This is a hard one for me...

Dec 16, 2021, 8:43 PM

I have loved College Football and Clemson for as long as I can remember, since I was a little kid. I love the pomp and circumstance, pageantry, excitement, atmosphere, etc. when it comes to College Football. I can remember being so exited for Saturday to come around and I would plan my entire Saturday around watching and listening to College Football. To me, there was nothing like gameday Saturdays and watching teams win and teams get upset and fall from the ranks all around the Nation. I loved everything about College Football. The bands playing, the cheerleaders cheering, the gameday fight songs and chants. I loved the rivalries and traditions. I loved all of College Football and everything it had to offer. I loved that it was College Students playing and that paying players was strictly forbidden. I loved the Bowl Season, New Years Day, the gameday parades, the games, the beautiful Bowl stadiums painted up and decorated. I loved the off-season, the recruiting, February signing day, spring practice and spring games. I loved the summer pre-season talk, summer camps, summer practice, talk shows and predictions. I loved College Football and it was one of the things that made my life complete and brought me true happiness.

Its no longer the same for me. I love Clemson, I love the Tiger faithful but College Football is no longer what I remembered. All of the things I loved are now dead or are dying quickly. I just don't get excited about College Football anymore. Maybe I am just getting older and changing my life, maybe its because its turned into a money making business machine, maybe its the greed, maybe its all of the above or none of the above.

I love T-NET and many of you on here. You all are awesome. Some are very funny, some are just great people but all have given me years of enjoyment reading your posts. I am going to step away for a while, maybe forever, I need a break. I just cant find it in me to continue to support College Athletics the way I should. Clemson deserves its fans to be ALL IN all the time and that is something I have struggled with all year. I will be around from time to time to read posts and get laughs but I wont be around as much. I need to find happiness in life, happiness in something. College Athletics and even Clemson Football is no longer making me happy. It is nothing Clemson has done or the coaches and players. It is simply that I don't find the happiness with College Football or College Athletics like I did years ago. Sometimes, I get more depressed when I read about the NIL or Transfer Portal. These things have changed the game so much that is just not something I can get behind. This is a sad time for me, I miss the past and I miss the golden days of College Football.

Love you all, thanks for the great memories on T-Net. I will keep my account active and, from time to time, like posts. Depression and Sadness are real. People struggle everyday with depression. Sometimes, as a man or a women, you have to stop being embarrassed and make a change before things get pout of hand. I need to make those changes sooner rather than later. Sports and College football is just a small percentage of my sadness. I miss my family. I miss having them around. Holidays are not the same. Life is just not the same on all fronts.

Keep cheering those Tiger's on and pray for me if that is something you believe in.

God speed ladies and gentleman. Whether you are a Tiger or a Gamecock, keep your heads up!

I understand your feelings. I felt the same way about MLB and the NFL. Now, I seldom watch either. (I'll watch an NFL game, half heartedly, if there is no PGA or NASCAR race on (or if Major League Fishing isn't streaming a live tournament).

But, I want to comment on your comment about depression. Depression is real. It is as real as needing to wear glasses or a hearing aid. Do not take it lightly. Don't think it is "just all in your mind." If it persists, seek professional guidance. Don't assume it will just go away.

Dear TattedCop® there is an excellent post just a short while earlier this evening (Thurs. Dec. 16th) from @tTigerCC® which explains the Trevor Etienne NIL.

Not to say that this will bring back your past enthusiasm, but TigerCC's post explains the NIL in a way that helps to temper the sense that football prospects have nothing other than pure greed in play.

Sure, the NIL stinks, but at least in T.Etienne's situation it isn't quite so awful as having the boosters of your 'college finalists' purchasing T.Etienne's commitment via buying the most NFT's.

If you can stand to read one more post, then please read TigerCC's post. It's also educational even if it is not enough to breathe another whiff of hope into your view of the future of college football.

Hey “TC”..worried about your being depressed & missing love ones

Dec 16, 2021, 9:53 PM

but trusting your scaling back, on TNet and other social groups, might help since you won’t be reading all the crappo here & elsewhere about immature 17-22 year old football players jerking our chains over what they perceive they are due financially b/4 they have even done a dang thing in life other than worship a pumpkin-shaped ball 24/7.

Saying, I got off TNet for one year voluntarily (from posting only) due to needing to use more of that on-site time to do other things important in life.

Your reducing your time here and not reading about the dramatic social & political changes that encompass college football may be a very smart move for now since it’s upsetting me too.

Lastly Retired Police Officer & Tiger Fan..please don’t allow depression to overcome you b/4 getting help. And yes, please remember this time of year is a bummer for everyone being without certain love ones or friends but that’s normal for all of us of any advanced age.

PS: Know we on TNet are here, care for & love you TC! ?? And, you do know HumbleServant & I are your two Followers and we will be following you every step! ??

Feel the same way about all sports now except golf and when that goes woke, it will join the heap of irrelevance as well.

The way I deal with it is I don't consider it anymore than entertainment. I can take it or leave it. There are far too many other things in life that have more value than sports watching.

If you Don't have other hobbies or people in your life, use this time away from college FB to find new outlets and new social groups who have the same interests and views on life as you.

I will pray for you. As many have said, seek help for your depression. It can be cured.

Depression is serious and you need not

Dec 16, 2021, 10:29 PM

go it alone- take it from someone who has worked in the psychology field for almost 50 years. And one who lived in the Walter Reed amputee and open wound ward as a patient for months. You have taken the 1st step by recognizing your feelings and opening up here. As a cop, you had to experience things that are hard to forget and that might contribute to your sadness. Don’t give up on Clemson football due to current changes- have hope that more changes are ahead that will restore some order. I don’t like the new conditions either but will continue as a big Clemson fan forever and enjoy game days win or lose. Please seek support even if you feel alone in this struggle.

I'm with you. I too will be leaving college football. Maybe I'll just watch the Furman or some small school. Maybe Harvard or army.

Just not interested. It cost too much. Tickets parking, merchandise etc.

College football is not a good product anymore.

Plus sitting around on Saturday is not healthy.

I use to be a big baseball fan, boxing and NFL guy. I don't miss any of them.

To the original poster, I say get outside. Many great hobby s out there.

Not a doctor, but I have seen and been around enough to have come to a couple conclusions. I have been around someone for several years, who has a high level of anxiety. Been through a lot in trying to help find them treatment. The mind is powerful. It is capable of incredible things. Part of it is attitude, part is habits developed, part can be chemical in your brain. As silly as it sounds, getting up and saying to yourself " today is going to be a good day" , can have a tremendous effect. Eliminating bad habits or negative situations is crucial.
Whatever else you do, lift your problems to God. He can, and will, fix your head and your heart. He wants to do that for you. It's an amazing ride...
Football will work itself out. It always does. The pendulum swings both ways.

Brother Tat, we're all here for you. I'll pray for you, or with you. You can reach out and tmail most of us. Especially us older folk that are in the same boat and frame of mind you're in. Because sometimes just chatting with someone or writing an email etc can do wonders. Even if it's to chat about the weather or reminiscing. Even a good cry. Don't have to be sports. Please promise you will.

Football has its ebbs and flows. I have faith that Dabo and other great college coaches will get it corrected for the better. Try to enjoy our bowl game. It's a lot to be excited about. A lot of good Clemson sports between now and next football season. Just think how exciting next season will be.

Politics and professionalism has invaded an amateur sport that we all loved. Everyone's ashamed of the youth but the truth looks strange. This has been coming since betting $ on amateurs started.

It slowly cheapened the character of players coach spectator and parents. But here are two points to consider before walking away completely from such a powerful hobby in your life.

This is a hobby. Some of us consider it family and it is still. But it's NOT something to get depressed over. Remember what goes up must come down. We been riding high for a long time. It's inevitable. Im sick of all the changes too. But I can't leave them out of my mind. I dream about old players all the time. Clemson fans invest alot of their heart mind and finances into clemson football. Moreso than 95%of all the other programs.

There is something special about them hills. The world, the media and we got to witness this and it was more than I could've ever dreamed. But if ya didn't notice the world and media hated it. VERY STRANGE.

Dabo did things the right way, was successful, and people hated him and us for it. The media has tooken it's toll on ya. Not the players coach or fans. Recruiting has been another uprising hobby that has turned into garbage and #### near just weird.

I have an old Clemson program from the late 70's explaining that everyncaa football team in the nation had to decide which 4 games they would get televised.

To prevent a monopoly ESPN and give the media control over an amateur sport. So it's been coming. May never be the same may be. But one things for sure I enjoy seeing football, playing it, but never ever ever ever let my pride bet on any college or pro athletics. Saved alot of money and anger that way. Betting is strangely more powerful of a vice over gradual time than even drugs.

That's why I hated Walt deptula or any show talking about Vegas and college sports in the same breath. Over unders and all that NONSENSE. I would get fired from my show for refusal to take about amateur sports lines??

Coming from a 34 yr old man that loves football it's still Just a game. Hopefully recog table in the next two decades lol

But good luck to you man. Don't let it take it completely from you. Breaks are always good. A river runs through it. It's a trout fishing family movie that if you dont hate gambling by the end of that film then ok but it shows how quietly destructive even betting as a child can lead. Thanks for listening. And GO TIGERS!

Depression is no joke man. They make a lot of excellent medications to help with it now, please talk to your doctor if you are feeling depressed. You don't have to suffer.

I totally get it with CFB and pro sports. The woke nonsense and pay-for-play are really a buzzkill. The sheer gall required of businesses to lecture their customers and proselytize on politics is sickening. I never would have imagined we would see such a thing in my lifetime.

Same for me

If I want to watch whiny, entitled athletes get pandered to and paid and jump from team to team and wear social justice logos on their unis, then I'd watch the NFL. That is what CFB has turned into for me. College football is becoming everything I despise about the NFL.

Prayers and concern for you. I believe you are at a good turning point in your life, having come to the wisdom that your simple pleasure and joy of college football is being tainted by what opportunists have done, and you are at a threshold, a breakthrough in life. We all have been wearied by the assaults of the last 2 years. We need to find ways to escape the mind-bending control of the experts who are gaslighting us that they have the solutions for our lives and existence. Fishing, friends, fresh air and natural beauty. Praying for one another as best we can. God interprets the cries of our hearts and spirits. You are at a new and fresh beginning.

Can relate 100%. As a Gamecock fan told me 20 years ago, he refused to let the ups and downs of a group of 20 year old kids effect his mental outlook. Been following the Tigers since the 70's but I don't have near the enthusiasm for it now. Hard to put my finger on it, we have won more games, the players and coaches have a higher level of integrity, but the money grab by all to be funded by the fans is part of it I guess. In the 80's I parked for free behind the P&A building and had a 15 minute walk to my lower deck seats without a seat tax. It wasn't too hard to get on a list and watch a few practices - that was more fun than some of the games. The stadium was full then - 80,000 plus, but parking has now been pushed further and further from the stadium while the prices have gone through the roof for the same # of fans. Best to have multiple hobbies and doing almost anything outdoors can be a much more enjoyable pursuit for me at times. Good luck with any issues you may be struggling with.

I understand how you feel. It’s not the same for me either.

I think it’s normal for your priorities to change as you get older. Hobbies and undertakings that I was once passionate about, now don’t have the same luster. Trinkets that I once thought were irreplaceable, I now have no problems selling.

Clemson football will always have a special place in my heart and I will always make plans around watching the Tigers play. But the ease of using the portal and NIL have changed the playing field. My enjoyment and passion around watching and caring about that portion of the process is next to nil. I’m okay with that.

For each of us it’s always truly about what’s next.

God bless and keep you, lift his countenance around you, and give you peace.
