This Has Nothing to Do re KB

Sep 28, 2018, 9:37 PM

Took some boiled peanuts out of the freezer early this evening to thaw and reheat so I could have a little snack during the game tomorrow. As I gazed at those large goobers my thoughts turned to yesteryear, which, for me would be in the late 1920's and the 1930's. A lot of peanuts were grown in my home area and there was a huge peanut drying facility in one of the towns. The Spanish variety, a small but tasty nut, was the primary variety produced.

The peanut picker, a device that removed the peanuts from the vine, was not as efficient as today's models and a lot of peanuts were left on the vines. The vines were baled as hay and stored in the top of the barns. Practically all barns had a metal roof and there was no insulation. On a rainy day we would head for the barn, pick the raw peanuts off the hay and munch on those peanuts to our heart's content. The sound of rain on that tin roof was like a symphony, it could put one to sleep in nothing flat. If any of you have ever done that you know that was a little bit of heaven.

Nickels and dimes were hard to come by during the depression but when we had a shiny dime it was down to the store to retrieve an ice cold six ounce Coca Cola from the drink box and a sleeve of Tom's Toasted Peanuts. Open that sleeve of peanuts and pour the contents into that bottle of Coke. Each item cost one nickel and there was no sales tax. Luckily for us, we didn't have to wait for a rainy day to enjoy this treat.

I remember my dad (B-24 crewman in WWII) buying cigarettes from machines and there was a nickle of dime change in the wrapper. I am assuming the cost $.25 since we were in Va in the 50's and 60's

Cool memories to read. Thanks for sharing. As a 26 year old, I wonder what memories I'll reflect fondly on in the 2070s.

thanks for the smile Joe.

The world has changed a lot, but the simple pleasures of rain on a tin roof or summer days of childhood never change.

P.S. I am partial to a pack of peanut butter nabs and ice cold lemonade!
