Transfer Players or Walk-on's

I'm not sure if we have any players that transferred to Clemson but I'm curious. Dabo has been a strong proponent of walk-on players. Heck, DW to HF in the National Title is the poster child game for finding that diamond in the rough.
I don't understand why Dabo is apparently so resistant to a transfer portal player but loves walk-ons.
All I know is a lot of transfer portal players are making noise around the nation at their new schools.
If we are going to lose players to the portal then that same outlet needs to be cultivated for filling needs.
I don't want Clemson to be a team that lives on the portal but snobbery isn't the answer either.

and the staff is not going to have a different set of standards for high school kids and transfers. If there is a player in the portal that fills a need and meets our staff's standards, we'll go after him. Dabo has been pretty clear about all of this.

Then why haven't we? We've known the QB room was going to be a fiasco for years now. We had 3 or 4 qbs transfer out within a 2 year period when Trevor stepped foot on campus.

transfer in to be a backup...that's the reason we lost QB's to the portal. AND if we are telling QB recruits that they are next in line and that they are the only recruits we are looking at...doesn't seem right to bring in a transfer. I doubt we'll ever see Dabo reach into the portal for a QB. Other positions possibly but it won't be often.

There have been quite a bit who have transferred to battle for the job and not win it.

Usually those quarterbacks were going into situations without an obvious starter already on the roster. Say what you want about how DJ has played this season, but based on how he was regarded coming out of high school and how he played during his 2 starts last season I don't think any QB looking to transfer to a new school this past offseason would've felt they had a chance of winning the starter job at Clemson.

William Christopher "Dabo" Swinney is the HEAD COACH of Clemson university.
He never has been the guy to grab any grandma who is 8 foot 4, 652-pound, hairy ### gorilla, drives a mac truck and runs a 40 in 10.2. HE is selective about who he offers and who he brings on campus.
only 2 choices.. get rid of him or stop following Clemson football.
there is a 3rd option.. ride the wave. Only 4 more games.

The problem with his comments on the subject are the same problems with his comments earlier in the season regarding DJ and the Offense. The comments just don't align with reality.

If you read articles prior to this season, it's clear he has no love for the transfer portal. You can be that way when your program is kicking Assss. He's reluctantly saying these days he would use it if needs....except he hasn't.

How bad does it have to get for him to pull that trigger rather than backfilling transfers with WALK-ONs and/or trying to "make it up" in the next recruiting class (which means we'll "ALWAYS" be young).

for the right player. That's one way to get people off your back I guess, but continuing to replace loses with walk-ons will continue to put us at a competitive disadvantage. If it's good enough for Bama, it should be for us too. We should be as attractive in the portal as we are with HS recruits. And we ought to have had a previous relationship with a lot that are in the portal.

facing, and that disadvantage is by design. Not every player, no matter how good, fits Dabo’s definition of a Clemson Man. Doesn’t matter if we’re talking high school player or college transfer. Your argument isn’t that we should use the portal, Dabo is willing to do that, your argument is that Dabo needs to change his definition of “Clemson Man”.

we've been losing, on average 6-7/year to the portal the last 3-4 years........we expect him to have utilized it last year, or the year before, or the year before.................and this coming off season.

We've needed QB since we lost Johnson, Tucker, Cooper, Bryant and Brice in a 3 year period. DJ is the first Clemson QB I can recall since Will Proctor who was dubbed the starter without ever going through a quarterback competition. The coach's lack of pursuit in the portal at QB has caused an obvious lack of competition and iron sharpening.

There's an old saying, actions speak louder than words. Nothing wrong with having walk ons. Nothing wrong with using the portal. Does it destroy his commitment to a walk on if you bring in a portal guy and let the best man win. How is that any different than recruiting every year? Put the best on the field. Using the portal is nothing more than an extension of recruiting. That's exactly how day, Saban, Riley and Kirby are using it.
Over the last 3 years perhaps recruiting from the portal made more sense. Doesn't mean you can't have walk ons. If said walk on is better than said portal recruit, they'll be a scholly for Hunter. It's all in the perception of how you view the portal.

But clearly there hasn’t been a player that the staff feels is a good fit. Their not going to use the portal just to use it. You use it to fill a specific need if there is a player that meets your standards. He’s been clear about this.

One can't really say that. There are any number of outstanding young me out there. Just because they didn't get a chance at Clemson the first go around doesn't mean they don't have those characteristics.

Those players aren't on scholarship.
Have you ever bothered to notice that teams are only allowed to have 85 scholarship players and somehow manage to have 115 on the roster?
There are 30 guys on every college sideline that didn't deserve a scholarship, so they didn't get one.

If we're not losing starters to the transfer portal and any brought in are looking to start. That would lead to more unhappy players and transfers. The problem is with misevaluating recruits or not developing them.
