I have even seen people park in a handicap space after helping someone in a wheelchair get out where you can load and unload. And then the healthy family member will take the car drive it over and park in a handicap space when they could’ve parked anywhere because they’re not actually using the handicap space to get in and out the car.
And the arrogance and attitude when you confront these people (and they see that I am in a wheelchair) is astonishing.
The main reason you need a handicap space is because a regular parking space is very narrow. You need that extra space to get a wheelchair in and out of a car or to allow a lift to open and close on a van.
I often have to double park because of people abusing handicap spaces. I need that extra space to open my door and get my wheelchair in and out the car. You can’t come close to doing that in a normal parking space.

that just because a healthy family member left a wheelchair bound person out front of the building, that doesn’t mean they won’t be taking that person back to the vehicle (in the parking spot) after the appointment?
Also, there are “completely healthy looking” individuals who have disabilities that necessitate close parking. I was one of them at various points in my life. I recommend not coming to conclusions unless you absolutely know the full details of someone else’s situation.
People need to have a little more empathy instead of immediately going to anger.

People have the placards that do not need them. I’ve seen kids parking in those spots. Pay attention next time you are out and I’m sure you will see what the OP is talking about. Been that way for years. To say everyone that has a placard has an issue is just not the case.

I’m handicapped and in a wheelchair and I see people abusing it every day. You can tell if someone is young and healthy and abusing it. It’s almost impossible to find handicap parking spaces because of the abuse and the only reason I need it is when you have a wheelchair you need that wider space to open the door to get the wheelchair in an out. For me it’s not about being closer to the building. I don’t care about that. But I’m often forced to double park because I need the extra space to get my wheelchair in and out the car. if you’re not using a wheelchair or a walker etc. you can park a few spaces over and walk a few extra feet.

But trust me, I have seen people abuse it even when the Handicap family member is with them. They will let the family member out in a loading zone or at the front door then drive around and park in the handicap space and get out and walk back to the family member. That is beyond dumb. if you’re going to get someone out in a loading zone, you don’t need the handicap space. Park in a regular parking space. You wouldn’t believe how many times I have seen that. Because most hospitals and doctors offices, medical buildings, they have a spot for getting people in and out close to the front door. I’m totally independent so I need that wider space to get my chair in and out the car. When it’s an older person or someone that can’t get around by themselves and the family member uses the loading zone it makes absolutely zero sense for them to then go park in a handicap space. They can park the car in any parking space. But they will park in a handicap space if it’s available because they’re lazy and it’s closer.
It’s especially bad anytime you are going to a doctors office or hospital. It gets abused in places like that more than anywhere else.

I live in Tryon, NC (Polk County) where there are plenty of old folks, but at any time, almost all of the handicap spots are open. We also put our buggies back at the grocery and you rarely see litter. It's a mindset and that's why we retired here.

Its happening more often and also people are parking in front of businesses instead of using parking spots. Most are younger people and they seem to challenge someone saying something. I would love to call them out but everyone seems to packing these days. Maybe flattening a tire would be good payback.

I'm with you. I've seen many that could use the exercise walking from the regular parking spaces. They walk from the handicap spaces and then sit on an electric cart in the store with no casts or signs of injury. Shoot me but being too lazy to walk is not a handicap.
There are legit handicap people and/or temporarily injured people that really need the spaces but often cant find them. I believe some doctors enable them by giving them the mirror placard.
The doctors gave me a temporary handicap tag after I had a wreck but I didn't use it because I needed to get back to normal, not coddled.

I did the same before I actually became disabled. I had a broken foot, and I had one of those temp placards but never once used it. There are too many older people out there that need those very limited spots more than I did. I actually got around pretty good on a set of crutches....

Worry about yourself. Several veterans I know have a limiting handicap that isn’t always visible. I avoid using them because of A holes like you that think they know what’s up by looking at someone for 5 seconds.

Im sure you see this, a handicap person parks in a handicap spot, they stay in the vehicle while a totally heathy person goes in the store, while the handicap person sits there and waits on them. That is total abuse of the privilege!!!!

I would’ve played football and ran track at Clemson in the 80s had it not been for a car accident in high school. I was the first person to be a full-time student at Clemson living on campus in a wheelchair. That was 1984. I know when it’s being abused. I see it all the time.
I don’t really care about parking in a handicap space because I don’t mind pushing a little bit farther but unfortunately regular parking spaces are very narrow and it doesn’t give enough room to open your car door and get the wheelchair in and out the car. I often end up having to double park or park a long ways from the door so that I can park next to a tree or a sidewalk so no one parks so close to me that I can’t get my car door open.
I’m 56 years old. Graduated from Clemson in 1988. I’ve been in a wheelchair since high school. Don’t tell me I can’t tell the difference between someone that’s actually handicapped. And my sister is retired Air Force and her husband was honorably discharged from the Marines because of a traumatic brain injury thanks to his truck hitting an IED in Iraq.
I have seen stuff that would blow your mind that people do.

I agree. I have had 2 knee replacements in the last 5 months and often need a handicap spot. Some days are better than others. It is irritating to see some people take advantage of a handicap placard, but even more irritating to see someone park there without a placard. At least with a placard, I can assume they have some type of disability, but may not need a special parking place that day.

Funny, but a golf course I used to visit in Alabama hosted a National golf tournament for the physically handicapped. Handicapped golfers from all over the country came to play in it. You can guess the only spaces in the parking lot that DID NOT have a car parked in them ........ yep ...... the handicap spaces.

A large segment of our society feel entitled. They get a handicap tag or sticker and park in the handicap space and have no problem at all doing it. They only think about themselves. It's just part of the moral breakdown that is happening all over the country.

What's worse is, the police department could get rich from those handicap violators and does nothing, and they will stop someone for less than 10 MPH over the speed limit and give them a ticket, go figure!!!

I never worry about any of that. I just give praise that I am healthy and can walk anywhere I need to go. Shopping around for a closer spot is not an issue with me. And, I figure those that take advantage of the truly handicapped might one day come to understand it in a very clear way.

Those spaces are technically and legally reserved for people with physical disabilities. A wheelchair, a walker, etc. Invisible disabilities where you can walk around perfectly fine. Most of the time is not what those spaces are for.
Are use a wheelchair. I need that space not because it’s closer to the door but because parking space is a very narrow and I need that extra space to open my car door to get my wheelchair in and out the car. That’s why those spaces are there. And for people that use vans. Not people that can get in and out of their car normally. Yes, there are some people that still have limited mobility, but it’s obvious when you see that type of person. That’s not the type of person we’re talking about!
And I hate to break it to you, but almost everywhere I go it can be difficult to find somewhere to park. It’s especially bad when you go to a grocery store or somewhere like Walmart.

There are many issues here but a couple are there is no law enforcement on our roads and belong to a family and a wife may handicapped but sends her husband for bread and milk. Fair, not really.

At one time when my back was at its worst, I used a handicap spot but I really needed it then but I didn’t always look like I had a disability going in but always looked that way coming out. As my back got better I stopped parking in the handicap spot.
It’s been 7-8 years since I have needed it, the God Lord healed my back and it’s a million times better now but I’m still very careful about the wear on my back, bending & picking things up continually. I wish I could still play basketball, tennis or golf now.
I just know the seeds they sow are the the seeds that grow. I try not to judge the book by the cover because we don’t know the journey they are on.
I love them where they are and let the good Lord take care of them. I tell my daughter give them the rope and pray they choose wisely.
I know it’s hard sometimes but If we give it to the Lord he will take care of it.

There is a 90 year old man who I see walking on Pelham Road almost every day no matter the weather and waves at everybody driving by. They did an article about him and found out that after his wife died from Covid 2 years ago he started walking and has logged 6000 miles since her death!

Believe me, what goes around comes around, and one day their right to park in a handicap spot will be taken away by a person the very same as they were when they could get around well enough....

I am operating on one lung. I can walk just fine but give out of breath very quickly. Need that handicap card. Nothing upsets me more than seeing others (no card) park in a handicap spot. Felt that way and called people down if I saw them doing that long before I needed one myself

people in the building(of which I am aware). But all the handicapped spots are full from people who are just lazy. They get a spare placard from their grandparents and use them. These are healthy young women that all have HC hangers.
And to make this political, they are mostly the types that love more government and more regulations. Just don't apply the rules to them.

feel the same way.got a 100$ ticket in maine once for parking in a handicap spot.the sign was so small that i missed it.been very careful since.irony is that i could qualify for a sticker.but as long as i'm ambulatory,i'll continue to walk.afraid of bad karma from taking a spot that someone REALLY needs.

I try to be understanding because you can't really tell if someone is handicapped, especially for a temporary medical issue, just by looking at them.
Some places they now require a hang tag with the handicapped person's picture on it on the rearview mirror.
It's pretty obvious when it's mee-maw's tag and it's the child or grandkid by themself parking in the handicapped spot.

I have lung, heart and leg issues. Some days I feel good and other days I can hardly get about. I use a cane, but doctors want me to use a walker, but it is too much of a hassle for me. I came out of the pharmacy one day and someone had parked in the striped off portion and had parked so close I couldn’t get into my car and had to wait unit the individual came out and his comment was it didn’t have a sign stating handicap so he would park in daym place he wanted. Good thing was a police officer pulled in behind him and he argued with the officer about the space. Just so happens this space had signs stating $350.00 fine. He got ticketed and also received ticket for blocking a handicapped spot.

Then they should park in the closest non-handicap parking space. Have you ever noticed those spaces are a lot wider? That’s for a reason. They are in fact, technically for people with physical disabilities. Ever notice how many of them say van parking? A van needs more room for the wheelchair lift. Someone in a wheelchair someone with a walker etc. they need that wider space to get in and out the car. so actually yes, those spaces are reserved for people with obvious physical disabilities. Someone that doesn’t need a wheelchair or a walker could park a few spaces away and would not be burdened by an extra 10 or 20 feet. They’re simply lazy! They’re entitled!

What's even worse in my opinion is all these d people buying "emotional support" collars off the internet and taking their dog everywhere. So tired of people thinking it's OK to take their dog in the grocery store. If the dog is trained to assist the person I get it but not your average pet.

Maybe three out of ten cars with the placard actually need to be close to the door. I knew a guy who had one because he had partial hearing loss.

I don’t know every situation but my pops had some major issues with breathing after COVID and was issued a temp tag. He could get winded with short walks. But otherwise couldn’t tell he needed a handicap.

Worse to me is those that pull up to front door and park in the fire zone right beside a no parking sign and get out and go in. To me that’s just arrogance. Don’t like abuse of Hcap spots but some of the placards are short term and the person may not show any outward symptoms

Yeah, I’ve called a couple people out on it before. One at Lowe’s (where they have 45 spaces), and the other at a Post Office. Both got pissy with me for being called out. Couldn’t let it slide, though

When I was in my 20's I used to park in handicap spots if I was in a rush and saw multiple handicap spots being unused. I was young, dumb, and inconsiderate. What else can I say?
Luckily, I've grown up. Thank goodness.

But, my Mom has had both of her knees replaced. And, even though she does well mobility-wise getting to and from the car to the stores, her doctor has continued to renew her handicap placard. She is in her early 80s.
In my anger a lot of times I have to remind myself that I don't know their story and reason for having a handicap placard. I know there are abusers, but I can't make that determination.
Now ... if you want to talk stupid drivers in the Greenville-Spartanburg area, I am all ears and will gripe about that like no one else can. And, they are from all over the world, including SC.

So, where I worked, we had a woman who used a cane to walk …

… she was obviously disabled.
But the curious part was that there were handicapped spots on both sides of the parking lot serving separate buildings.
She would ALWAYS choose the spot that had the shade at the time she arrived regardless if it’s distance from her place of work.
If the shady spot was further away, she was willing to walk (with her cane) the extra distance.
Go figure.
