This weekend is the SCHSL football officials exam

Jul 26, 2022, 6:12 PM

First time taking the test. First year official. I thought I knew football. But yikes.

What’s funny is you only need to score 80% to get certified.

So, in theory, the refs at a high school game could possibly not know 20% of the rules.

That sounds reasonable when knowing that only about 20% of college refs knows the rules!!! That is why we have so many replays now, the head ref wants to make sure that a rule was actually broken;)

Enjoy this season coming up man, I have been doing it since 2009 and each year is another step of knowledge. I played and coached and after my first class I knew nothing about what they were teaching LOL It didn't sound like football to me. I was wanting to see where the center was in the formation nope it's a snapper. As time goes on you will grow and learn that it is worthwhile regardless of those surrounding the field. Most fans, parents and coaches have no idea what it takes to do it and what you need to know. Oh yeah last tidbit, you will never watch football the same after this season LOL. I'll see Ya Saturday and enjoy the test; we took the old one like everyone else when I came in and I barely passed it. I'm glad they changed it for you guys.
Helpful hint for you is to know fundamentals and definitions and you will do well. Those are the cornerstones for rules knowledge

Had to Google Spring Valley. Glad it’s near the interstate. Ha. And a chick-fil-a

Just relax and make sure you read all of the question. Don't assume you know what the question will ask. Trust me, this my 24th year taking the test and not reading the question carefully trips me up at least a few times every year.
Remember after Saturday the real fun starts!! Getting on the field for scrimmages!! BTW, what district are you a part of?

District 1

Jul 26, 2022, 10:32 PM

Yeah, my mentor said fundamentals and ball spotting! Most important first couple of years. They assigned me umpire. I took the new officials test. That was brutal.
