What makes this "alliance" sink or swim is...

Aug 14, 2021, 9:22 PM

what the B1G gets out of it. I don't see what they have to gain. There is nil chance Ohio State and/or Michigan leave for the SEC (or Penn State for the ACC). B1G revenues are already in the same stratosphere as the SEC while the P12 and ACC are severely lagging. What can the P12 and ACC do for the B1G?

Is the B1G bent on revenge against the SEC for upsetting the Power 5 conference balance? Are they concerned the conference structure as we know it could collapse and injure them in the process?

IMO: The B1G is angry at the SEC and they are loyal to the P12. These meetings are for gathering information and won't lead to much of anything. Part of me suspects the B1G would be OK if the entire bowl system collapses and they went back to playing the P12 in their precious Rose Bowl every Jan 1st.

The Big 10 isn't at the financial disadvantage the Pac 12 and ACC are, but they are at a competitive disadvantage. They have just 1 Title the last 15 years, and if you include sports like basketball, baseball etc. It's even worse.

I could easily see pushing for caps on the playoff participants, scholarship limits, auto bids for conference champs etc.

Also more revenue is still more revenue and it could combat the SEC increases.

There's a lot at stake for the Big 10 too.

They damm sure better be pushing for a cap on number of

playoff teams per any one conference. Go ahead and expand it to eight teams, but don't allow more than two per conference! This is what would be best for college football as a whole!

I'm not a fan of having 2 teams from a conference unless

Aug 14, 2021, 10:01 PM

the two teams are from different divisions of the conference AND the teams split the season series. Like if Alabama beat Florida in the regular season and then Florida beat Alabama in the SECCG. I don't like that Alabama can lose one game to a LSU or Auburn and that team wins the division, wins the SECCG then Alabama can get in with a 4-6 seed without playing that extra game.

If 12-0 Alabama plays 12-0 Florida in the SECCG without playing in the regular season, then the loser of that game is OUT of the playoffs. If 12-0 LSU loses to 8-4 Kentucky in the SECCG and they didn't play in the regular season, then LSU is OUT of the playoffs and Kentucky is in. Make the conference championship games matter.

I would like to see this go backwards a bit to smaller

conferences where you play everyone, top 2 play in championship game, and then say 7 conference champs in an 8 team playoff. Eighth team would be top from the small fry.

good idea but I don't see how to go

back to smaller conferences ......

I actually think there's situations where it would make more sense for the 2nd playoff team from a conference to come from the same division as the conference champion. Whenever you have two teams that played in the conference championship game you have two teams that played each other on a neutral field which is no different from what they'd have in the CFP. That isn't the case with two teams from the same division.

Let's say for example you have a season where FSU goes 12-0 during the regular season and goes on to win the ACC Championship game. Let's say during that season Clemson goes 11-1 with their only loss coming in overtime on the road against FSU. An argument could be made that Clemson may have won that game on a neutral field and they're more deserving of consideration for the CFP than a team from the Coastal division who lost to FSU on a neutral field already.

I think you are on the right path. Let's say it is a 12 team playoff and things are capped at 3 teams per conference or even 2 teams. The SEC is kinda screwed in that one spot will go to Bama most years and 15 other teams are fighting it out for 1-2 spots.

You make some great points. Also beyond the money they think of the effect new SEC could have on recruiting with more marquee games. Ohio State for example has done well in the South recruiting and they want to keep it that way. Some ACC matchups in Florida, SC, NC could help them keep the train rolling

What does the BIG10 get out of this alliance?

They get allies to help block the SEC's Power grab. They might get a TV package including all the alliance partners. They might get to keep the four team playoff. They might get a 12 team playoff with no more than 2 or 3 teams from any one conference. They might get a common set of rules for scheduling to assure the three leagues play 8 conference games. They might get an agreement that every team in the 3 leagues plays at least 2 games a year versus other Power 5 league teams. They might get an understanding regarding where ND sits.

Clemson also gains the same advantages the Big 10 gains.

Option 1) As @TigerCook® said 'not giving a rats a$$ about CFB anymore'

Option 2) IMO, I think an alliance makes cents (pun intended) if you look at opportunity lost.
