This is EXACTLY why college football is dying (link)

Instead of trying to get more parity in college football this is a big swing in the other direction. Not sure how they will ever fix this because it’s supposedly legal. Do not see the upside for the average fan but great for the schools and athletes at the certain schools that can keep up.

I don't like what's happening either, but it's likely that the schools that figure out quickly how to work within this new reality are going to benefit with improvements to win-loss records. I hope the NCAA is looking at ways to get the situation under control although their track record is lacking...

Being paid and paying top dollar to get a recruit is not the same imo. If they deserve to be paid let’s quit giving to Iptay and the kids can flip their own dime for all the money given for tuition and whatever other benefits given to be a student athlete. Little more complex than just pay them. NFL pays but there are caps. This method is asinine at best for good college football going forward unless you are a A&M, Alabama, Texas or Bama fan. Might as well and throw OSU in there as well. Paying is not the real issue here in my opinion. It’s basically the pay to play for the top bidder which is totally different for every university.

So who is responsible for collecting or paying the taxes?

Mar 3, 2022, 10:55 AM [ in reply to Re: I'm assuming the NIL deals will be taxed as income?*** ]

Does the entity who structures the NIL deal withhold the taxes and then pays the Fed and the state, or are the players treated like independent contractors rather than employees where they get a 1090 at the end of the year, and are responsible for filing and paying the taxes. If the latter is the case, I can envision a scenario where many simply don't do it.

You do understand that drives the cost up on something that is already marked up probably 300%. So you make 15 an hour but in return shoe cost go up 30 bucks. Re: This is EXACTLY why college football is dying (link)

You don’t need a federal MW. The market will dictate what people are willing to work for. And honestly it should be left to the state etc. $15 in NY is not the same as $15 in SC. You cannot get anyone for less than $15 in the Twin Cities it was heading this direction before COVID.

And it is all relative. The wage hike definitely has been part of the issue with the current inflation. That $1 value menu is now gone.

Re: This is EXACTLY why college football is dying (link)

Mar 3, 2022, 3:15 PM [ in reply to Re: This is EXACTLY why college football is dying (link) ]

I don’t mean to hijack this thread but…

I will agree to a nationwide federal minimum wage when the federal government (Medicare) pays me the same amount, for the same service that someone does in New York.

As an example: an initial PT eval in NY is reimbursed $118 by Medicare. The same PT eval in SC is reimbursed $95. Every single procedure code we use is paid at a 20-35% lower rate to me because of geography. Yet, a minimum wage is supposed to be fair across the whole country, regardless of cost of living/geography?

When it cost the government money, they are happy to accept that cost of living is cheaper in SC than NY. When it costs healthcare practitioners they don’t care.

Rant over.

IMO:

It’s the “we have to change with it” that’s the problem. There will be a lot of fans, particularly the older fans, that will not change, will lose interest and find other things to do.

Combine the alienation of the older donors with the relative apathy toward sports (most notably football) of the younger generations and we could see huge changes in donations, attendance, sales, etc. Will TV money be enough to support college athletics? Will athletes still bother with college if scholarship money dries up?

Reminds me of the fall of several local churches that did everything to cater to teens and concurrently ran the old folks out…they left, took their money with them and the churches failed.

Personally, I give to IPTAY to support scholarships for our athletes. I gave to IPTAY for around 10 years after graduation without even wanting/ordering any tickets. When the scholarships don’t matter, I’ll stop giving…

quickly becoming pro football's farm league. It is pro football. Many players have no interest in or intent on attending college classes or getting an education. Many are not capable. They are there to play ball, Period. All sorts of shenanigins and work-arounds are in play to get them in and keep them in. It's been that way forever. Rules, regulations, and requirements have been tweaked and changed and ignored in order to make it all okay. It's all a big lie and we all know it, and have known it forever. Now the final step - open pay to play. Now we're all upset.

Either college football is college students, meaning students who apply to a college/university, have the academic wherewithall, meet all of the requirements, and are accepeted and carry a full class load working toward a legitimate degree and play on the football team, or

You have something else which really isn't college football. Something like what we have now, something like NIL and pay to play.

and what we must do is, to the extent we can, starve the beast of college football, and all of it's subsidiary beasts (the schools themselves). But that will be hard emotionally and psychologically for those of us who have grown up culturally and socially attached to the pomp and pageantry and culture of the game as a part of our lives.

I think it's to the point at which we should not give to the athletic department or programs of schools who are doing this type of thing - which soon will be pretty much everyone, in one way or another, nor support them directly in any way.

The next step would be stopping all consuming altogether of the sport, which will be the hardest, but, let's be honest - the most effective were it actually done. If ESPN/ABC/Fox et al, and various other media outlets online started seeing huge viewership and traffic downturns, that would have an effect. I'm not saying it'll really happen, but those of us who truly loathe these developments are going to have to make that leap at some stage.

I'm with you. I may have gone to my last game and if I hadn't already given a sizable sum to IPTAY, I would strongly consider not donating a cent.

College Football is thriving.

The SEC and Big Ten are thriving no doubt. I guess if we get 25 mill a year and the SEC gets 50 mill per team how is that sustainable for parity. College football will not be thriving for the average fan of most schools that can’t keep up with the schools that can buy top notch talent. Get back with me in about 5 years and let’s revisit who is actually thriving. If it’s thriving then why screw it up.

When the "student" athletes are getting a free education, best coaching, best food, best housing, on TV every week, get to play the game they love, and on top of that make as much or more money than the people watching them in the stands, I have no reason to pay $100.00 plus for tickets. This country has gone nuts with it's liberal thinking.
Just my opinion.

Frankly this doesn't seem as bad for competition as the money differences of being in one conference or another. At least as a Fan I can choose to give to my teams collective. I can compete. I could build the best facilities for football in the country and Vandy would still get more TV revenue though.

Rather than whine, our boosters need to be following suit. Like it or not, it's the new normal. Adapt or lose.

Too onerous for these entertainer types to have to attend class with those who pay their way.

This cancerous genie is out of the bottle. It doesn't looks like anyone is trying to put in back in. The game will become increasingly unrecognizable and unwatchable with ESecPN and Disney leading the charge further down the money-driven gutter. Given this, I predict we get 4 to 5 more years of Dabo before he quits.
