They need to shorten the game

By eliminating all the unnecessary review calls. And it's very simple. Give each head coach two or three challenges per half. Don't even charge them a time out. If a play happens and the officials want to review it to see if they got it right .. tough. You have to stick with the call on the field... unless a coach challenges it.

Same with targeting. If a player is called for targeting...then that player leaves the game and his team gets a 15 yard penalty. While sitting on the sidelines, a separate official reviews the call and if it wasn't targeting he may reenter the game but the game doesn't stop. We don't need to see targeting reviews. Just keep on playing.... unless a coach challenges it.

I promise this will cut down on review time significantly and cut down on total game times. Because it seems almost every other play nowadays are getting reviewed.

Stop trying to change the actual game.

Also it would help if TV timeouts were 2 minutes rather than 4 minutes. It is torture at the games watching the 4 minute clock tick down.

I agree with limiting reviews, but it would require wholesale changes in officiating the game. Since the review came in, officials were taught to NOT make calls, but to let the plays continue and have the replay booth make corrections where necessary. NFL officiating handles "end of play" situations pretty well, but college officials are HORRIBLE. Now, it would be necessary to retrain these "village idiots" to actually make calls... as they should have been doing all along.

It will be interesting...

College football officials simply have gotten lazy. I'm.nit sure if there is truth to them being taught nit to make calls, but definitely they have used replay as a crutch. That needs to stop. H
Just go back to officiating the game like they did in the 90s and let coaches challenge calls they don't agree with

Having some type of booth refs to review the play and announce the call would be a win/win.

No more stupid shots of refs under the hood and running back and forth.

A tech savvy ref in a controlled environment who can immediately access all film angles should be able to review faster and more accurately.

Probably not immediately feasible for all games, but certainly “prime time” matchups could make it work.

Yes CS73 I have thought that for years

And for smaller games it might not be feasible but definitely for the big games

Changing the game to have a running clock after a first down is horrible. Changes the game too much.

I agree with the OP that the thing that needs fixing, if we can't have less TV commercials, is the reviews. Review calls only if challenged by a coach like the OP said is one way. Probably the best.

Another way is to limit how long the officials have to do the review. Put THEM on a running clock. Give them a couple of minutes and that's it.

I also agree with the OP on targeting however there needs to be the option for "non-flagrant" version to not result in an ejection. Review it and then if not super bad then let the kid back in the game. Should only take a play or two to do the review... if there is an option to NOT eject there won't be a need for all the hand wringing.
