It is curious, with all the public schools and football

programs in the country with a big FCA presence and a team chaplain (Auburn specifically comes to mind), that Clemson has been singled out.
There's obviously a happy medium between team-sponsored required religious services and a group of like-minded coaches and players choosing to worship how they see fit. And despite the clever name of this organization, the Establishment Clause is as much about freedom OF religion. Clemson cannot force players to attend church but they cannot keep them from doing so either.
I'm confident the administration made sure we were striking that medium after the whole thing with Nuk Hopkins baptism a few years ago.
The ultimate kicker is, this letter is all smoke and mirrors--the FFRF cannot sue Clemson as their Constitutional rights have not been violated (if anyone's have at all).

I don't think this organization - however legitimate or not - is trying to prevent players from attending church.
The question is and always will be regarding where the line is drown in sand between a state employee encouraging/sanctioning/facilitating/endorsing these activities and whether, though participation is optional, if players are in a position to really say no and be given equivocal fair treatment.
The burden of proof - as my guess - would be for the organization to prove that Swinney was endorsing a particular religion (which seems to be the case) and whether or not there's the potential for a violation of someone's civil rights who doesn't toe the party line.
I just don't know on this one.

I know you're joking, but if anything similar is the case, then it will get a lot more serious.

The only thing it would take for this to go from complaint to "uh oh" would be if there were any current or former Clemson player who ever perceived that their rights were violated or that they unnecessarily suffered as a result of their option to abstain from the staff-endorsed religious activities.
Highly unlikely, but something to think about.

I think part of the issue in all of this is that I am POSITIVE someone at some time has perceived they were somehow persecuted for not sharing the same Faith as the coaches.
That perception is natural, and, in my experience in other areas than football, usually a misguided excuse for other issues. But I'd be shocked if it hadn't happened in or football program, and indeed at dang near every football program.

Upstate as they have been targeting many local school districts for a while now.
They threatened Pickens County just over a year ago and ended the 130 old practice of a local minister praying before meetings.
But they did get their cans handed to them when they tried threatened to end the Good News Clubs a few years ago. Their arguments in that case revealed that they are truly only anti-Christian bigots despite their public professions.
Dishonest people doing dishonest things....
