Roosevelt would not let Eliot emasculate football...

Dec 2, 2020, 9:02 AM

“I believe in rough games and in rough, manly sports. I do not feel any particular sympathy for the person who gets battered about a good deal so long as it is not fatal.”

Roosevelt wrote in a letter to a friend that he would not let Eliot “emasculate football,” and that he hoped to “minimize the danger” without football having to be played “on too ladylike a basis.”

Reading this article in today’s climate made me feel sad for the Florida States and Michigan’s of the world and hope the rest of us don’t allow a few to emasculate football. I mean it’s one thing to have a team quit because people are literally dying on the field, but what FSU is being allowed to get away with will change college FB as we know it.

I grew up in the 70’s and recall watching what would happen to QB’s then so it’s hard to think of somebody like Tom Brady as the Goat knowing he wouldn’t have survived that kind of beating (but that’s another conversation).

"The one who thinks we can and the one who thinks we can't are both right! Which one are you, son? Which one are you, son?"

Good Read. OK with most of rule changes designed for safety.

Some interpretations by officials are over the top.

Also remember reading the CTE stories about former players.

Been happening for many decades now

Picture is worth 1,00 words, even if it's Michigan.

Kinda reminds me of this:

This seems a bit over the top

I don't think covid cancellations are going to set some precedent going forward once things return to normal.

Does it? which part? Why should "not having

enough scholarship players" even be an issue. I will concede not having enough linemen but any other position is unacceptable if you know the criteria/protocol and it wasnt a problem when you played BC under the EXACT SAME CIRCUMSTANCES 2 weeks before.

“I don’t know whether you fully understand that I have just been shot. It takes more than that to kill a bull moose. Fortunately I had my manuscript, so you see I was going to make a long speech, and there is a bullet—there is where the bullet went through—and it probably saved me from it going into my heart. The bullet is in me now, so that I cannot make a very long speech, but I will try my best.”

Teddy Roosevelt, October 14, 1912

They don't make them like that anymore.

I like Aussie rule football.

Closer to what American football was like in Roosevelt's time. Kind of a combination of soccer and football. But much more violent and dangerous than either of those sports today. No real protection, helmets, pads, facemasks, shoulder pads, etc.
