Third Down Conversion Struggles

Oct 3, 2021, 12:22 AM

First off, congratulations to the team for the win! Players showed a lot of heart and proud of the Tiger defense. Wanted to address the board here on the topic of third down conversion rate for the Clemson offense:

Tonight Clemson was 3 of 14 (21%) on third down. Last game vs NC State we were 2 of 11 (18%) on third down. Are we seeing a troubling trend here recently for Clemson struggling to convert third downs? Is this on play calling or player execution struggles (or a combination of both)?

For some wider context, according to NCAA stats Clemson this season is now converting third downs at a rate of 39% (27 conversions of 69 attempts), which ranks us around #70 in the country in that category (of 130 teams). Additionally Clemson has yet to convert on any fourth downs thus far this season. Finally, according to ESPN player splits this season, DJ Uiagalelei is completing just 44% of his pass attempts on third down, which is a notable regression of his completion percentage when compared to him on first down (57%) and on second downs (65% completion percentage)…

Would appreciate hearing any feedback or thoughts on this issue and whether this is a trend that can be corrected quickly.

LAST O calls in last 2 games were pitiful!

No surprise to try to hit Justin on last play, when a shorter pass to get a first down would have made more sense. Then tonight, what third and short with less than 2min left, and "speed option" was attempted with a slow QB?????Stoopid just pitiful.

We need to do better on first and second down. It was the same the last few years. It seemed it was always 3rd and 12 and Trevor would trough and a receiver would make a great catch. I just seems we never really have a 3rd and 2 to often over the past few years.

Would certainly help if Nagata would quit dropping catchable passes that kill momentum. Definitely no T Higgins on the team despite the supposed five star status.
