richer.)

I hope Norvell has the administration around him that will quickly get involved. If not, his job is going to be even harder than it is now.

If there are not some VERY strict anti-tampering rules put

in place early on, Nick Saban will raid the best players off everybody else's roster that he can. Why wouldn't he? The lure of having MANY players drafted in every NFL draft will be hard to resist, if there are no tampering rules to prevent him talking to opposing players about coming to Bama.
