Proactive vs Reactive

Sep 20, 2021, 1:27 PM

Lately it seems this staff has taken an extremely reactive approach to how this season is playing out. I have seen nothing that indicates proactive coaching or game planning. As a result it seems like the fans and media are actually dictating the coaches decisions.

Example 1. Game 1 didn’t run the ball. Afterwards fans furious about not running the ball. Coaches say yep next time we’ll run it more.

Example 2. Game 3 shotgun snap on goal line instead of under center qb sneak. Afterwards fans mind boggled why no under center. Coaches indicate they will now incorporate practicing under center qb sneak.

Why does this staff seem like it’s learning on the fly? They’ve been winning at a high level and coaching at a high level for half a decade. And now they seem to forget how to coach? What to do. How to prepare.

This staff has operated this way for years...

Sep 20, 2021, 1:35 PM

We always start slow, with a bland playbook and tons of player rotations. This year we lost because of it. Almost every year we lose one, or have a close game, because of it. But we also almost always make the playoffs, something Alabama didn't even do in 2019. And we almost always hit our stride at the right time.

This year is a little more difficult because of all the new players we have at key positions, but make no mistake, this is not a new ######.

It's surprising how short the media's/fan's memories are.

And regarding the shotgun...

It's not like we were tackled in the endzone. The RB fumbled. Would I have preferred under center, I guess, but the formation didn't cause the safety, ball control did. It happens.

I get it. The play worked. You’re right. But percentage wise. What was the more logical call?

Under center looks better in hindsight...

but I get why we did it in shotgun as well. If 99.99999% of all of our plays are out of the shotgun, and 99.99999% of all of our hand offs are out of the shotgun, and the part of a play most likely to result in a fumble is the exchange, I'd have a hard time asking them to do something a different way at such a critical time as well. And statistically, a QB is more likely to fumble than a RB. Should we practice under center more? I guess, but the situation has only come up a couple times where fans have questioned why it wasn't used, and this time the formation wasn't the issue.

Again the play call worked. The exchange worked. We just fumbled the ball. Nice play by GT.

IDK,

Even listening to TE, it seems like a lot of our younger players are having a bit more of a challenge responding to "new" wrinkles being tossed at them and the coaching staff is needing to make adjustments.

You have to give those coach-able young players time to learn. That learning moment is reactive by nature.

Three questions. When was the last time you remember us taking a snap under center when the game was on the line? Were you ever on a team that lost the year before to a team 73-7 and how did you play the next year?

I may be wrong but I do think we’ve run QB sneak under center a couple times before.

As for point number 2. Noted. I never thought about that motivational aspect from GT.
