ugh - title 9

Nov 5, 2020, 4:59 PM

As usual with govt actions, the cause is worthy and the unintended consequences are many. I don't believe that $2 mil in cost savings drove this entirely. Had that been the case, the women's teams would have been done, as well. There is a simple way to solve the title 9 issue and save men's small, non revenue sports. Simply exclude revenue generating sports from the "equal scholly" count. Or even just exclude football. The consequences of this have been insane - particularly at the D2 level, where you don't have the big football $$ to fund other programs. Men's non-revenue sports have been, and continue to be, decimated by this. But it's the 5th rail, and nobody will touch it or admit that it is driving these actions. Sad...

Huh ? Buck Belue on the 680 is not exactly available in AZ ! But it sounds like he is a pretty smart guy ! Other than where he chose to go to school, that is....

This isn’t a Title IX problem

Nov 5, 2020, 6:04 PM

At the end of the day, Clemson has decided to divert the CUAD resources to football at the expense of everything else. I don’t really have a problem with the decision but it is a fact. If you devote an extra million (or 10) to football you have to either generate that from somewhere or cut something. The budget issues with COVID just exacerbated things.

Clemson could fund cross country/track&field but that money would (effectively) come from Football.

Maybe you missed the part about keeping the women's teams...If not for Title 9, they would be gone, too. The point is - Title 9 hurts disproportionately hurts men's small sports. Yes - $$ are the issue. But title 9 has the effect of forcing certain solutions.

Clemson didn’t have to cut men’s CC/T&F to comply with Title IX but instead CHOOSE to cut it to save the money.

Clemson has 141.2 men’s scholarships and only 101 for women (despite having essentially an equal male/female student population). The women’s track/cc team has 18 scholarships so they can’t cut both unless you also want to cut men’s golf or tennis.

In the end, Clemson choose to give the $2.5M to football instead of men’s track. I’m not complaining but it is true.
