Thomas G. Clemson’s will

Jun 8, 2020, 11:39 PM

Since our former football players are voicing their opinions about Tillman and Calhoun, I decoded to do a little research. When I googled Thomas G. Clemson, a copy of his will was there. So I read it. I did not know that the university has seven successor members on the 13 member board. One of the successor members is from Tillman. Also, the name Clemson is designated as part of the school’s name. So when the state of SC accepted the land for the school, there were , and continue to be, strings attached. No one is mentioning the fact that ,unlike some southern schools like Vanderbilt, Clemson did not ban women and blacks from attending his new school. Let’s face it. We are in the crosshairs because of the success of the football program. Where is the outrage over the Tillman name on Winthrop’s campus???

Winthrop had a blow up about it a few years back. Decided they couldn’t do anything because of the state law saying 3/4 of the legislature has to agree.....

As for the will, there are laws that say provisions that are against public policy can be ignored later. For example, if you gave Clemson money for a scholarship fund and said in your will “it can only be used for the white kids” then that provision can be ignored.
